Metal Gear Solid V E3 2015 Trailer

vO2ZMo.gif

Is Skullface an hallucination?

There is no David Hayter in the trailer.

"I was born in a small village. I was still a child when we were raided by soldiers - foreign soldiers. Torn from my elders I was made to speak their language. With each new post my masters changed along with the words they made me speak. With each change - I changed too. My thoughts, personality, How I saw right and wrong... Words Can Kill." - Skullface

"Time and again the country was ruled by a foreign tongue. When he was a young boy he lost his native language. The bedrock for any developing child. His country, His family, His face - His identity. Everything was stolen from him." - Ocelot

"Since ancient times every civilizations ruler has had the same idea. When people unite under one will - they become stronger than the sums of their parts. And what do rulers use to bring people together? Language." - CodeTalker

"This world will become one - I have found the way. Race, Tribal affiliations, National borders. Even our faces will be irrelevant. The world that The Boss envisioned will finally become a reality. And it will make mankind whole again..." - Zero

"America is a country of ;liberty. A meeting of immigrants. Instead of simply assimilating its citizens live alongside others. So the major sought a system that used information: Words - To control the subconscious." - Skullface

"In his eyes the greatest symbiotic parasite the worlds ever known isn't microbial - it's linguistic. Words are what keep civilization, our world - alive. Free the world, Not by taking mens lives. But by taking their tongues." - Ocelot

"With this i'll rid the world of infestation. Sans Lingua Franca - The world will be torn asunder, And then it shall be free." - Skullface

"The chain of retaliation is what will truly bind this world together as one" - Skullface

"*Les Enfants Terrible* Zero called it" - Big Boss

This is a great post.

That is 100% Zero talking about the Boss and making the world one again. I wonder if it'll just be him on a cassette tape though?

Yeah, it sounds like a found tape. Ocelot's dialogue sounds like a briefing file on Skullface. Skullface and Code Talker sound like they could be in a cutscene though.

One of the things that makes this trailer so good is because it's special. It's not like all the other E3 stuff. This trailer has heart.

I was watching the trailer 5 times more before going to bed and the music man, the music is sooo haunting I couldn't stop thinking about "With each change - I changed too." and always that creepy, same-ish music *ding* *ding* *ding*

Absolutely brilliant.

The plot of this game looks so awesomely convoluted. Wasn't expecting the mammal pod to show up... Or Paz for that matter, wtf? Seriously, what.

Really cool trailer, the melancholy tone was great.

After he dies, yeah. He's definitely real to begin with. In GZ, guards talk about him and there are multiple recordings of his voice.

I haven't been following this thread in detail, so I apologize if it's been mentioned before, but the player experiences the story through the eyes (and ears) of Big Boss, and even though some of the situations seem impossible for one person to be in two places at once (Skull Face talking to Chico while Big Boss just entered the area or Skull Face erasing the XOF logo and boarding the chopper while Big Boss rescues Paz), do you ever hear anyone really address the existence of Skull Face, except for the player's viewing of cutscenes and listening to tapes? Remember, even in Ground Zeroes, Skull Face uses exact Big Boss phrases when talking to Chico.

I know Skull Face dying at one point seems logical (although it's not really implied anywhere right?), but I'm really feeling a theme of lost identities, hallucinations and questioning what's real, both from the point of view of Big Boss but also from the player. The way the game is delivering information, perhaps by deception or leaving it up to interpretation (depending on how mindfucking the direction will be in the game), it might be an important theme throughout the story, that the player's and Big Boss' warped experience of seeing impossible things poses questions on whether if the entire game is real or not, is what Kojima is telling us through the narrative real and we should believe him, or is the game itself a fantasy, a practical example of Zero's idea of uniting the world through erasing its diversity, languages and differences, faces will not even matter so weather the protagonist wears a Big Boss of Skull Face face is irrelevant. It's very 1984, the way the government frequently reduces the official dictionary to have as few words as possible, to be functional and not have redundant words that would encourage free thought or ideas of freedom and liberty. Skull Face literally says that Zero's idea uses words to control the person's subconscious.

Skull Face is the embodiment of Big Boss' struggle against Zero's unstoppable philosophy, a struggle of his lost identity that was taken from him, the phantom that he created to rid himself of Zero's shackles. Skull Face's agenda is the direct opposite of Zero's, to free the world through retaliation and conflict, which will in the end become the sole driving force of Big Boss, why he establishes Outer Heaven and why he's a "bad buy" in MG1 and 2.

This way, you could potentially have a narrative that shows historical events in the game's universe (what Big Boss actually lived through) as well as using the story itself as a more abstract and impossible construct to warp the player's perception of what the story is, just to prove a point. Big Boss and Skull Face could be the same exact person but what we see in the game through gameplay and cutscenes is a nightmarish interpretation of the transpired events that in turn tell a story of an internal mental struggle of core philosophical issues of a man. It's not just the hospital intro section that's a nightmarish paranoia induced hallucination, it's the entire game. But even if the hospital section is a hallucination, Big Boss did actually wake up and drag himself out of a hospital. The historical accuracy of the transpired events are not only irrelevant but, by Zero's philosophy, entirely open to interpretation, to the point of not even happening at all.

Ground Zeroes even shows these little beginning bits of insanity, like the medic with Sutherland's voice.

And the actual reality of the events doesn't help poor Big Boss' troubled mind one bit, with giant mechs, cloned people and a man bent on destructively changing the world by making you the most important person. It's like a paranoid schizophrenic's worst nightmare.

One theory I have is that Zero finds the beginning of SOP in Africa and it involves mind control. That would explain the scene with codetalker who could either be trying to get Snake out of the mind control or getting him to relive experiences. I also don't believe that SkullFace is real. If Zero has found something akin to SOP SkullFace could just be used to drive Big Boss absolutely crazy. That psycho mantis kid could also be posessibg people which would explain Millers eyes looking like codetalkers.

Edit:Remember the patriots did create the whole LA Le Lu lei lo thingy.

You know, there's something to this. I think it's very clear that Ishmael is also a construct of Big Boss, used to get him through some difficult situations. It clear that a lot of the game will deal with illusions and seeing what isn't really there. (thanks to Psycho Mantis)

It could be possible that Big Boss is having his mind manipulated by Zero or someone to do horrible acts.

Much like how Solid Snake was framed for the Tanker incident in MGS2.

The long trailer looks visually inconsistent : a mix of finished and unfinished graphics.

Could also be a case of visual inconsistency due to it being a mix of realtime cutscene material with and without post-FX.

The shorter second trailer looks consistent at least, but I feel this game might choke on
its own plot-related complexities.

Probably already mentioned, but that female design everyone was complaining about, this shows it has a gameplay function, eh? Seems like she can camouflage her skin, which clothing would impede.

Oh god I really hope we get to see this too.

But it wouldn't make any sense not to post it later online since it looks like this isn't behind closed doors.

Are people missing that Scarface is a phantom when he has the phantom mask on? Whenever he appears without a mask on, he's real and there in flesh (a villain opposite Zero). When he has the mask on, Snake's imagining him. He's a spectre, a ghost, a phantom.

If the
twin snakes
are blonde in this game it's a complete retcon. There's nothing to even suggest snake dyes his hair in mgs1 other than the briefing, which is monochrome could look blonde from the interrogation lights. He asks for scissors to cut his hair but he never asks for any hair dye.
.

I'm pretty sure it's mentioned verbally in the MGS1 briefing. Something like 'you dyed your hair?!' It's not a visual thing, I'm pretty sure someone actually says it.

I have a portion of my degree based on Aboriginal Studies. I recall one of my early meetings with an Iroquois Elder where he spoke about how the language can take us back, it's a ladder that allows us to climb to the past. So much cultural identity is woven in the language. This resonated heavily with me in this trailer. Can't wait to download the high res version when I get off work in a few hours.

Brilliant stuff. I've also got a degree in English Literature and Linguistics, and I love all the stuff in this knew trailer.

It's all really accurate to contemporary philosophy and scientific linguistics and wider cultural ramblings about language. Everything around us only exists because of language. It's the programming of our reality.

word? i kid, i kid =)

regarding that giant left hand possibly holding Boss (?) upside down, how did Grey Fox die/get captured/injured in the original Metal gear?

I thought that was it, but I'm not sure, there's that part where he arrives by helicopter in the shorter trailer. But I guess the whole helicopter and his guards could be imaginary too, no reason why not from what is shown. How does he have access to the Metal Gear base and a transport to it? Something is missing.

No it's not. Somehow this has become a widespread meme even when it can be disproven simply by watching the briefing.

Don't know if this came out already, but the name of the song is 'Elegy'.

"In English literature, an elegy is a mournful, melancholic or plaintive poem, especially a funeral song or a lament for the dead."

Really goes well with the themes of the trailer (and game).

Haha, well spotted!

Was writing that with my editor-in-chief walking around the room so my brain was only half paying attention :P

I don't know, Horse. I DON'T KNOW, OKAY?

GUYS I'VE NEVER PLAYED A METAL GEAR GAME BESIDES GROUND ZEROES.

Not much made sense but it looked awesome.

Someone point me in the direction of a good recap for the series? I'm never going to have time to play through the games.

Nah, I won't. I will however tell you that only MGS3 and Peace Walker take place before GZ and MGSV (And Portable Ops but you can safely ignore that game.) in all the other games that take place way after MGSV you actually play this protagonist's son, so for the bare essentials to get MGSV's story you're probably fine with just those two games. I'm sure you can make time for that, it's worth it.

MGS3 and Peace Walker!
