I need to finish this game so I can just have an opinion on the story haha. I feel like I keep reading it's bad and waiting it for it to get bad but it hasn't yet.
Chapter 1
was pretty great, and capped off pretty great, too. We shall see what comes.

i guess i am being too critical of it. and the ending just doesn't help it. but the fact is. the game is awesome. i feel like i am the one making my own little stories with the gameplay. i just wish all the work i put into the game reflected in a bigger arch that would make more sense.

2nd chapter has some really cool ideas, and missions. but tbh, some of them, as cool as they are, don't belong there. like the extreme versions of missions you have done before. thats like side opsn quality of mission.

I was reading a tweet from dawg that said that Kojima wanted BB to be more like Max from Fury Road, and they would cut most of hte dialogue to do that... like almost upon release... if this is true, this is crazy. compromising the original vision and structure to fit a character that doesn't even represent MGS or at least very little.

Anyways. i am still having a blast with the game.

I do wish the game was a lot smaller tho. like instead of doing outposts, have really intricate fortresses or buildings to inflitrate. i feel that way the missions would be longer and more involved. Than short a la PW. Also, you would feel more invested. I think most people agree some of hte most exciting bits in TPP are the bigger missions that include a bigger set piece and infiltration. The best example is Camp Omega from GZ.

It just makes more sense to have a more limited area if it means its gonna be more complex and interesting.

Just my opinion at almost 50% and close to 50hrs of game time.

how were you fine with a disappointing story, if you don't mind me asking. ?

it answered a lot of the question's i had and the ending was pretty cool but was expecting a bigger grander conclusion to the last metal gear game. Im fine with it because i enjoyed the gameplay so much really fun game

I think if the fallout hadn't happened and everyone knew Kojima was gonna give us MGS 6 in a few years a lot of that hate would disappear. I really don't think this game started as "the last MGS that has to bring closure to everyone's existence and align the planets," but instead was just another chapter in the series. MGS4 tried way too hard to be the end all and suffered a lot for it. And to be honest I think MG story is at its best when it doesn't try to explain everything.

Hell, there's 11 years or so in the timeline before MG, you could have easily squeeze a few more games in there. Maybe that was the plan. Luckily what we have is an amazing sandbox with a cryptic weird story that doesn't get in your way. Two thumbs up.

So I'm pretty much maxed out on my unit staff across the board, and not enough materials to expand any platforms just yet.

Where is a good place to farm for materials?

Also, should I just dismiss my lowest rank guys so there's room for new recruits, or will the recruits just go straight to the waiting room?

Edit: I'm at mission 14

If this is true then this is the stupidest thing I've ever read. Like woooooooow.
Fuck mad max

I think lower rank guys get replaced by higher rank guys. Or at least if you auto assign. I could be wrong about this.

After finishing TPP, I have to say MGS3 still has the best story contained in one game. Nice setup of events, nice closure. They could've just let the story of Big Boss go at that point, and it would've been fine.

I just found out that using the Phantom Cigar while the Walkman is playing music causes the timer to fast forward as well.
Now it looks like he's been listening to the same Iron Maiden song on repeat for the past several hours.
Or...from his point of view, the song itself slowed down just enough so he could still hear it normally as time passed. Or something.

If this is true then this is the stupidest thing I've ever read. Like woooooooow.
Fuck mad max

.

i don't think that's true. i think he originally intended BB to be more silent like the character mad max, which is what kojima himself actually said. not fury road in particular. mad max was always largely silent. and BB in this game is similar to that. people actually believe that kojima cut tons of kiefer dialogue from the game because he liked fury road? LOL

EDIT:

That was a photoshop I made for the lulz. Pls 4give.

oh...ha! thanks for clarifying

Eh, while i'm not as disappointed with the plot as most others seem to be I still think that MGS1, 2 and 3 are the holy trinity of the series.

It was the perfect trilogy in regards to both gameplay and story telling. Everything is wrapped up in a nice bow. MGS1 is the perfect start to the series. MGS2 ends the chronological arc in the best way possible (still my favourite game in the series) and MGS3 is the perfect prequel which perfectly explains why BB becomes the big bad.

My view on Chapter 2 was a positive one at first, I thought they made us replay the missions on extreme, subsistence and full stealth to show us that we can Big Boss's. Not everyone chooses to play MGS on extreme difficulty and forcing us to play those missions before mission 46 made sense. It reinforced the ending "twist" and made it seem more believable.

That however was until I learned that in fact you DO NOT have to play those missions, instead you can dick around for a bit with the side ops and then the mission pops up. There was no build up to why
Venom got his memory back
, there was no build up to Quiet leaving, there was no closure on Eli, Mantis and the child soldiers, there was no closure on why Codetalker warned us about
Kazuhira
, there was no NEED to pad the second chapter out with rehashed Chapter 1 missions. It all feels out of place and tacked on. It felt like it had been gutted and patched back up with whatever they could fill it with. Basically it felt a bit like Destiny.

Then for us to find out that a pivotal mission as well as a whole other chapter had been cut that would've explained a shit ton of questions that we are left with and aren't answered in later games. The whole plot feels like it was made just to upset the fans and create even more questions that should've been answered in this game. It's clear something happened in development and it reeks of DLC that is gonna be sold to us at a later date. Don't get me wrong, the gameplay is absolutely astonishing and I'm sure it will be praised for many years to come, but fuck if I wasn't left feeling empty and depressed after I completed it. I guess you could say I have phantom pains :)

One more thing, Kojima said in an interview/Vid after release that he spent long and hard thinking about what the best way to go about the story and he hoped the fans would enjoy what he has created.

Was he taking the piss? Seriously?

Oh and there isn't an ending 4, it just a cutscene.

The more I play the more I realise that I am disappointed with TPP. I thought it was going to be completely different if I'm honest. I haven't quite finished it yet but the story is almost non-existent.
The gameplay is amazing though.
I feel like we could have had an amazing, more story heavy, sequel to TPP in the future if the whole Kojima and Konami thing didn't happen.
If Konami release another metal gear I will play it. They have a great gameplay template to build off of so at the very least a non Kojima sequel should be fun to play.
Also I really dislike Kiefer's voice acting. He sounds so boring and all his words kind of blur into one grumble.

I just realized I have never seen the option to remove Snake's shirt in this game. Has anyone seen that option anywhere? I know it exists, because I've seen screenshots of shirtless Snake walking around. But I can't find it.

Edit: Never mind. I dun goofed.

I decided to do a replay of the entire series to see how the shenanigans of Phantom Pain fit in. I started with 3 and it really is the only "missing link" needed to explain the "fall of Big Boss." I can kind of forgive MGSV.

Speaking of playing MGS3, I looove Para-medic. She is my favorite save codec, sorry Mei Ling. Para-medic and Snake have the best banter. Its only fitting she creates Solid, Liquid and Solidus. The Foxhound crew being the Patriots is kind of..ehhh. But Para-medic = Dr. Clark and Sigint = Donald Anderson connection is pretty cool. I appreciate how they don't hit you over the head with it in MGS3, the references are subtle.

Finished chapter 1. Is there a significant amout of story in chapter 2?

I popped into the spoiler thread (the original one, posts before release) and didn't see anything but I should probably stay out of there huh

Least favorite Metal Gear Solid title by far. Amazing gameplay, though, will play for a long time to come - on that alone. Here's hoping for MGO news.

After the mess RE: FOB prices etc I have no doubt MGO3 will be a micro-transaction laden utter mess, and given the consideration given to the main game, I genuinely believe it's not going to be what you want at all.

Not trying to be contrary but I'm not getting this complaint... and I'm hearing it a lot. Maybe it's the slow-pace I've been taking with it but I'm up to about Mission 20/21 (30% completion) and there has been a steady stream of cut-scenes, tapes, debriefings and story critical missions. The narrative certainly doesn't take up as much real-estate as MGS1-4, but it is hardly non-existent.

-------

I think the biggest difference between the story here and previous games (with the exception of how it is told) is the focus on the conspiracy over the characters. We rarely see anyone open up like Snake does about Meryl to Campbell or Raiden does to Rose regarding his past. The more I think about it though, the more this ties in with Kojima's proposed "show don't tell" policy. Whilst we don't get any major melodramatic heart to hearts, we do get character's reactions to situations which hint at their internal thinking.

Take Miller, right? at first glance, Miller is one-dimensional damaged goods. He shows an incredible lack of heart in a lot of matters compared to PW:Miller. He's angry, bitter and takes no shit; much more in line with how someone who would become known as 'Hellmaster' would be. It's a great transitional phase between PW:Miller and MG2/MGS:Miller. His character in TPP makes a lot of sense. At the same time, he has moments like
setting up the Child Soldier's quarters
and
his tape rants that sound suspiciously like MG1-era Big Boss
which complicate a one dimensional reading of him. There are no big monologues about what he's going through internally, no one waxing psychological about what's up with Miller, just actions and their effects.

That's what I'm getting at the moment anyway. Maybe I'm reading too much into it. Obviously, my thinking may change as I get further in.

Unrelated: At this point, I'm still certain that
Miller is the 'Man Who Sold the World'... but now I think he sold the world a villainous Big Boss!
Can't wait to dig deeper.

If it's possible, can you tell me what you think the trailers promised without spoiling anything specific?

- Camp Omega
- The one scene in africa where anything is burned from the nuclear trailer (i'm @ 75% on PC and 55% on PS4 and havent seen this so far...)
- not in trailers, but i want this: mission 51

Sorry, I meant more broadly. What is the trailer promising that it isn't delivering? Like, the downfall of Big Boss etc.

Revenge, Men becoming Demon and a few points more that would give a way too much.
Edit: Yes, your example definitely isn't happening here imo.

Ah okay. I've got some theories regarding the first two (there are a few hints in tapes and cutscenes that I think alludeto that sort of stuff), but I'd be shooting my load waaaaaaaaay too early considering that I haven't even finished it yet! :D Just done Mission 20/21, which was unreal.

Revenge is most defenitely happening, just not on all the targets we expected.

Agree with the Men becoming Demons. There's really only one evil character on Mother Base, and it's not who you expect. No downfall of the guy we all fought would have the biggest downfall in this story.

Did anyone look at the OST track names? It basically describes the scenario in which that specific music is played. One of the tracks is "Disarmament" (they made a typo and wrote disarment). That track must be the one that plays in the cutscene after you disarm all FOB nukes.

That being said, if you read the names of the tracks, you would know there is more we haven't scene yet.

Guys, I missed y'all. I am seriously loving this game.

Side note: Whilst disagreeing here and there I am overwhelmed with how cool this community continues to be. Between Shy, Brau, Screaming Meat, Batzi, and so many others y'all have made this thrill ride seriously thrilling. Fuck yes and thank you.

what was your strategy here?

I heard there was a "roof strategy" so I ran to the other side of the map and climbed up a set of stairs and started fighting them. There were two at once but I managed to CQC whenever they tried to jump slash and whittled them down with a high penetration sniper rifle.

It wasn't until I finished did I find out that people meant roof strategy by climbing up the hangar roof and picking them all off safely from there. Could've made it really easy for myself that way ._.'

I had given up on MGO, but I'll gladly take any more content related to MGSV as the gameplay is perfect.

You'll see once you finish Chapter 2. I thought the same thing at first. "There is plenty of narrative! Cassette tapes are well done - this was a good direction to go in. Oh, man, can't wait to see what new characters this game has in store. Feels like I'm just getting started!" Then Chapter Two happens and not only is it a flop - it makes the rest of the game feel like one as well. There are a ton of awesome moments in Chapter One, but if Chapter Two doesn't make you forget all about them then kudos to you. I don't know if its Kojima's fault or Konami's - nor do I really care. People found a hidden cutscene (which was confirmed to still be in), so I'm hoping that after I perform some PT-type puzzle-solving, Chapter 3 becomes available but yeah not gonna hold my breath.

after 47% completion... around 50 hrs... the itch to play Mad Max is strong haha.

Some of these missions in chapter 2 are just plain dumb. Also... Code Talker is a pleb. I wish i had not rescued him.

This game is a good example how too much terrain is not a good idea. I spent more time running around tyring to get to places, than actually doing a mission. Even with a jeep. There is just NOTHING to do in between.

Didn't Kojima play RDR or GTAV? with the random encounters? This game needs more random encounters. The only thing random right now are the cutscenes i trigger every time i got back to motherbase. All of them seem to be random and just plain weird.

Also, watched the cutscene with
Quiet in the Rain
. I am ashamed of Kojimas words and deeds.

No.

I do enjoy the
whopper
talks tho! Code Talker knows a good burger i guess.
Even tho he doesn't need to eat and he is Navajo.
O_O

I seriously felt offended by that, fuck you Kojima for that bullshit.

Yeah, I would've like a dynamic world, no Mujahaden fighting back the sovjets. I basically do 2-3 Side-Ops that are close and then back to the chopper, lol.
