Why TLOU2 had crunch?

Combination of unreasonable expectations, bad management, and I'm sure sky high ambitions. I never said mutli-platform development was the only cause for crunch, but in Activision's case, constantly needing to have ready yet another new Call of Duty was a different level of pressure and crunch. They don't many, many years the way Naughty Dog and some other studios do.

On topic: I hope the recent acquisitions prove to be a good thing for the industry like games everywhere. I can't imagine an industry filled with GaaS and subscription fees. Give me muh single player blockbusters.

Psygnosis, which they did nothing with.

They also had shares and investment in many different studios that they abandoned, like Quantic Dream for example.

As well as the many studios they closed one after the other in the late years of PS4...

Konami is probably worth way more, even tho they make no games.

I mean...are they though? You said it yourself, they make no games

lol I'd assume they will just try to buy those select IP like when THQ was going under. They don't have much going on in terms of their teams and the company as a whole would be a waste, so if it happens, i think lots of us are guessing correctly that it going to be for individual IP or something so Konami can go back to making bottled water and gambling and shit lol

11 Targets, 11 Buyers in the OP. I'm gonna do a 1 for 1 for each of them because I'm nice like that.

Google - WBIE. Warner Brother Discovery may not divest it, but if they do Google will swoop them up only to kill them a year later.
Apple - Bandai Namco. Mainly for iOS games, which will make people cry.
Sony - Capcom. Resident Evil and Monster Hunter movies are already distributed by Sony. Already some synergy there.
Tencent - Epic. Tencent already owns ~40% of Epic. Just need to sweet talk and buy out Sweeney.
Meta - EA. Build that meta Zuckerberg. Using FIFA and Madden as part of their metaverse must appeal to them.
Microsoft - Take Two. This will cost a pretty penny and will go higher than their current market cap by a fair amount. Will divest Zynga.
Nintendo - Square Enix. Out of left field, I know, but this enhances Nintendo strengths in their home market with major IPs
Amazon - Konami. Not necessarily for the IPs but for the other side of the business.
Disney - Sega. Cheap enough where Disney can get back in the game industry without much risk. Can mine some IPs to other parts of the business.
Embracer - CDPR. I see this is a possible fit that will further grow Embracer's publishing status
Netflix - Ubisoft. They already have a few products together based on Ubi's IPs and Hastings has mentioned how important gaming is to them.

They wanna hear gaming news. To these guys, Sony pictures doesn't exist. Only Sony Playstation.

I still can't believe Sony will now own funanimation and crunchyroll. Biggest wtf for me.

I'm more shocked that we still don't even know what they are going to do with that !

If they made some Anime only Streaming thing then I'd be like 'ohhhhhh, i see now" its been literally like 5 fucking years lol So i'm not really 100% sure their game plan, I don't know if its just to corner the market or something. I don't now what the final plan seems to be with all that.

Anime is a big hit in Japan and West. Having the market for that medium, means alot of money for Sony. Especially with the monthly payments for these services. These people who watch these stuff, don't care about gaming at all.

Sony is still a big company, with tons of branches. They need to bolster their other studios, not just gaming division.

A fucking BARGIN compared to Konami.

Thats more then enough reason to support Sony might likely just buy off some of those IP vs waste anything buying them. I'd even argue Sony would be better off just fucking making a new IP with the Silent Hill director aka Siren esk and doing a new ip with Kojima with spys or some shit lol

The structure they created of having Bungie as a multiplatform publisher inside SIE but outside PS Studios opens the door to buy more publishers to keep them inside SIE keeping them as themselves, with their label and continuing as multiplatform.

It would be nice to see in this way Capcom (+ Dimps for Street Fighter), Sega, Kadokawa (or at least FromSoft) and Square Enix. Then I'd include ARC System Works inside PlayStation Studio.

Who once owned about 40% of the UK market
That 40% figure is from 1995-96 but Sony bought them in 1993. I guess Sony made a good job with them 😆

They also continued to release games on Sega and Nintendo for several years. That totally goes against the narrative that buying Psygnosis killed Sega or whatever.

Crazy how easy it is to change history when you have an agenda.

NO true. They had them make some nice games, even PC ports and then shut them down.
Still listen to some PS fans SONY doesn't buy or close studios, doesn't buy publishers, the PS was the 1st CD system and FF7 the 1st RPG ever LOL

Sony have messed up many times, going into the car business is one they're doing right now. Not too long ago they were in financial trouble, they keep making stupid decisions like this and they could be again.
Seems their car business is doing fine so far. Their stocks even raised 3.6 percent on announcement on CES and it looks awesome, with great tech. That you think it’s a mistake does not make a mistake. Lets see in a few years if it was, but looking at it I think they’ll make a great car. Yes they were in financial trouble a few years ago, mainly because of ps3 and not well selling phones, but they’ve recovered and are actually making much more sound business decisions now.

Doing great now absolutely and long may it continue but the car business is incredibly competitive and expensive, but good luck to them.

Well, having any actual knack for this bussiness would be a good start. Being able to nurture talent to generate potent IPs would be a good start.
Sins of the past. Xbox executives over the years have definitely screwed up. Several times.

It does seem that the current leadership is at least a lot more enthused.

Not rewriting history here but it wasn't until late 2018 that they had more than 5 studios. With what little resources they had, they were OK in the IP department. It would be interesting to see how much Sony invested into studios comparative to Xbox in between 2000-2018.

First of all, Microsoft can and will acquire one of these Japanese publishers. That is a matter of when.

Second of all, EA is a hard cookie for buying because they are about to lose their Fifa license and a lot of their sports licenses won't carry over if the games aren't available to all consoles.

We just saw how MLB The Show kinda went this way with Sony.

So, with EA what are you really getting for it? Microsoft has no need for it with having Call of Duty. It's too bloated expense wise for probably Sony. So you are looking at Amazon, Apple, etc. Would they want this company? Maybe. It's a huge risk for any company and an expensive one at that.

Ubisoft actually is hard to buy for others.

Take2 is the real crown jewel left. It's not cheap either.

Netflix is obviously coming in strong soon with their latest comments and we know Meta, Tencent, and EA were the other bidders for Activision.

From software means you have to buy Kadokawa. It's part of that entity. Sega comes with Sammy. Konami with their casinos. Namco Bandia is a merged entity.

This makes Capcom and Square the most logical spots to go. But, not the only ones. Just the easiest fits. Capcom maybe has the least to offer though.

Don’t you find interesting that Microsoft was not interested in funding studios but more than happy to throw billions in purchases?

Not making excuses for them. Previous management definitely was lukewarm in their commitment. Not prepared to dip more than a big toe into the water.

Sony were throwing millions back then during this era on studios, not sure that makes them the best nurturers of talent. Just more committed.

yes because now netlflix, hulu, etc cant have anime. how will they combat a niche company with 2-5 million subscribers..

It’s possible Sony just buys Sega, for all Sega IP and no studios. And SegaSammy becomes AtlusSammy.
Possible Sony only buys 2 franchises off Konami. MGS and Castlevania.
Both companies have alot of non-gaming fat.
But they will just probably just buy Capcom. They are pure gaming assets, mostly. Less fat, they would need to cut.

Yes! Xenon 2 was amazing. I still can't believe the music they could make out of the Amiga. Megablast still the best soundtrack.

Isn't the CDTV version just using red book audio from the CD? I don't think the Amiga 500 version sounded like that.

I mean...are they though? You said it yourself, they make no games

They publish games tho, and Momotaro Dentetsu was one of the most succesful releases in Japan of last year.

None, the money in gaming is done on software and distribution of software. They want to horder as many big devs as possible and with the launch of Spartacus on PC, become one of the main sellers of video games anywhere.

Yes I can see the two clowns Jimbo and Hermen buying EA so they can then put Fifa and Madden day one on Gamepass.

Sony has been working closely with Bungie for a long time.

I don't see why their deal needs to have anything to do with MS and their Activision Acquisition. People attempt to insist that it is to me is just bizarre.

People who think this obviously have no idea of the timelines involved in multi-billion dollar acquisitions. One does not just phone up on Monday and have a deal by Friday. Both conversations will have started months and months ago, 6-12 probably.

MSFT-ACTV deal will still take 18 months from now before it actually completes.

We've seen too much crazy shit over the last 2 weeks for me to even say that can't happen lol

I was joking, but you are correct, I actually forgot about that game so that needs to be factored. I know they still put out smaller games and more so are no longer in the big AAA space with those other IP they own. I'm like 99% they still do that soccer game

I think there's a big overlap between people who care about gaming and people who care about anime. But there's not a big overlap between PlayStation and other Sony divisions.

Come to me, when those companies have the same library as those small services. Both of those services combined produce less anime titles compared to funanimation.

Their gaming division is most profitable. But content wise, less than other division's.

To brand recognition, people will look more often at your most profitable section.

Lol no it sounds like this. I use it as my ringtone.

Yeah, that's the correct video. That first one is some kinda remix that uses sounds from both the Amiga 500 and CDTV versions. The CDTV version uses CD audio AFAIK.

So yeah, anyone who thought they were going to be strict on their 18.5b figure can throw that out the window.

Where’s that $1 bn number coming from, based on their slides it’s like $11-12 billion of the original announced $18 billion remaining.

Yeah that number is off.

Not to mention Bungie for example will only cost 2.4B at the time of purchase, with the rest being spent throughout the next couple of years on hiring etc.
