Men's Hair(less) Head |OT|

Considering my genes and old wives tales, I'm rather lucky to still have a full head of hair.

Every male on my mother's side is bald. My grandfather on my father's side is bald but he and my uncle are both flush, so I'm holding out hope that what I have (which again, isn't bad at all but not like my father) lasts.

It's all up in the air for me. I'm 28 now and feel like it could all disappear at some point.

Don't know if it'd be easier to lose it all later in life or get it out of the way earlier on.

Genetics maybe aren't as important as folk think, going as far back as my great granddads the only hair loss on either side of the family has been my dad thinning a wee bit starting in his 40's. He's 64 now and still has most of his hair, it's happening really slowly. There is no sign of any hair loss in my uncles, cousins or my brother (who is 7 years older than me).

Imagine my surprise as I noticed my crown was thinning a bit last year. I was only 27 at the time :( I'm trying to pluck up the courage to take the clippers to it before it gets properly noticeable but I don't think my missus is keen. I'm not either tbh, I'm pretty sure I'll look worse with no hair but it'll be better than trying to hide it at least.

It's a shame that for every 1 guy that looks very good or even better with a shaved/bald look, 500 others don't.
Possible exaggeration, but still...

Do any of you bald guys get girls? This is what im most concerned about. Do you think most girls will overlook hair loss if you have a good bod + decent personality?

I think guys look better if they embrace their baldness. Don't try to hide it with bad comb overs. You gotta let go of things that are letting go of you.

dude, being bald doesnt just suddenly disqualify your face. Im bald, I have a regular body, I can get girls, even from looks alone (and im not a supermodel or anything)

My mother has some female hair loss and my hair is starting to thin out, so I know I'm going to be bald. My girlfriend's dad is bald so she has the bald gene, so our kids will pobably be super bald lol

It gets alot better when they get older. The younger ones make it a big deal because its all about the looks and what their friends think. Well thats how I see it anyways.

you pick a style a keep with it. Its important to show you care about yourself. Confidence. Thats why its always better to shave than to walk around with bald spots.

I ocassionally let it grow out a bit and while I dont sport a bald spot, I do have a noticeable patch of waaay thinner hair on top, kinda see-through like

never been an issue really. Some girls eve tell me they prefer it. In this particular case full-beard helps.

either way it's fine IMO, as long as you're not a larry david

Not trying to make you feel bad, but you know they are lying right? I never got why some people lie about things like that. I mean, I have imperfections too and I've had girlfriends tell me they prefer it. And all I can think is "no you don't, stop trying to over-compensate."

uh, I've been fully bald and a lot of people told me to let it grow back a bit cause it looks better, im not talking about a "hey ive done this how do I look?" situation

ive been told that by girlfriends, friends, family members, even people who arent traditionally supportive at all

you don't even know how I look, I think for you to assume they're lying is pretty stupid

From the way you wrote it, it made it sound like those girls preferred how you had a thinning spot on your head, not a shaved look.

that's what im saying

I mean people were fine either way, but to put it in another way: every time I let it grow out a bit and then shave it, the first reaction is mostly people telling me it looked better before, and vice versa

every time im looking at my own head it's in the bathroom with massive light on top. Maybe it's just not THAT see-through in the conditions im in with people or something, whatevs

i'll keep mostly shaving still

Gotcha. I interpreted at first as if a girl noticed you had a thinning spot on your head and said "It's okay. I actually like it that way!"

Though not balding, I have had hair thinning issues in the mid scalp area (from my avatar it might look like I have rather good density, but it's all due to how I've worn it), partially due to having my hair exposed to chemicals so frequently (colours and shit), then mix some stress and natural factor and it got quite serious with losing an asston of hair in one go. Atleast I know I'll never have balding issues because no one in my family ever experienced it.

It's very stressing, and I still haven't recovered properly but hopefully I will by the end of this year and then I can stop worrying about it and get a hairstyle where I don't have to be concerned with hiding my thinned out areas properly.

I mean balding in general is just whatever dude

im currently in the process of starting therapy for an unrelated thing (severe eye floaters bumming me out) but it's the same principle: issues that aren't worth stressing about considering you can do absolutely nothing to change them. It's stupid.

what's the point, life's too short, make the best of it instead of wasting it by pointlessly complaining

What about propecia and/or rogaine?
I'm scared to use Propecia because of the alleged sexual side effects and Rogaine is not very convenient when you've got long hair since you don't wash them everyday. I wash my hair once every 2-3 days and rogaine requires me to apply it twice everyday which can make things a bit greasy and uncomfortable. Then there's the thing about rogaine resulting in even more hair loss before it actually starts to show the effects, I get further discouraged by that and just decide to have it healed/grown back naturally considering I don't suffer from hair loss at the moment and do actually seem to be recovering back to my pre chemically treated hair days (ie. August last year).

this is me and my brother (me on the back) a few years ago:

my "hair" is a mess there, but when properly combed that hair style was alright. Yet you can still see how it looks thin and balding-like

my brother had the exact same issue, but he started taking drugs like propecia (it wasnt exactly propecia, worth noting. It was similar chemicals though, it was like a pancreas cancer drug that supposedly grew hair as a side effect) REAL young. Like 15 years old young or some crap, and it seems to have worked wonderfully for him. He basically still looks like this pic now, at 30, whereas I have barely any left at 23.

I still ocassionally think about starting to take it to see what happens, but people mostly tell me that at best it just retains the hair you already have (tho my brother DID grew new, stronger hair) so whatever.

Don't even bother? That doesn't seem like great advice. Not everyone can flaunt a shaved look. Propecia could help.

I agree, and frankly a person doesn't even have to use Propecia. From personal experience I've had a lot of success with Rogaine-type products, but you're not going to get much support here. Most people basically see it as two options: Gradually bald or shaved bald.

Also I edited my original response so hopefully it was clearer about what I meant.

So do you guys shave against the grain or with it? I've tried both. I love how the head looks and feels when you shave against the grain but I get a lot of ingrown hair in two or three days.

25 and bald. I buzz at the lowest setting and rock the scruff look. I have a better dating life bald then I did with a full head of hair.

Wasn't their already a baldness |OT|, or does that one not count because it focused on involuntary baldness? Anyway, you'll probably see a lot of rehashed conversations from there. A lot of people who are balding and are more concerned with stopping or mitigating it than shaving their heads.

Anyway, I started balding at 18, shaved my head at 21, and I haven't looked back since. Got a big boost to self-esteem and it's a lot easier to manage to boot. I use Headblade's Headslick shaving lotion, which works wonders. Shave every 2-3 days. Currently rocking a beard and a handlebar, which evens things out nicely.

Always against. I figure what's the point in shaving if you can feel the stubble. I've never got an ingrown hair on my head and that's mostly because I use an excellent product (the aforementioned headslick) and a sharp razor. You can find all sorts of DIY ways of keeping your razors fresh online.

Wouldn't know. I have an amazing, supportive wife who loves my bald head and was totally on board with me shaving. It's more of a self-confidence thing. You're going to have more self-confidence with a shaved head than with a bald spot, I promise you.

How in the hell would any derma or doctor for that matter prescribe finasteride at 15 years old. God damn that's dangerous.

Also, the side effects aren't 'alleged'. They've been scientifically documented and proven. The percentages of those affected is highly questionable and under much legal scrutiny at the moment.

He was kinda desperate. He's a musician and had a whole teenage audience thing going, plus he's got an issue on one of his ears that I really shouldnt discuss publicly since some people here know of him and he likes to keep it a secret of sorts, lol

It was still super risky and stupid but ey, worth it I guess

Salsa lives in latin america, I doubt they have strict laws for these things. You can buy finasteride online without prescription, though I've heard some are placebo.

Okay, so I'm considering going on minox and use nizoral shampoo to manage my hair for the time being (between NW1 and NW2). I'm thinking of also going on propecia if I don't see any results a year or so from now. I'm getting in a buzz cut in a month or two through (I'm curious how I'd look bald) before I go on the drugs. I have a few questions for any of bald/balding GAF:

1. I'm going to be taking a before picture. Should I take it before or after I get a buzz cut (or even both)?

2. What are some recommended over the counter minoxidil and nizoral shampoos?

3. How does one use minoxidil when you have a buzz cut? Won't it take forever to dry?

4. Who would I go to to get a prescription to propecia/fin? I don't have a doctor atm, so is there anywhere else I could go (possibly some one more in-the-know ala dermatologist)?

5. Are the potential side effects of propecia/fin permanent after getting off the medicine? They sound really scary, but if they go away after getting off the drug then I don't particularly have a need to worry.

nah, there were, he got it through some "shady" music business people for sure

Ah, I just assumed since in my case, I live in Puerto Rico and even though we have the FDA up our asses, local pharmacies sell some over the counter drugs, without the need of a prescription lol

A buzz cut is actually helpful when you first start applying Minoxidil I've found. Makes it easier to reach the skin of the scalp instead of just applying it to the hair. You might want to experiment first; you may not have to take Propecia. It's possible that just applying Minoxidil alone will prevent further hair loss and even encourage growth. Minoxidil generally comes in either foam or liquid form, both of which dry pretty quickly. You can also get Minoxidil in foam bottles from Costco, $50 or so for a 6 month supply.

My dilemma is this: thinning in the front and at the typical top back, and I would have no problem shaving my head(even though I would have to do it almost daily, shit grows back fast!), however, I've found that I have developed the ability to profusely sweat from my forehead when it's really warm(which is normal) but also even when I'm seemingly cool. So now the issue is compounded by the fact the more hair I lose, the more I have a sweaty-ass forehead, and so if I were to shave it, I would have to have windshield wiper sunglasses on at all times or some shit.

Ugh.

There's an actual hair loss thread here on GAF. I've posted my musings in there.

I'd recommend lipogaine and some type of Ketoconzole shampoo. Regenpure is great, but it's expensive.

Beyond that - only look towards Finasteride if you're truly desperate. It's a dangerous drug and the long term effects it has on the body (not just your hormones but other facets - i.e. neurologically) are poorly understood.

What about minoxodil? any dangerous side effects?

Edit: I've heard you need to use it twice a day? Will using it once not work?
