Metal Gear Solid is the best game this year.

I went to WAGs boutique and all I got was a sniff
Who can give a good reason to this being wrong. This game has completely blown me away. Since I'm a huge MGS fan, I was holding this game to very high standars, but I completely underrated it. Konami have put in so much effort to make this game the best one their is. This year, MGS3 is in a league of its own compared to any other game. Not even Halo 2 comes close. everyhting about the game is perfect, however the story was better in MGS2.

My only problem with MGS3 is that it left me with some questions. I've actually never seen this before, but many people have said that Kojima intended to make MGS a trilogy, so would this seriously be the last one or could the game be made under a different title?

Currently, ive been playing the game again for the second time. I never thought about this the first time I played the game but was EVA given instructions by Volgin to go and do something when she first meets snake or did she meet snake without anyone at Groznyj Grad or anyone working with Volgin knowing?

I disagree. Admittedly, I haven't played it much, and I am NOT a fan of the MGS series (MGS and MGS TTS were somewhat enjoyable, MGS2 was a pathetic joke). I've got the third one, put more time into the demo than anything, and it certainly introduced some rather neat features, but the cumbersome controls, and same-same feel to it certainly prevent it from being my GotY. Not even close.

To its credit, it does seem to be MUCH better than MGS2, so that is great news. Sadly, I won't have time to really give it any attention until early next year.

discussion finshed, close thread now.

I advice you to finish the game, then agree or disagree. I found the demo underwhelming, but the full game amazing (after the demo part). I don't expect the game to become your GOTY, but it does get a lot better the further into the game you get.

I believe it. I actually liked the demo a lot more than my hardcore MGS-fiend of a friend. He LOATHED it. Actually. I liked the lack of a radar, the whole camo thing. I'm still feeling a bit snubbed by MGS2, as it's only been a few months since I first played and beat it. And if I didn't have a crapload of other games that I purchased these past few weeks that I'm interested in playing first, I'd be playing MGS3 right now. It's been a crazy November Rush, and MGS3 was one of my "insta-shelved" titles added to the backlog.

I realize I spoke too soon, but since the thread didn't really ask about the game's overall quality, just about it's standing as GotY, I figured I'd post my $.02 on why it can't be my GotY.

If there's one franchise in the history of gaming that should hit the big screen it should be the MGS series.

I wasn't really hyped for MGS3 until I read the praises/hype from the official MGS3 thread. I purchased it last week and I can truly say MGS 3 is at least a GOTY contender.

I'm starting to think I should buy a PS2 just for MGS3, MGS2, and GTA:SA :/

...

And an XBox for Halo 2, Halo and Ninja Gaiden.

Damn these people know how to get my money :(

Oxymoron much?

Seriously, everything I've read has been "if you like the series, you'll love the game" and vice versa. Personally, I think it's mediocre, but then again, I don't like stealth games. Plus, despite them reducing the overall quantity, the loooooooong periods of un-interactive "gameplay" are just boring. I'll take immersive half-life 2-style content over that any day of the week.

Sorry if I seemed harsh, but it's easy to think that the "first" part of MGS3 represent how the full game will be. Hell, I felt the same way and I've seen a substantial number of people who thought like that too. But it picks up, it definitely picks up.
But hey, if you liked the demo, there's a very big chance you'll like the rest of the game even more. :)

Then why are you playing Metal Gear Solid?

Why not? I figure if a game gets rave reviews (like MGS3 did), I should at least give it a try. It's not like I bought it or anything.

Did you even get to Operation Snake Eater before coming up with the conclusion that it has long segments without you playing?

I would dissagree purely in the gameplay department! I can't stand how slow paced the MGS games are, and MGS3 is no different! It is the most cinematic though!

I can't believe people still use the no gameplay all codec/cut scene arguement still :lol

It's easy to seperate the people who've played MGS3 and those who haven't.

I'd say my GotY. And that's after playing GTA:SA, Half-Life 2, Katamari, DQVIII (which might be runner-up), WE8 and some others.

Way way way toooo much corn but a good MGS game. Hideo takes his movie and military geekdom way too far, he is perve too. Feels like half of the game was just a huge joke for him. Meh, I just wish MGS tried to be serious.

IAWTP. plus the plain and simple 'gameplay' is tits.

One of the big appeals of the game is that its a military game that doesn't take itself completely serious. It's having fun with the idea.

right. I also disagree with the guy you quoted. I enjoy seeing all the details in MGS3, and the series itself, that allude to all the influences that brought the game(s) to fruition: sure, the military, but also, the afterlife, the supernatural, the elements (fire, earth, water) the many cinematic influences, politics, sexual themes, human nature, betrayal, so many things to name. It sure isn't just a 'corny military game'.

Who should play Snake?

David Hayter. Good make-up artists could make him look more...rugged.

Well in general, I disagree with a Metal Gear movie though. But if had to happen, my vote goes to Hayter.

Michael Biehn

Not sure what he looks like nowadays, last thing I remember from him was The Rock. Might have just the right rugged look for the role. Slap a mullet on him and he'd be good to go. Good choice.

Ah, yeah, You are right.

to play Snake:

too bad Clint Eastwood wasn't in his early 30's in this day and age :(

same things with Dennis Quaid, if only he was a bit younger..

Hugh Jackman could work, with the right dress-up and if acted right.

and have Ben Stiller for the comedic Snake moments..
;)

Haven't seen so much masturbating over a game this year since Katamari. :p

The game is definately good, but I have a hard time gushing over it like most of the GA crew. Cinematics have been awesome (ridiculous and over the top, but always cool), but they were awesome in the other Metal Gears and nothing seems really much better or worse. Visuals are nice, but owning all consoles I've seen plenty of nice visuals and nothing blows me away there either.

Gameplay-wise the camo stuff was straightforward (I'm in grass, better switch to a leaf camo...now it's night, better switch to a night camo) but a nice twist and helped create immersion. The cure stuff was unnecessary. The food/stamina was more interesting, as it put a collection gimmick in the game that doesn't feel meaningless, and doesn't get tiresome because it's so easy to find.

Forest setting was a GREAT idea, and introduced a few new ways to get past guards. But I still find the straight up stealth portions more fun in other games with camera systems that allow you to see right in front of you as you move forward (which happens to be a camera system that is in every single other stealth game out there). The camera in this game seems unnecessarilly forced on you, as if it's only reason for existing was to keep it looking like past Metal Gears. The battery powered radar system is much better than what existed in past metal gears though. CQC is fun, but it just seems to allow me to grab dudes in the heat of combat without sneaking...I've seen that before.

They fixed the pacing of codecs and cut scenes after the intro segment, but IMO this was a mandatory fix cuz it was such a pain in MGS2. Nothing brilliant here.

Boss battles were cool...but boss battles are always cool in the other Metal Gears too. I haven't seen anything here that is making me break out the gloves and vaseline. I'm still fighting The End though, and I know I still have a few to go. Everyone keeps hyping the end sequence, so maybe my mind will change when it's finished

Again, I'm having fun...but GOTY? Best Game Ever? Just don't get it

Fourth best ending to a game ever!

04) MGS3
03) ICO (I love tragic endings)
02) FFVII (Others absolutely hate this ending, I thought it was perfect, this will probabaly drop out of my top 10 once I see AC though)
01) FFX (Same as number 3, and I actually liked the characters)

ADD much?

Half-Life 2 is a great game, can't say anything about that, except that it's not the same type of game and can't really be compared.

It's the best console game released this year. That is not up for debate. From the story to the perfected gameplay, it is everything Kojima has sought to realize on a platform that would afford him a wide enough canvas to do so.

Kojima has stated that the MG series would continue.

Overall GOTY is Half-Life 2, though.

That score couldn't have been worse. they gave the graphics a 9. jak II somehow got a higher graphic score. It just goes to show how well gamepot review.

As for anyone who hasn't gone past Virtuous mission yet, don't judge the game. it takles time to get used to and you will get so much gameplay later on.

Can someone just anwer this question though?

Was EVA given instructions by Volgin to go and do something when she first meets snake or did she meet snake without anyone at Groznyj Grad or anyone working with Volgin knowing?

I just finished the game yesterday and I have to say it will be hard for me to pick between GTA San Andreas and MGS3 for my GOTY. The only thing I found weird was the frequency of the bosses. I do not feel like they were spread out. I also did not like having to fight guards right before the final boss. It got to be annoying since a certain someone always got stuck shooting at them and I was near the end of the area.

I ranking was crocodile. I wonder what the best rank is?

Those are good arguments. MGS would be a joke if it took itself seriously-- what's so fun about Kojima is that he'll do whatever he wants if it means the game will be more entertaining. For instance the camouflage, kojima doesn't have a problem with you just simply going into a menu and clicking once to change it--there's little sacrifice for the sake of realism. Also, his weird quirks he puts in the game like spinning around to throw up, or the little green stuffed frogs hidden everywhere (hilarious contrast to the game's setting). It's little things like that along with the bewildering amount of ways to take on each situation that make the game so great.

Also, it's disapointing to see so many people complain about the slow-pace gameplay and time-consuming cinematics. Since when do games need to conform to the title of being just games? Haven't we moved past pong and pacman long ago? It's time to just accept "games" as interactive experiences that can be whatever they want to be. I'd hate to see creative guys like Kojima held back because of people's need for instant-gratification.

I thought the same sometime, about the boss spread, but then I figured that Kojima intended for the bosses to appear at unpredicatable times in thegame/story, maybe..

Well thought-out and honest impressions (I disagree on your camera points though, wait till you complete the game). That said, you still have what most are saying is the BETTER half of the game ahead of you. come back after that, then and share. I will be curious of your imressions :)

personally, i get enough realistic military action every time I turn on the news or read a letter from my homeys. I think the world needs a little LESS military realism, if you ask me.

It's my GOTY, but I haven't played enough of the other games to really say it should be everyones GOTY. I don't like the GTA series, and all my PC FPS-nut friends are saying that HL2 is overrated, so that naturally hasn't made it's way onto my playlist yet either.

Regardless of how everyone else sees it, the game is amazing and I think will have more staying power than games like HL2 or Halo 2. Once a new, extraordinary FPS comes along, everyone will forget about Halo 2 or HL2, but because of such a strong story and such, it's far less simple to just dismiss MGS3. Just my personal opinions, though. It's like Chrono Trigger, the first MGS, Mario, etc... you can pick all of these up in five years and they're still going to be just as awesome as they were the first time you played them. I really think MGS3 lands in this category.
