So do people think that the Vita will sell even worse in the US and Europe or what? I can't imagine it could be worse..
Well when you think about how Japan has a higher adoption rate on new tech....yeah, things aren't looking to good.

Rune Factory's traditionally done worse than Harvest Moon.
Handhelds are far less popular in the West than they are in Japan...
So logic dictates that it certainly won't do much better.

If it (Vita) stabilizes around 15k that would be alright.
No, it really wouldn't. If it sits ~15k per week for the bulk of the year, then Vita will finish the year well below 2M LTD after 2 holiday seasons on the market. There's nothing alright about that.
Vita can't spend most of the year sitting in the 15-20k range. Sony needs to find some way to boost sales (prolonged boost - not just a blip for a couple weeks) during the year.
Well, the PSP and PS3 sold 2.56 and 1.25 million in their first years respectively. If the Vita ends up somewhere in the in the 1.5 to 2.0 range, I'd say that's alright ........ okay maybe slightly bad :\

Problem, though, is that Vita is trailing PSP by about 230k units just after 9 weeks.
I wonder, is this the first time a system was facing "X is DOA" even before it was released in all territories?

The PSP was about 2.7M after the 2nd holiday season. If Vita spends most of of the year hovering in the 15-20k range, it will be a good million units behind the PSP after 2 holiday seasons. That would actually put it right about the same number as PS3 (about 1.7M).
And really, if Vita finishes the 2nd set of holidays below 2M LTD, then PS3-type numbers is probably about the best-case scenario for Vita. That can't possibly be what Sony had in mind for Vita coming off the PSP in Japan.
I completely agree with you guys. I was just being optimistic and saying if the Vita stabilizes at 15k over the next few months, without any major software release, it wouldn't be that bad. Just somewhat bad heh. A PS3-level success is okay to me, but probably not to Sony.
Unfortunately I think hardware sales could actually go even lower ... :\

Sony must be working on some game either internally or with a 3rd party that is aimed at boosting the vita's hardware numbers. They know that software moves hardware and right now software is probably the biggest issue for the vita. I hope we get some major announcements soon though I can't quite imagine what that game changing software would be.

If they could make that kind of game we'd have seen it for the PS3 or PSP.
I don't think Sony is capable of producing that kind of software, at least not in the near future.
So it'd have to be with a 3rd party, and Sony doesn't have a stellar reputation when it comes aggressively courting 3rd party exclusives; at least if the PSP is any guide.
Really? I always thought sony was pretty good at courting third parties. Sony got a lot of good 3rd party support from the psp at launch. PS3s support was also pretty good it just took forever to come out due to japanese developers inexperience. Sony has always been pretty good with courting 3rd parties for PS, PS2, PSP, and PS3. The problem is that due to psp and ps3's underwhelming sales they lost a lot of leverage on top of the fact that microsoft and (I can't believe I'm saying this) nintendo are aggresively pursuing 3rd parties.
If they could make that kind of game we'd have seen it for the PS3 or PSP.
So when the PSP sales started to falter they didn't go aggressive on securing big third-party exclusives. There'd be the occasional half-hearted attempt at E3 where they'd try and bring in Western publishers, but it never amounted to all that much. They weren't very proactive about turning around the fortunes of the system, and instead it came down to Capcom striking gold with a PS2-PSP port.
Relative to console performance, yeah. Still, Japan has made up only about a fifth of DS's business.Handhelds are far less popular in the West than they are in Japan...

As much as anything that would be dividends from 10 years of massive home dominance thanks to making the right moves in the mid-90s. I'd say the current position is at least as tough as they had with PS1. At that time, things like cartridges made companies desirable of an alternative to the previous market leader; Sony had to be the best of the rest. Convincing companies to actively choose against an already-strong continuing leader is more of a GameCube position.Lord_Byron28 said:Really? PSP started out fairly decently in the States, though. I'm interested to see whether Vita might have a decent start, too, or the PSP's invisibility over the last few years has ruined that.

Then, Samurai Warrios and Tekken in the ranking of best selling games on first day.
Partial numbers for sure, but wouldn't that be sort of unexpected? Isn't Tekken 3DS expected as a semi-bomba?
get6-2 impressions are in
Theatrhythm FF: 40 - 50k as estimate for the first day; if I understand correctly the shipment for the weekend is almost sold out
Binary Domain...not well as expected?
Then, Samurai Warrios and Tekken in the ranking of best selling games on first day.
Then, there's something about New Love Plus, but I don't understand it.

If anyone has the possibility to translate
So I posted this in the other thread but seems fit her better:
From Toyama seems like it's selling decently on PSN
It's expected to be a bomba, but however...I did this through Google Translation, so this is why I'd like a true translation from someone who knows Japanese indeed.
I can picture duckroll being mad at you....
Dude, he already asked you to cease bringing halfassed, (miss)translated japanese stuff to the MC threads, don't put yourself on the line :/
Gran Turismo is perfectly tailorable to be an awesome online game.
For the Japanese market, what they need is something playable in short spurts that also requires grinding. There's every scope that GT could be that game and would carry the big name.
Yes, i know there was a PSP version but it was an absolute shithouse version of the game.
LOTS of challenges, lots of licenses, a well structure level system with comparisons to your friends online, local and online racing.
40-50K is "low" indeed. S-E must've been crazy, this game could've made 150K first week.
You're right in that that would be a wonderful title for the Vita.
Given the dev cycle of GT Mobile, I'll expect it in 2016.
(Actually, while I joke there: I suspect that a GT Vita *is* in production, but Sony are far too scared to actually promote it until they're damn sure they can release it within a year)
So why does that blog matter?
by the time GTvita is ready vita will have been discontinued and it'll be moved to smartphones
You can edit the translations and just leave the link. I am also interested in knowing more about how FFT and Tekken have fared during their first day of availability. This is just get6-2, one retailer we know can be reliable about trends. And I reported the things more clear about it, and the link, without the Japanese original. Only one, and not as I was doing weeks ago. It's not the same thing, come on now XP

About Gravity Daze: I can see it doing 15-20k this week, as well as 10k or lower. It seems it's a great quality game, so it could have legs, but there's also to consider the low install base could limit it.
I wonder what are the sales on PSN. 1800 people rated the game, so the number of people that bought it is what? x5? x10?
This is a dangerous road to go down.
This is a dangerous road to go down.
I'm just curious what is the buy:rate ration of these things in Japan? I don't know about the West either, but it always seemed to be people that rate what they buy are a slim minority.
If this is potentially inflammatory discussion I will stop.
