Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain | Review Thread | Words That Kill

TI've seen what I was supposed to, and that's basically it. As for some super secret ending, I'm sure there isn't anything beyond that. It's not a bad story like I said, just paced pretty poorly. I'll take it over MGS4 any day.

This is actually pretty relieving. I know this is a late reply, but how would you compare it to Peace Walker's story? MGS4 and PW's bad stories were what really killed them for me, and while I've kind of lost hope that MGSV is the game that I was hoping it would be, a tolerable story with gameplay as excellent as what we saw in GZ is a worthwhile purchase for me.

*Peace Walker Spoilers* *Possible MGSV Spoilers* You know, in Peace Walker -
the end of the game isnt the real ending, you have extra stuff to do before you get the final ending which is actually the climatic ending

So what's the general opinion on Kiefer Sutherland as Big Boss?

I don't enjoy whining about spoilers, but there is a significant one around the 16 minute mark. The worst part is that he says 'this is not a spoiler' before dropping a huge spoiler.

Guess I just bailed in time. Got about 15 minutes in and shut it off entirely for different reasons. Greg seems like a personable guy who knows how to handle himself on camera, but goddamn that video was hard for me to sit through. The constant self promotion and scattered aimless rambling wore me out fast.

All I really know is that Greg played 54 hours in 6 days at the event(someone count how many times it was stated in the first 15 pls!), and I feel violated for the amount of winks and nods about kinda funny's YT channel he kept throwing at me. He kind of occasionally spit out a few impressions and thoughts on the game, but a bit more prep would have been appreciated. I couldn't bother to watch the second half.

Well doesn't it just hark back to the days of the PS1 and N64 platformers where
You would beat the game, but would need to get 100% in order to get the final cut scene

It was bullshit then too. I'm a full time university student and work 30 hours a week on top of that, I don't have the time to waste replaying shit I already did so I can get a satisfying conclusion to the story.

Tapes are totally cool for extra "fill in the blank" stuff and world-building, but the actual plot needs to be presented well in game for the best case solution.
Totally agree. Don't keep key narrative stuff in optional items. BioShock mucking up game stories 8 years and counting.

An open-world game having an end-game common to pretty much all open-world games is not a spoiler.

He said the credits rolled and there was more story stuff to do after, but he never explicitly mentioned a "second ending" or another set of credits. Maybe he saw one and just didn't mention it or maybe there isn't one. I'm not sure

He's seen
the common ending (which is the point we are talking about) and the true end after, to my understanding. I could be wrong though.
It's just been confirmed that there's
3 endings that have to be completed before the whole picture becomes clear.

Wait, 3 endings?

so there is the one you get regularily, the one after completing certain missions with modified conditions, but what is this about a third ending? First time I hear about it.

What's the "huge" spoiler? I just watched that part of the video and he says absolutely nothing about the story other than the number of hours he'd played when the main credits rolled, which will wildly differ from person to person .

What's wrong with it? You're upset? He's a massive MGS fan and is excited about reviewing and playing it

I don't get the problem

Not upset, just annoyed. Being excited is fine, but having a photo of him clutching the game in excitement on a publisher's twitter page is crass and tacky, especially if he's supposed to be reviewing the game. It's like having A.O Scott holding a screener dvd of some new movie he's going to review, giddy with excitement.

It's barely a degree short of Justin McElroy dancing with a copy of Gears of War 2.

So for people that have played it (I know you're out there), how is the story? Is the criticism overblown or is it really relegated to the background?

I'm just going to say that you complaining about Greg Miller taking a picture with the game is at least 10 times more annoying than Greg's picture with the game.

Seriously, do people have to complain about literally anything these days?

Yeah same here, glad someone else noticed and was turned off enough to close it out. Seems like a case where a written review would've been preferable assuming he would've been more concise, even if he just read it on camera. Also didn't care for the LP video since his playstyle made me cringe, but that can at least be partially chalked up to inexperience.

Gregg Miller has always been an assbag anyway. Don't be surprised if he gets hard every time a fresh copy comes to his greasy hands.

Get over yourself, it's just a picture.

You have no right in calling anyone a assbag after spouting that shit from your mouth.

I'm sorry if this has been asked before as I'm trying to be in a complete media black out for this game but is there a version of metal gear solid online that comes with it? Any details on that?

Yes but its launching a few months after release. PC version is next year I believe (January or February)

Hmm 4Players isn't that optimistic. Disappointing story, bosses (when compared with mgs1-4) and lots if recycling. No score yet because they could only play the campaign on the review event. But they say it's going to be somewhere around 78-80%. For reference: They gave mgs4 90%.

I don't know, I knew there were multiple missions locked out which obviously make up one of the endings but a Spanish mag who also video reviewed the game confirmed it.
The vids in the spoiler thread.

I never liked 4players anyway, everyone else giving it good reviews and them giving it 78-80%. Trying to garner attention by being the odd one out. Not a single review I've read has said its all recycling content lol.
