the thing that bums me out about taking pills is the fact that you HAVE to do it, daily, forever, as in: if you stop, it's all undone

it gets expensive

Some people say that it ages your skin but beyond that there's nothing really. You'll need to keep using indefinitely though which sounds like a chore.

Does it need to be twice a day or can it be once?

I'm at stage 2 so maybe I can try and hold it with minoxidil, would probably still shave (I like the 5 O clock shadow on my head)

What about minoxodil? any dangerous side effects?

Edit: I've heard you need to use it twice a day? Will using it once not work?

Minoxidil is fine; may cause dandruff but results vary by person so you really have to try for yourself. Applying it twice a day is best. You might be able to get away with applying it just once a day, but results are best for twice a day (from personal experience). As for it being a chore, well...that's part of the deal. If you want to keep your hair you're going to apply it twice a day for as long as you want to keep it. You can have the occasional skipped days but you do want to remain consistent.

Not really, no. The only thing I have -ever- heard were some anecdotal reports online of people claiming it caused premature aging of their skin. Considering it's the internet and there's a lot of crazies running rampant - it's mostly nonsense. It's never been scientifically proven as a topical solution. Furthermore, most of those people (if it's accurate) are probably just naturally aging to begin with - considering people with MPB usually start losing their head in the mid to late 20's anyway.

Otherwise, it's perfectly safe unless you have issues with blood pressure. Perhaps some unwanted facial (or body hair).

You -can- use it once per day, but it's more effective using it morning and night.

What was your routine? Once in the morning and before bed?

You guys are so attached to your hair that you'd be willing to pay for and take pills every day for the *rest of your lives*!?

It's hair. Just shave it off. It's awesome once you get used to it.

Yeah, basically morning and night. If you can make it a part of your daily routine (in accompaniment to brushing/flossing/other hygienic needs), it's pretty easy to do consistently. Takes about 30 seconds to a minute.

One last question to those who have used minoxidil.

Did you guys apply it on your whole scalp or just in some parts? thinking of putting it on the crown (though I don't have hair loss there, yet) and on the front

I apply it on the scalp and hairline just to be sure.

oh i've gotten used to it. It's mostly just a "what if" scenario, considering how it went super well for my brother and we kinda have the same genes

Well, I shaved my head in 2008 and never looked back. It was quite liberating and did wonders for my self-confidence, especially after holding on to thinning hair for way too long. Embrace the baldness, baby!

27, Going bald at the front, except for one small patch right in the middle. The fuck, nature!? I have really dark, thick hair too so to shave it now will look shit. I'm screwed for the time being.

I kept it going with Regaine (minoxodil) for a while but kept running out and jot restocking in time which limits it's effectiveness. Seemed to fall out more quickly when I stopped that's for sure. I tried Propecia too but got scared of the possible side effects.

It's supposed to be your maternal grandfather you take after afaik.

You sure about this? Pretty sure this was the thought until relatively recently, now it's thought that you can inherit it from any side of the family. I guess I'll be the test for that as half my Dad's family is bald (including my Dad), but everyone on my Mom's side has hair :p.

I started losing it when I was 25ish. Shaved at 26, now three years running. Do it every two days in the morning, takes 10-15 minutes max. Mach III for my shaving with a razor change once a month. Really easy overall. Man, I used to stress about my hair for so long but after shaving it I don't even give it a second though- incredibly liberating. I have a chinstrap that I rock with it, overall its a good look. I will say that my darker skin helps pull off the look for sure. My family is pretty much used to it.

With regards to the ladies, nothing has really changed. As long as you're not chasing 18 year olds, you'll be fine. I'm in the upper 20s market for dating and its a non-factor.

My hair is perfectly fine. I have a permanent... like... part in my hair now, though. Years of my mother braiding my hair as hard as she possibly can :(

Worst part about going bald, everyone thinks they are the first person to notice it and have to bring attention to it, large group around or not.

I dont know how many times Ive had to have the conversation now around friends, family, and co worker.

I always know when its coming. DUDE!? I dont want to be a dick, but youre going bald! Typically happens around large groups, super uncomfortable because everyone wants to take a look.

I've had a lot of different hairstyles so I guess once I go completely bald, I won't regret anything

I'm 17 years old here, had the long hair thing

My baldness is at stage 2 so I still have hair on top, but I haven't allowed it to grow in like a year or so. I don't know how it would look like now.

So much better shorter. And I think it looks good when you keep the hair at the sides.

If you are so ugly you look bad with a shaved head, I have bad news for you. You looked bad when you had hair, too.

Balding, shaved (usually), and quite unconcerned about it.

I've been buzzing my hair down to a 1, or 2 for over a decade. My hairline wasn't receding, I just enjoy the look and low maintenance of it. And when my hair does start to go, I'll already be prepared. For facial hair, I usually keep a very short goatee as well, although right now I'm keeping 'Manicured Scruff' as the OP would describe it.

I still have about 90% coverage on top, but it has been thinning for years. I'm 32, happily married, and have grown to accept where my hairline is headed.

I wasn't always so accepting, and I will say that from personal experience I suggest staying away from Propecia. I was on it for five years. The stuff DEFINITELY works.

There are lots of possible side effects, several of which aren't reversible. I lucked out in that I never experienced any of the ones currently known about, but there remains the possibility of prostrate problems in the future for anyone who has used it.

Bottom line: it alters your natural hormone levels. That may save your hair, but if you start growing boobs and your penis stops working, you've chosen poorly. Also, the day you stop using the pill, your hair loss plays catch up to where it would've been naturally. Read up on it carefully and consult a doctor before trying it.

Bald is awesome.

I really wish there was an OP for hair loss solutions, as in solutions to keep hair from growing.

Anyone knows of such a thing, short of say, chemo?

Still have all my hair at 32, but I might be joining you guys. I have terrible balding genetics from both sides of my family lol.

I am lucky to have dense, thick hair, or did when I was in my teens, but by the time I was 20 I started seeing a lot of hairs coming out in the shower (more than I did when I was a few years younger). About 25 now and my hair has thinned some, but isn't at a stage where it looks bad or even really noticeable. The damn near moment I begin to notice it thinning or see any scalp, well, out comes the razor. I have no qualms with being bald, but I'm in no rush and might as well enjoy my hair while it lasts. I'm guessing I'll start shaving in about 3 years, really just depends on when it gets to a point where I look at it and say "aw, yeah, definitely is noticeable." Then, fuck that shit, clean shaven.

Also, on the plus side, I can grow a killer beard. Further, my brother (who is 30) has clearly thinning hair, and I can follow his timeline pretty well so far, meaning I'll absolutely be shaving my head by the time I'm 30. I'd be surprised if it isn't in 3-4 years though.

I embraced (sort of) the baldness a couple of years ago, and now I cut my own hair using a #1 on the sides/back and a #5 on top. The top of my head is so thin, however, that a #5 makes it look like the sides/back do. It blends well. I might eventually go full razor head, but I have a couple of moles that are raised up just enough that I'd be worried about nicking them with the razor.

I do get lazy from time to time and let my hair go 3 months without a buzz, and that's when I get a little self-conscious. Nothing a hat doesn't fix, if I can wear it, but I try to keep it trimmed around every 6 weeks or so.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that I'm turning 29 this year. Family history? Mom's side has a lot of thinness, and dad's side has the front and back baldness. I was screwed over from the start, but I made the most out of having a lush head of hair when I did. Mullets, mohawks, liberty spikes, long "touching the ass" hair; I did it all!

I used to have a really nice, thick head of hair, and always kept it long. I'm 24 and no longer do, though. Not bald, but surely heading in that direction.

Sad.
