Metal Gear Solid V announced (PS360, open world)

Is this game even confirmed for PC? I keep reading this in lots of previews, people on GAF say it sometimes, and even the wiki page lists Windows. If it does indeed come to PC, I guess I don't care that it's not cross-gen any more.

Can someone explain to me Big Boss being burned and reconstructed from Solidus?

Surely we aren't talking about him being burned in MG1, right? He would have had to be reconstructed again in order to show up in MG2, correct? How could he have been reconstructed that fast from Solidus' parts, when Solidus is perfectly fine in MGS2, only shown to be hacked to bits in MGS4?

He was put into a coma by Zero after Solid Snake burned him to death with an aerosol can and a lighter in Metal Gear 2. Then, Ocelot and Eva had him reconstructed with the parts of Solidus and Liquid.

I doubt it.
That guy is dead
maybe.

But they look similar!

We've already seen someone who probably is a kid Psycho Mantis. Theres a dude with a mask who seems to be a shape-shifter and could be Decoy Octopus. I don't think its a stretch to think that Sniper Wolf and Vulcan Raven or people related to them could show up in this game.

So why would he be dressed just like Ocelot?

Apart from the white hair, he doesn't even look particularly old. He looks like a cross between his appearances in 3 and 1.

(Using Twin Snakes because it's a better choice for comparison than the blurry PS1 original or Shinkawa's artwork.

It just doesn't look like him. The PP man's face doesn't even have the same bone structure. His face is not oval enough.

Here's more images of him.

Just looking at the Gamesradar MGS timeline that was linked earlier and its got me wondering if we're looking at things in the wrong order. According to that BB was in a coma before Peace Walker, so the link can't be Mother Base being taken down leading to the the hospital and coma. Of course, I could be all wrong on this as it was written in 2010 so could have been retconned since, I've not finished PW yet and its not an official timeline, but I think I'm going to have a look at the MGS encyclopaedia on the PS3 when I get home tonight.

Also Sunny had got younger since MGR to MGS4, epic fail!
they have MGR set before MGS4, do they even play the games?

In MG1, he's mostly human (MGS5 now suggests that he had a cyborg arm during MG1 at the very least).

In MG2 (according to the MGS DB) he was a Snatcher (similar to Raiden in MGS4), mostly cyborg.

In MGS4 he's mostly human again, after being rebuilt from Solidus and Liquid.

I agree his facial structure looks off, but between the hair, stache, and way he dresses, I think it's definitely meant to be Ocelot.

That's what scares me. I don't want them to change his face. The jump between the MGS1 character models and MGS2's doesn't count, since the PSone was so limited in power, but ever since MGS2, all returning characters looked like themselves. When we saw Snake in MGS4, everybody went "yup, that is totally Snake". Nobody was confused by his new look. It was natural. Hell, even Meryl looked like herself in MGS4, and she came directly from the first game.

Not convinced its Ocelot. I think it could be Sniper Wolf's dad.

be convinced. there's too many signs. If he's not Ocelot i'm calling it quits at this point on this game. I'll read the 50.000 word wikipedia article about it... because it would have gone too hard into mindfucking people for no reason.

They didn't change his facial bone structure that much from MGS3 ocelot. It seems that from this point on, he begun to get skinny on the face. He has a bit more nose than usual and not as stylized... but then again they are aiming for a more realist approach now.

Note how his upper lip is similar in terms of positioning.

checking how the shadows appear on his face, we can assume he has very similar cheekbones to his mgs3 counterpart, and starting ot develop some wrinkles that allow us to see some similarities with old ocelot.

That timeline was correct when it was published. MGS:R was supposed to take place between MGS2 and MGS4. MGS:R ended up being cancelled. MGR is a completely different game/story that is set after MGS4.

Honestly I love the hell out of Kojima for never revealing anything clearly upfront and leaving the gamers guessing till the game comes out. Hell I wouldn't be surprised if we play as someone other than Big Boss for half the game.

And I have a feeling this'll be a huge improvement over MGS4. His second game on the same platform always ends up being better. MGS3>MGS2 ZOE2>ZOE1 MGS5>MGS4

I've been thinking about that. I guess its possible for another playable character while BB is in a coma.

Considering you thought Joakim was cg....
They look similiar how? They have a head a face and a shoulder?

I doubt it's Coldman. It has to be someone that really really wants to have his revenge.

During the conference when they were showing off the photoscanning technology, they mentioned that the character they were modeling in the example was someone who was over 100 years old, and so they had to use special make up effects on the clay mold of the head before scanning it for use in the game. They didn't want to show the final head because they weren't ready to reveal the design. Since there's no clear frontal shot of the guy's face in the Ground Zeroes trailer either, could that be the character? Who would be over 100 years old and relevant to the MGS mythos in the 1970s?

It's The End's father.

But really I don't think that guy fits his look, and I doubt they'd have made such a secret of it if it was XOF guy.

It has to be Coldman. He's wearing a suit and takes off a hat that looks just like this one:

So Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain are different games.

Not bad, I'd rather get GZ this year and PP next year for PS4.

Btw, regarding the duality in the theme of MGSV so far in every fucking trailer, I really feel that if there's one thing Kojima established in the Big Boss saga so far, it's that the "other side" of Big Boss is Major Zero. It always has been. Peace Walker and MGS4 reinforced that a lot.

So, MGSV. It just dawned on me again. Kojima will never do anything but Metal Gear, and we are the problem :( Should flop so Kojima does something different for a change.

There aren't really enough people out there to qualify a group of "haters" existing, and it does kind of make sense, because his voice does change eventually between this point and MGS4. There's no better time to switch his voice over to an older voice than after a 9 year coma and the beginning of the Solid Snake era.

We don't know the story yet, though. But yeah, I'm gonna miss Hayter if he's gone.

I'm basing this off the original GZ trailer. Which takes place days, weeks, or months after Peace Walker. Doesn't make sense to change his voice in that period of time.

I would totally be fine with a slightly different voice for TPP. But 1. BB doesn't look aged at all. 2. the new voice sounds young too.

He was around 39 for PW so that means he should be 47-48 for TPP. IDK something doesn't seem right. The only reason why I accepted his voice change in MGS4 was because it wasn't his body. So naturally his voice should be Hayter up until that point.

Guess we'll see how this plays out. But if Hayter isn't on the final product I'll be deeply disappointed.

hmm they are the same game no?

http://www.joystiq.com/2013/03/27/ground-zeroes-is-the-prologue-portion-of-metal-gear-solid-5/

"'Ground Zeroes' is a prologue of MGSV," Kojima said. "9 years after that event will be 'The Phantom Pain.'" Metal Gear Solid 5 comprises these two parts, much like Metal Gear Solid 2 opened with the Tanker chapter, then moved onto the Plant portion starring Raiden. "The game play demo I presented today is the opening of [The Phantom Pain] which is tutorial that starts from crawling." [Update: Contrary to what Kojima said during the GDC panel today, Konami has confirmed with Joystiq that Metal Gear Solid: Ground Zeroes and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain are indeed separate games.]

I think it makes perfect sense. Ground Zeroes for this year on PS3/X360 (and maybe PC), and next year Phantom Pain for next-gen consoles.

Then again, this could be miscommunication between KCEJ/KojiPro and Konami America.

Now this is awesome! However the current graphics of Ground zeroes and Phantom Pain, are to good to be on PS3/360 dont you think?

but I am expecting a lot more for PS4 than what we are getting in these early looks... but it still looks beyond what PS3/360 can handle..

Perhaps someone with some more medical knowledge than my own, which is almost zero, could answer something. Isn't it a little odd they announce Big Boss is in coma only seconds after resuscitating him?

I've been thinking about that. I guess its possible for another playable character while BB is in a coma.

What if we played as Big Boss AND Solid Snake? Maybe one game is Solid's game while the other is Big Boss's game. Sorta giving both perspectives. Or switch back and forth between them. This is a wild guess though.

One of the founding members of The Philosophers. The Boss' father. I'm calling it.

Man... why do game developers refrain from modeling genitals on animals ? Is it still so frowned upon ? It's a goddamn penis. Who the fuck cares ?

I could ask you why are so sexist...

So regarding the discussion about how Ishmael exists only in BB's mind:

How about he's a manifestation of young Psycho Mantis to guide BB out of the hospital? The attack is real and PM&Ocelot work together to get him out.

In the car crash scene you can't see who's on the driver's side (though BB has the hand on the wheel), but I would guess it's Ishmael. Directly after the crash, only BB crawls out of the car and immediately meets Psycho Mantis (who doesn't need to project Ishmael into BB's mind anymore).

It's hard to guess if the helicopter is with PM or not. He waves at it, but it seems directly after that the helicopter is swallowed by the fire whale. Which I think is also actually happening, the fire from the burning hospital gets morphed into that shape to destroy the helicopter. If PM is friendly at that point, it's to pick them up. Failing that, Ocelot jumps in to give BB a lift.

That would mean that fire-guy (who shows powers like The Fury) is not PM. PM has a history of burning down his whole village, but he usually isn't using fire as his main power. Fire-guy is only seen as that flaming figure, transforming into explosions, a whale and a rider. However, if he's with the enemy squad, it's strange that he doesn't finish BB off after the elevator explosion (while later you can see a chase in which you have to shoot him).

I'm going to say some unpopular things now.

First of all, I think the latest trailer was a hodge podge of stuff with no focus. While the Ground Zeroes and Phantom Pain tarikers had a clear narrative arc, purpose and they built a superb ambience, the MGS V trailer was just a mess of new and old clips with some ppt quality typography cut into a Cardigans track.

Second, the graphics are pretty disappointing. After seeing all the next gen stuff and recent PC games, I find it disappointing that so much of this trailer looked underwhelming. Surely they could have bumped up things a bit, done a high spec build that run on a Titan and would come to PS4 and use that for their assets. I really want a next gen MGS, to be blown away like MGS4 blew me away.

Third, I felt the much panned BF4 reveal was much more engaging. The graphics were spectacular, the narrative was interesting, the ambience was intriguing, I wanted to jump right in. Clearly MGS will end up with another league of a story and setting, but the trailer failed to grip me, which is especially damning given the absolutely obscene amount of settings, characters, assets and events they baked in - at it's current form the trailer manages to excite mainly the types of people who analyze every frame, contemplate on conspiracies etc.

That's all.

So you'd prefer more dubstep and shootbang. Good for you.

Don't stop running. :P

The short gameplay demo was amazing to me. The atmosphere was really gripping. I rarely feel that way when watching a game. I think Kojima is a master at it.
