Rune Factory's traditionally done worse than Harvest Moon.

While Harvest Moon games tend to have done better, RF3 was one of the highest rated DS games on most japanese review websites. RF4 is also seeing better reception than HM3DS did when it started pre-orders. I love HM, and will be importing the game next week, but I'd be surprised if it does better than RF4.

Handhelds are far less popular in the West than they are in Japan...
So logic dictates that it certainly won't do much better.

Well when you think about how Japan has a higher adoption rate on new tech....yeah, things aren't looking to good.

True. I thought this was pretty much the GAF opinion but I just wanted to make sure. (and I agree with you guys.) Can't wait to see how release goes in the U.S.

If it (Vita) stabilizes around 15k that would be alright.

No, it really wouldn't. If it sits ~15k per week for the bulk of the year, then Vita will finish the year well below 2M LTD after 2 holiday seasons on the market. There's nothing alright about that.

Vita can't spend most of the year sitting in the 15-20k range. Sony needs to find some way to boost sales (prolonged boost - not just a blip for a couple weeks) during the year.

Well, the PSP and PS3 sold 2.56 and 1.25 million in their first years respectively. If the Vita ends up somewhere in the in the 1.5 to 2.0 range, I'd say that's alright ........ okay maybe slightly bad :\

Problem, though, is that Vita is trailing PSP by about 230k units just after 9 weeks.

Did the ps3 really do that bad year one? Ouch!! Though the way its going I'd be surprised if vita does much more

The PSP was about 2.7M after the 2nd holiday season. If Vita spends most of of the year hovering in the 15-20k range, it will be a good million units behind the PSP after 2 holiday seasons. That would actually put it right about the same number as PS3 (about 1.7M).

And really, if Vita finishes the 2nd set of holidays below 2M LTD, then PS3-type numbers is probably about the best-case scenario for Vita. That can't possibly be what Sony had in mind for Vita coming off the PSP in Japan.

Price and lack of games is killing it, I think. That, and a lack of marketing/buzz outside of a specific otaku/geek/niche group of 20-somethings.

(Put it this way, people I've spoken to here want the Wii U to be 25-30,000 yen or they won't buy it because it'll be 'too expensive' for a home console. The Vita, a portable, is 25,000 and beyond the reach for most teenagers, a demographic where the PSP did well.)

I completely agree with you guys. I was just being optimistic and saying if the Vita stabilizes at 15k over the next few months, without any major software release, it wouldn't be that bad. Just somewhat bad heh. A PS3-level success is okay to me, but probably not to Sony.

Unfortunately I think hardware sales could actually go even lower ... :\

If it starts to consistently sell sub-10K, then it's in trouble.

So far though there is no sign of it stabilising at 15k, with one exception of one week with half decent (relatively speaking) selling release giving it a couple of thousands increase sales are in free fall and under 10k within the next few weeks looks a distinct possibility, the way things are going I'd be surprised now if it goes into this years holiday season with more than a million in the bag

Sony must be working on some game either internally or with a 3rd party that is aimed at boosting the vita's hardware numbers. They know that software moves hardware and right now software is probably the biggest issue for the vita. I hope we get some major announcements soon though I can't quite imagine what that game changing software would be.

I don't think Sony is capable of producing that kind of software, at least not in the near future.

So it'd have to be with a 3rd party, and Sony doesn't have a stellar reputation when it comes aggressively courting 3rd party exclusives; at least if the PSP is any guide.

Really? I always thought sony was pretty good at courting third parties. Sony got a lot of good 3rd party support from the psp at launch. PS3s support was also pretty good it just took forever to come out due to japanese developers inexperience. Sony has always been pretty good with courting 3rd parties for PS, PS2, PSP, and PS3. The problem is that due to psp and ps3's underwhelming sales they lost a lot of leverage on top of the fact that microsoft and (I can't believe I'm saying this) nintendo are aggresively pursuing 3rd parties.

Also selling ps3's first year level sales are abysmal. PS3 is only doing decent now because sony relaunched the system with a massive price cut, redesign, a big new marketing campaign and a steady stream of games anounced at launch finally released.

To be clear, I'm not saying Sony doesn't have good relations with third parties. Rather, I'm talking about their efforts when compared to Microsoft or, more recently, Nintendo in aggressively pursuing developer support.

Taking the PSP as an example, since I was thinking more of their handheld than console business, it's true to say the system had decent support at launch. But that always seemed more due to the fact they were coming off the highly successful PS2, so had a lot of pull and momentum in the market, than cutting co-marketing deals or whatever.

So when the PSP sales started to falter they didn't go aggressive on securing big third-party exclusives. There'd be the occasional half-hearted attempt at E3 where they'd try and bring in Western publishers, but it never amounted to all that much. They weren't very proactive about turning around the fortunes of the system, and instead it came down to Capcom striking gold with a PS2-PSP port.

What I'm saying is Sony needs to be more proactive with the Vita. On hardware pricing and developer support, specifically.

Gran Turismo is perfectly tailorable to be an awesome online game.

For the Japanese market, what they need is something playable in short spurts that also requires grinding. There's every scope that GT could be that game and would carry the big name.

Yes, i know there was a PSP version but it was an absolute shithouse version of the game.

LOTS of challenges, lots of licenses, a well structure level system with comparisons to your friends online, local and online racing.

For sony, they can continue to look for that one killer idea that ignites the show, but they need to realise what it is that makes a portable game attractive as a portable game. Once they grasp that they should be able to figure out how to tailor what they have to fit the match.

the thing is Sony, Nintendo and MS are constantly in touch with various western publishers and deals are getting made and unmade all the time that people just aren't privvy to. I'm sure Sony have been talking (as per the quote to refute -that- article) to everyone and anyone about what they can do in regards to Vita -WAY BEFORE- "oh it's DOOMED!!!!"

Same with Nintendo - they keep getting props for "Panic Nintendo is BEST Nintnedo!" yet from Iwata's take the Monster Hunter for 3DS deal was concluded when MH3rdP was finishing up and it was Capcom who approached Nintendo about the project. Basically - these discussions and decissions are happening all the time - Sony and 3rd party partners haven't laid out their entire plans yet, but i'm sure they will once the US/Euro launch is out the way. You can start to hear the more solid whisperings starting to come (you might have heard the wind rustling in the last 8-4 podcast) (I'm not saying "SECRET GAME SAVIOUR" here - i'm saying that there's likely games coming of note and that the idea that Sony aren't and haven't been working on this is likely wide of the mark)

Relative to console performance, yeah. Still, Japan has made up only about a fifth of DS's business.

PSP started out fairly decently in the States, though. I'm interested to see whether Vita might have a decent start, too, or the PSP's invisibility over the last few years has ruined that.

As much as anything that would be dividends from 10 years of massive home dominance thanks to making the right moves in the mid-90s. I'd say the current position is at least as tough as they had with PS1. At that time, things like cartridges made companies desirable of an alternative to the previous market leader; Sony had to be the best of the rest. Convincing companies to actively choose against an already-strong continuing leader is more of a GameCube position.

PSVita needs a software hit (around 300k) soon, in my opinion.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
Partial numbers for sure, but wouldn't that be sort of unexpected? Isn't Tekken 3DS expected as a semi-bomba?

It's expected to be a bomba, but however...I did this through Google Translation, so this is why I'd like a true translation from someone who knows Japanese indeed.

get6-2 impressions are in

Theatrhythm FF: 40 - 50k as estimate for the first day; if I understand correctly the shipment for the weekend is almost sold out

Binary Domain...not well as expected?

Then, Samurai Warrios and Tekken in the ranking of best selling games on first day.

Then, there's something about New Love Plus, but I don't understand it.

http://ameblo.jp/get6-2/

If anyone has the possibility to translate :p

Waiting for a Japanese-speaker.

Dude, he already asked you to cease bringing halfassed, (miss)translated japanese stuff to the MC threads, don't put yourself on the line :/

This is just get6-2, one retailer we know can be reliable about trends. And I reported the things more clear about it, and the link, without the Japanese original. Only one, and not as I was doing weeks ago. It's not the same thing, come on now XP

You're right in that that would be a wonderful title for the Vita.

Given the dev cycle of GT Mobile, I'll expect it in 2016.

(Actually, while I joke there: I suspect that a GT Vita *is* in production, but Sony are far too scared to actually promote it until they're damn sure they can release it within a year)

by the time GTvita is ready vita will have been discontinued and it'll be moved to smartphones

So why does that blog matter?

They've been pretty spot on with first day estimates / impressions, seeing then how games debuted. And it's the blog Chris always uses for retailers report.

You can edit the translations and just leave the link. I am also interested in knowing more about how FFT and Tekken have fared during their first day of availability.

Edited, since there was also a mistranslation.

About Gravity Daze: I can see it doing 15-20k this week, as well as 10k or lower. It seems it's a great quality game, so it could have legs, but there's also to consider the low install base could limit it.

I wonder what are the sales on PSN. 1800 people rated the game, so the number of people that bought it is what? x5? x10?

I just think that PSN ratings is a good indication of retail sales.
Ragnarok got less than 1000 ratings first week, while Gravity Rush was something around 1200, in second week it got +600.
Also, i think only one full game on JP PSN for which we know PSN sales is Steins Gates for PSP - it was 3000k, does anyone care to checkout , how may ratings it got?

This is a dangerous road to go down.

Not dangerous, but pointless.

Either Sony release the official figures or we just assume the figure is zero because it's not worth speculating over.

It's "How long is a piece of string?" territory.

This is a dangerous road to go down.

I'm just curious what is the buy:rate ration of these things in Japan? I don't know about the West either, but it always seemed to be people that rate what they buy are a slim minority. Plus, Sony really needs all the good news they can get now.

If this is potentially inflammatory discussion I will stop.

Not so much inflammatory, but it leads us no where in a discussion.
It's impossible to predict the sales of a game online without numbers from the source.
And Japan not being a big DD country it's even more pointless.
