Metal Gear Ac!d Impressions

Picked up Ac!d about an hour ago...

First impressions with about 20 mins of play.... its metal gear alright, but the art direction is different, and kinda cool. The text in non-snake cut scenes goes by way too quickly, even on slow, but I think that is because it is kanji heavy. The box is awesome because since PSP cases are clear it has box art on the inside of the case... and the inside box art is AWESOME. Definetely a cool, more anime-esque slant on Shinkawa inspired designs.

The first cut scene/intro has
you following the female lead "Bravo" through a corridor run, until she gets stopped by some huge military dude. Then it cuts to snake and Roger (the major in this game) explaining the situation. Snake starts in the woods.

Oh, and the main menu is:

Load Game

MGS3 Link (althouh since im not connected to USB, this selectable)

How's the whole card battle system work?
So is it a buy? (I'm not that big of a fan, but I generally like MGS)

Need a second game on ma Psp...

Dont know yet. Still cut scenes.

Do you have lumines? if not, BUY BUY BUY. If not, Ridge Racers... if not MINGOL!

I have 5 PSP games, im waiting to find out if Shinsangoku is any good before taking the plunge on number 6.

All reading... and the game has a very peculiar sense of humor so far.

One doll is talking to another doll:

"Older sister, what is this strange smell"
"It is bernoconium *sp?* it is used to make people numb if they are hurt"
"Oh, did someone get hurt?"
"No, we hijacked the plane"

Go away. Go back and play. More gameplay impressions beyond "its metal gear alright", whatever that can be taken as.

Haha! More marionette speak:

"Hey older sister, are all these people dead"
"hmm, I wonder, all these smart americans...if they had listend clearly to what we said, they would have been able to help people"
"awww, thats boring. it would be better if they were all dead"
"but if they were all dead, we wouldn't have any more hostages would we? There wouldn't be any negotiations."
"so then i guess it is good we hijacked this"
"thats enough elegy, shut up already"

This shit is DEFINETELY not making the US version.

It damn well better. Fuck political correctness.

I just tried to smooth talk my store into handing me AC!D and MGS3 a day early tonight but it was fission mailed ;_;

I'll guess I'll resort to bringing my PSP to work and running out at lunch break to get them :P

btw, why did Konami drop their english taglines? I looked at the AC!D and MGS3 display boxes and the backs are just like other Konami games except the black bar that usually says stuff like "HIGH SPEED ROBOT ACTION" or "SUPER STEALTH ACTION" thing is gone. Bah, I loved the goofy english.

Heh, that's a touchy subject for the US market alright. And it's funny considering how Kojima had to edit MGS2 because of 9/11, IIRC. So it's obviously intentional. But is Kojima even involved in this game?

BUT about the game...is it similar to X-com? I've been hoping that it will be for the longest time now.
And are there any voices in the game, or just textboxes?

I'm pretty sure there's no voices as there weren't any at TGS. It was the first thing I wanted to check for at TGS and it was sad but alas no voice. For some reason a 3D MG game with codecs and all having no voices just feels wierd. One UMD is much larger than the 2 CDs MGS was on so I doubt it's a space issue. I'm guessing AC!D just didn't have budget or enough development time to do full voice acting.

...or voice acting would kill the battery. But if that's true I wonder what will happen to the ToE port.

No English language option, then? ;)

Would the gameplay be understandable to a non-Japanese speaker?

Ok so Ive played for about 45 mins of gameplay before I gave up to hang out with the gf. Here is what i think so far.

John tv:
so how is it?
tetsuoxb:
its cool
tetsuoxb:
but its a card game
tetsuoxb:
so everything is turn based and it feels kinda odd at first
tetsuoxb:
im still only one stage in because i had some stuff to do... so i cant tell if it is as deep as something like card fighters clash... but it isnt terrible or great so far, it is just a card game.
------------------
This being said, Im not a huge card game fan. I skipped Baiten Chaos, and I am a firm believer that the best card game ever was Card Fighter's Clash. The system seems deep, but I think im not far enough in to expose it. However, I really like the art direction and insanity of the game so far. Metal Gear "not real" haters are gonna have a field day with this. The female codec "guide" is a psychic - the plane was hijacked by someone who plays with marrionettes, and its pretty much off the wall. It is definetely a departure in alot of ways, but still the same in many others.

To answer questions:
There is 1 option in the options menu - TEXT SPEED. So no english subs.
Everything is reading, no voice overs.
If you dont speak Japanese I think you could try and play, but alot of the more complicated bonus cards that affect stats are in Japanese only. You wont understand the story worth a shit. Hell, I am pretty close to fluent in Japanese (one year til the final proficency test) and they are using some kanji that they dug out of some closet somewhere. Thankfully once you get control of the game, you get control of clearing text boxes like a codec sequence, so I can look up shit.
Never played XCOM so I can't compare.

Oh and the 2 is on the back of this game again. Like all other PSP games. THE REGION LOCK! OH TEH NOES!

Ill play on the bus and at school some more tomorrow and update.

Yeah, except for the fact that alot of the Japan GAF members know people on PSP teams and have asked this.

That and Sony has gone on the record several times about region lock. So sony would have to be pulling a PSX and lying to consumers, along with developers who are friends of some people who keep saying NO FUCKING REGION LOCK!

has anyone been able to test jp games on a us PSP yet?

no?

then we really don't know, do we?

Have you tested your life on another universe to make sure your living? No? Then we don't really know do we?

Don't turn region lock into some kind of Cartesian Universal Skepticism.

I'm aware of the official denials, i'm just treating this whole situation with a healthy dose of skepticism.

God know, i want to be able to play Super Robot Wars PSP on my us system, i just don't want to get my hopes up.

healthy is not the word.

Seems to me like Acid will end up being a decent game, probably relegated to the same realm as Ghost Babel was, though - definitely not a bad game, but more of a side story with some weird shit than anything else.

Strangely enough when tetsuo mentioned Marionettes I immediately thought of one of the early Ghost Babel bosses, Marionette Owl.

Hopefully there are more exploding prisoners this time.

I played about 5 mins before I had to return to work and I just read the manual at work.

The MGS3/MGA connect works like this:

0. Beat MGSA once so you have a clear save.
1. Connect the PSP -> PS2 with USB cable
2. In MGS3 go to "Special" menu and select "MGA link"
3. Turn on MGA and go to MGS3 connect and choose it.
4. Recieve a quote "item" in MGS3

So we gotta wait until someone finishes MGA to find out what the unlockable for MGS3 is.

Also wtf is wrong with the text in the game!?! It's like I'm playing a first generation GB game. The font is terrible and the fact that you can neither stop the text nor SPEED IT UP OR SKIP IT is BS. I'm hoping at least that when you beat the game you can skip text sections on replays. Also not being able to skip cutscenes or you know PAUSE THE GAME will be annoying on travels when your in the middle of 10 mins of cutscenes and you need to get off the train and go to work. I guess sleep mode is the only answer.

*edit*NM, just saw that Tetsuoxb says you can control the text read out like a codec once you get past the intro cutscenes and gain control.*edit*

Anyhow besides the worst presentation seen yet in a PSP game (rushed?) The graphics are actually pretty damn impressive and look better than I thought it would even after playing it at TGS. It's pretty near MGS2 quality which is yay. Dunno about the gameplay much as I was going through the opening scenes which were text text text before I had to go to work.

...and about the usage of pretty hard sophisticated kanji, that's pretty normal for the series IMO. MGS1 and MGS2 used a lot of tough and not often seen kanji and I'd guess MGS3 will too. I'd put the reading difficulty in MGS games as near the Xenosaga series from my experience.

I don't think Kojima actually had much of anything to do with Ac!d did he?

Pretty sure it was posted here that MGA was made by the same team that did Metal Gear Ghost Babel for the GBC, which was an awesome game.

I'm not sold on this card battle crap though. :\

Im in the third stage of acid... im saving gameplay impressions and stuff for a tokyopia article that I am working on tonight, but I wanted to tell everyone now...

This game will face serious localization issues.

The enemy group has a very survival horror slant to it. The plane take over just got worse in the fact that they killed the pilot and copilot in the cockpit, with knives, and they show this scene. I cant imagine a localization that includes this and doesnt take some serious flack from 9/11 groups. I am going to the signing events this weekend in Osaka and hopefully I can ask scott dolph or kojima about it personally.

As far as card gameplay goes - I can say this much so far - It grows on you quickly, and the stealth elements of the series are still maintained.

So far I am starting to really dig the game, but I am only about 2.5 hours in.

Well, I been impresssed with Chain of Memories so far, and it sounds like Ac!d will be my second most enjoyed digital card game experience.

can somebody who played xcom compare the battle systems? xcom:ufo defense is one of my favorite games of all time, i'd love something similar in this game.

i hate that we live in a world -- or more importantly, games are a medium -- where the idea of turning something like this into fiction is bad or wrong and worthy of censorship.

not that i disagree with the assessment -- i could totally see konami castrating this game. just saying.

hey tetsuo, you know how the ticket system'll work for the upcoming signings? I still need to read that page you linked to ... apparently you show up early and get a voucher for the actual signing later that day? I think.

Frost, there is a 14.2598347% chance I may join you tomorrow, so let me know your plan just in case. I'm most likely going to be too busy, but there is SOME possibility now, whereas yesterday there was none.

Thanks!

John, do you ever look at the PSP's screen and get down on your knees and thank god you're alive to witness it's awesomeness?
