Media Create Sales: Week 7, 2012 (Feb 13 - Feb 19)

As there's nothing to compare with in terms of sales, how do you think KI Uprising will/could/should perform ? I know it's not a new discussion here but I'm curious to know if expectations have evolved with all the latest trailers and regarding how the 3DS keep the pace. So, more or less than 500k ltd for KI U ?

I think this game if it does succeed will grow based on word of mouth. It depends but I don't expect massive sales. If it is of good quality and the multiplayer is really fun I could see it developing legs. The multiplayer seems like it will be a much stronger component than previously thought and given Sakurai's work with SSB it could work out well.

Not sure what your point is, though.

The point is that while Vita has to deal with 3DS being on the market, 3DS didn't have a clear road at its launch, either. It wasn't a case of a competitor taking its attention, but just real life taking the attention. It seems people talk about the 3DS weekly sales from launch and line them up with Vita as if its sales were only due to a 25K Yen handheld launching into the market, and forget the context of that launch was a cataclysmic event on the nation of Japan that possibly makes a new portable game system not so much a priority.

Vita has it tough, but 3DS by no means had it easy, because Japan did not have it easy by a far stretch.

OK, I get what you're saying, and there is probably some truth to this. But at the same time, if this were one of the prevailing reasons for the slow start to 3DS sales, it should have recovered in subsequent months, at least somewhat.

Instead, from the charts what we see is a nearly identical curve for both systems, the 3DS just has more units sold in general each week. That fact is what leads me to believe that, while both systems fared poorly to begin with, the 3DS had a certain, small edge. So I'm speculating that it's a competitive one.

Oh, I completely agree that price and lack of games were bigger reasons overall, especially after those first few months. It's just it seems most keep forgetting about what happened around 3DS's launch when talking about comparisons with Vita. 3DS was not in a "normal" market after the first couple of weeks. At the time, there was talk of how Nintendo intended 3DS to be viral with friends showing it off to friends (especially the AR stuff), and that was all short-circuited by the country's natural disasters reducing transportation (remember how Iwata and Miyamoto bucked the trend by coming to E3 instead of staying in the country, and that was 3 months later) and interest in new (and expensive) entertainment products. The slower months led to the mea culpa and severe price drop, which certainly helped in the end. Just don't want it to be forgotten what was going on in Japan those first few months of release.

It is pure conjecture, and it really will be one of those issues the market will have to decide. It might even change from game to game. The Vita has a gorgeous screen, high pixel density, good show. But as you said, the 3DS has an extremely good implementation of 3D (and a higher user base, but duckroll's taking that down). So it's a toss up.

Yeah, this is one of the reasons I asked people about their predictions for GPD before release; it seemed to me that the visual differences weren't likely to make a huge difference to people in terms of their buying decisions, and I was curious how many people felt that the opposite was true.

After Kingdom Hearts 3D, I do think the next big 3DS game will be Mario Tennis Open. Actually, I would have switched its release date with Fire Emblem one, I see a sport Mario game more suitable for the Golden Week, while now it is out in late May. In any case, Mario is on fire + its last sport game sold pretty well = nice sales, with a chance of legs.

It will be interesting to see how Fire Emblem: Awakening performs, though. It seems an important entry in the series, after two remakes.

I live in a relatively small city here in Japanland, but the hype for Kid Icarus is starting to build. I would say it can do quite well, given it's a 'new' franchise for the majority of the market here.

I think the most recent Modern Warfare sold around 200k. Quite impressive. I think it and a couple other games are slowly paving the way.

Heck it's never a huge amount, but I play exclusively on Japanese servers for BF3 and there is always a good selection.

This.

Also, had some time off today and went to an electronics store.
It suddenly struck me that the PSV is 25,000 yen - more expensive than the basic PS3, before you add the "not compulsory unless you want to save" memory card. It puts it completely out of the reach of most teenagers, which is where the PSP did quite well, especially compared to Nintendo. Coupled with no games that appeal to a mass-market here and it's no wonder that it isn't selling.

There isn't really any point to buying a ds these days, the games will play on the 3ds and the price is similar, whereas the ps2 has thousands of games that can only be played on it

And the PS2 literally has thousands of games: 2016 to be precise. I wonder what went wrong this generation. The PS3 in comparison has just a little above 1/3 of the entire PS2 library (746 games so far).

If you keep wondering why the hell does the PS2 sell to this day then there's your answer: 3 times the ammount of games for the current gen console, and a backlog of 101 RPGs.

Multiplayer looks like Gundam VS with Kid Icarus. I can't see how that could be bad.

The main problem I see with Kid Icarus is that there's a very serious appeal disconnect between what the game is, and what the franchise is.

The game wants to be a rail shooter + third person shooter + serious competitive multiplayer with tons of customization and weapons. And the entire game is filled with layers of gameplay and lots of complex systems. The presentation is meant to be cinematic and cool, with lots of flashy bosses and dynamic shit.

All of this appeals pretty strongly to core gamers who play a lot of serious games like this, across many genres ranging from shooters, to RPGs, to versus games.

Yet at the same time, this is a Kid Icarus game. The franchise doesn't have much brand strength, it was never one of the more popular classic Nintendo franchises, and it is really, really kiddie. This game retains much of that. It is kiddie, it is childish, and there's nothing here which really appeals much to older gamers because it looks childish and stupid.

Something like this generally doesn't appeal to older gamers, and lacks the "all-ages" sort of appeal that Mario and Zelda has because it is not as simple as Mario, and it is not as variable as Zelda. There is a fixed specific story in Kid Icarus, and it's basically "Greek Mythology for 12 and under". It probably does appeal to kids and those who watch Saturday morning cartoons though.

So what we have here is game design and systems targeting older core gamers, and presentation and art which appeals to younger kids. It's this sort of disconnect which I find very troubling about the game. I have serious issues getting interested in it at all, and I'm not alone. The question is whether a concept like this can even be successfully marketed at all. I don't believe it can, and I feel that it would have been smarter if Nintendo made a new IP with Sakurai from the start, if they wanted a game which could appeal to and target older core gamers.

Instead they made a game which might be too complex and too "deep" for children to be interested for long, and at the same time too unappealing for those who might be interested in the game design to be interested.

I mean with set release dates. Or does tomodachi collection have one already? Obviously there are going to be some really big games in the 2nd half of the year, they're just not set yet.

Yeah, I guessed you didn't mention deliberately those games still without an official release date and your point is quite understandable, on the other hand I gather Tomodachi and Animal crossing are both supposedly slated for Q1/Q2, probably we'll know more in a couple weeks.

It's just frustrating.

It takes time to make games, but Sony themself has announced (and many are already released) 20 Vita games, so i would exactly call that "call it a day" :) I'm sure more unannounced games from Sony themself are also under work right now.

Many of the 3rd party games have also recently been released on 3DS, so i wouldnt expect to see i.e something like "Resident Evil: Deception" or "Monster Hunter Portable 4" on Vita anytime soon. It is probably a little too early for ports as well.

Sony's strategy with basically all their gaming platforms from the start has been to get a large library of quality games, not so much single tentpole titles. Whether this is by design or just because none of their franchises ever reached that status is of course in question, but it has worked out well for them at times (and not quite as well at others).

It's just frustrating.

Eh not much to get. Sony depends on third party support and always has, even on their consoles. PSP got some great third party support that made it successful at least in Japan. It took time though. Sony just doesn't have the luxury of having sure fire instant hits that Nintendo has with it's properties. With Nintendo you just have to wait for the next Mario whatever usually. Sony also doesn't have any world wide big franchises, all their stuff is regional pretty much.

Vita, Y U no have games?

How could Sony fail so much when 3DS did the same thing. It was so predictable...
Just because it's predictable doesn't mean they had much of a better option. If they were having trouble getting major exclusives for this period, what could they do? Postpone launch a year and try harder to scrounge something up as 3DS has more time to solidify its lead?

Half of the problem is their apparent failure to secure third-party exclusives thus far; the other half is their near-total dependence on third-party support. Sony should have realized around the time that Vita preparations kicked off that they needed to drastically expand their first-party Japanese development, and that they couldn't simply expect to get third-party exclusives by default by virtue of having the most powerful handheld on the market, as PSP did. But evidently, this didn't happen, and the system's fate in Japan is now almost entirely up to the whims of third parties.

While I understand your point, this thinking also assumes that the majority of the core fanbase will be turned off by the style and animation of the game, and this is a huge generalization to make, especially since the admittedly vocal online fanbase is only a small portion of the complete fanbase.

It's obvious Nintendo wants this to succeed, but we'll see if the disconnect is as jarring as you are expecting it to be.

It's a Nintendo game. When was the last time Nintendo game sold badly on Nintendo system? Somewhere in dark era of Gamecube?

Kid Icarus will sell like bananas.
