I've stopped restarting every time I sound an alarm.

There is such an huge angle of the game that is not being fully played by the players (Improvising, combat, evasion).

I used to play the old Metal Gears like this, and it was amazing. And now after I stopped caring going for Pure stealth (I did that in a few missions, it was frustrating and I still didn't get an S)

It's so much fun now trying to escape when something goes wrong.

Sometimes the best thing that can happen is that you fuck up a stealthy intrude.

When you improvise with some tense gunplay, fulfill your goals, and escape with the prize anyway? Those are the best memories of all.

Can someone explain dispatch missions to me? It keeps saying I have insufficient staff even though I have 7 people on the staff.

I think you need a team of 10 people to send them on a mission, and even then you can only send out two teams at time. Apparently that number increases with each FOB built.

When do you unlock Customize Weapons? I'm at like mission 40. Did I miss it?

There's a string of side ops about
legendary gun smiths
. If you extracted every person of interest up to now you should have it.

edit: thoroughly beaten

I'm really struggling with Mission 8 Occupation Forces.
I'm just getting boned by the tanks every time. I found a tank I can steal but even then I'm just outnumbered by them and end up getting blown to bits, my hand held rocket launcher seems to be pretty ineffective as it is too.
Haven't had this much trouble with a mission yet, I fucking hate tanks.

Lol at people freaking out over an obvious shop.

Very minor action strategy spoilers ahead.

Is that the one with
the loads of tanks coming in from different angles at different times in the West of Afghanistan?

I'd advise:

Use two claymore mines and a C4 in the road they're coming in on. You can see their route on the iDroid map.

Wait for them to drive over the C4 and detonate it. This will detonate the claymore mines too and hopefully kill it in one go.

If that doesn't kill it, then make sure you're rocketing the tanks in the back. Tanks have weak back armour. If you're shooting them in the front/side you'll have to use 3x as many rockets.

Also at some point a truck will come through with a super-powered rocket launcher in the back. Shoot the drivers (or sneak on the back), steal the launcher, and that thing will OHKO any tank.

Edit: also, IIRC that mission is optional so you can always skip it and come back with a better
rocket launcher
in a couple of hours :)

Completed 40 side ops and no sign of a
legendary gunsmith (don't really see how that's a spoiler?)
one yet. Must be a completion order to unlock it.

YESSS! Fuck this mission hard. Got max points via bonus lol.

What is useful for to use the other soldiers on missions?

I found it a big annoyance that you pretty much keep that character until you revert it yourself and everyone around the base treats you as the even tho you blalantly not.

I guess nothing other than experiencing their unique abilities really.

ther are usually 10 people sent out as a team, so get more staff

Thanks, can you guys explain why I was allowed to dispatch them on a medical assistance mission? Im pretty sure I had less then 10 members

Yeah, I thought I'd be happiest with Quiet once I unlocked her, but no, DD all the way man.

He sniffs everything out. Including weapons, containers, herbs, guards, prisoners. More consistently and quickly than quiet, too. And he crawls alongside you like a badass. He is, however, nowhere near as useful as Quiet when it comes to combat. Especially because you can tell Quiet where to sit around a base, start her shooting guys, and sneak in from the other direction.

One of my favourite parts of this game is just being able to go on missions with a dog like that. Only really Dead to Rights that also has such a cool dog companion like this game.

He's especially bad ass when he gets the knife attachment, he's gotten me out of a few pickles when I was about to be discovered by the enemy. He's simply put one of the best companions in any game ever, for me. Love that damned dog.

I probably need to stop this, but I love not getting seen too much. I don't care about my rank but not being seen is my rush.

I love going through missions without even touching an enemy. No kills, no tranq's, no holdups, no cqc. Love it. I'm not very good at it and it requires multiple retries.

Yeah it's such a rewarding experience. But believe me, managing to correct a fuckup is even more satisfying.

Even if it involves killing everyone, GTA style when 5 starred.
Feels like a Movie

I can't really choose between the two as Quiet's scouting ability is pretty great too. She's not as accurate as DD and is kind of useless for buildings but her covering fire more than makes up for it.
Both are awesome and can shape different infiltration styles.

Does anyone have any tips for Mission 16? I finished it last night, but I'm thinking ahead to when I go back for S Ranks. The ending seemed ridiculously difficult.

I heard some barks when I start to leaving the open field on the helicopter and then ocelot told me about the dog but we already flying so... I lost the dog forever?

On a side topic re the Chico/Quiet thing, medium-sized story spoilers ahead:

Did anyone else find it kind of shocking that Chico is dead? He died in the chopper crash, but nobody fucking cares, basically? Even in the tape where Ocelot is telling Snake all about what happened after Ground Zeroes, and he's like 'Here's the tough stuff, the bad news,' he never says '... And Chico is dead.'

In fact, Chico is never even mentioned until the 'What happened to Mother Base members after 1974' when suddenly it's like 'Oh yeah, he died.'

If he's not actually dead, please do not tell me that.

Slightly more major spoilers:

Yet they retcon Paz's death without blinking an eye. I wish Chico was alive. I'd loved to have seen him as a young adult, now a legendary fighter.

Does the knife attack count as a kill, yeah? I have that but haven't developed it yet. I think I'd rather wait for the Stun Knife so he doesn't outright kill people. Same with Quiet's silenced tranq sniper option. My god I will rule with that when I unlock it.

It is really novel though yeah, and he works amazing. Also ties to MGS1 and Solid Snake's love for huskies.

Use the Dwalker. I'm on mobile atm so can't link my easy s rank run through.

Ah yeah, that's a plan. Annoying though as I'm on a totally no-kill run in my game. Gonna try to see if there are any non-lethal upgrades for D-Walker. Thanks for the tip!

Mission 16 did anybody try blocking the road so the convoy stops then sneaking up on the truck and fulton it out? That's what I did and it worked perfectly.

Then you just run away and you're clear. No need to even battle.

Post mission 11

Went back to mother base to check in on Quiet and she... wasn't in her cell. NVG and sonar turned up nothing and Miller wasn't freaking out, so... I went to go visit the second floor of the med wing and came back and she was back.

Guess she just wanders off and comes back once in a while

I think I got an S-rank on it last night actually. Two tries on the last bit.

What I did was:

> get to the airport
> wait for the truck to leave
> accidentally Fulton my jeep, have to peg it after the convoy
> when the convoy stops at the first village and the driver gets out, hide on the cliff overlooking the village
> tell Quiet to start shooting people from the vantage point to the East (you could probably skip this by planting an explosive over there before you find the convoy, as a distraction)
> dive off the cliff and start crawling towards the truck while all the guards are looking the wrong way
> when you get close to the convoy, the Skulls will leap out
> all the soldiers are now zombies and have abandoned their vehicles
> get into one of their tanks or BMPs
> reverse away while shooting the Skulls with your main canon (they will periodically chase after you and jump on your vehicle to damage it)
> Quiet is useful here because she does decent damage sniping the Skulls, too
> do this until all the Skulls are dead, but if they damage your first tank/BMP too much, drive over to the other one and swap into that, then keep blasting em
> when all Skulls are dead, Fulton the truck and the tanks, and run across the line out of the hotzone

I reckon, for even quicker extraction, you could probably drive the truck next to a building, jump onto the truck, and Fulton it while you're standing on it.

I got an S-rank out of that.

S-rank is all about speed, basically all about efficiency. Like in real life (like Rainbow Six or something) you get the best result if you go hard and fast, not necessarily slow and sneaky. However, I've found that capturing loads of prisoners can also push you into S-grade. Idk if there are any good prisoners in Mission 16.

This is awesome.

Yeah, he only uses it when prompted to via the hold L1 and select command. He then equips in in his mouth and jumps at the enemy and slits their throat. It's especially useful for tight situations where a guard will find you when you don't want them to and don't mind killing at least one guard. If he gets the stun knife later on that's even more OP. DD is a boss to surpass even Big Boss himself. He is D Boss.

Still not seen Diamond Dog and I'm on the 11th mission, is there another way to get him?

Yeah, his location is random but I got to...Africa, I think, without having found him but someone suggested loading up Main Op 4 and checking around the LZ and lo and behold first time he was there.

WTF I just heard the Snake Eater theme on Mother Base! I tried to find where it was coming from and I got close, but couldn't before it was over. Is that a tape you can get? I must have it! It was in the Medbay.

Do you have quiet? If so she was the one listening to it probably.

good lord the r&d target practice course is a scavenger hunt in a maze. best score I have gotten is 16 :/-

It's insane isn't it!

As far as I can tell, all the other Mother Base Target Practice's are piss easy, but the R&D one is just insane. I think you have to start at the top and wind your way around all the pipes and routes around the outside of the buildings, tagging every target, then when you get to the bottom pick off those and then the ones in the tall alleyway.

Totally messed up. I might watch a video on how to do it, actually. The other ones are really fun but that one is a horror.

Have you met Quiet yet? If not, don't read ahead.

It could have been Quiet in her cell listening to music? The cell is under the floor outside so a bit hard to pinpoint. She listens to the radio all day so you can't steal her tapes, but she plays everything on the OST I think.

Yeah look on his upgrade tree, you can see the Stun Knife there.

Dog's a legend.

That's the worst one by far. The other ones at least have a clear cut path to take. R&D is designed like a "let's put one here and here and here and here" with no real distinction or it making any sense at how it was designed. Whoever designed that R&D one needs a slap.

Can't say I'm a fan of Ocelot's characterization in this one. Comes across as generic neutral good guy rather than the torture-happy asshole from the other games. Just listen to him talking about how they should treat Quiet fairly.

I think its actually layering him. There was an interesting tape where he explains why he is called Shalashaka and basically explains the cowboy GRU grim reaper torturer image is a useful persona he has developed

Dur. I forgot she was in there. Well I'm guessing that means it's a tape then, cool. She's my prisoner, I should have the right to her things!

She doesn't listen to tapes, dawg, she listens to the radio! So there ain't nothing to steal.

Infiltrate the radio station instead :P

The other dude above explained this really well. Listen to the 'Origin of Shalashaska' tape.

He's basically a master spy, so he can become anyone, any sort of person, and has a big fake image as a torturous badass. I think this game is the first time we are ever seeing the 'real' Revolver Ocelot.

Ah I didn't even think about
getting in the tanks (I suppose because I want to do everything non-lethally). I managed to extract the two tanks without being seen no problem, but fultoning the tank would alert all of the Skulls and I just legged it to the edge of the mission area.
I laid down C4 to stop the convoy like the other poster, but just got found out when sneaking around.
