We're back with an update on that little project we told you about last year... the Metallica 3D movie filmed in Vancouver in August of 2012. Some of you were kind enough to be a huge part of our three nights of filming and may be wondering just what the heck has been happening since then. Throughout the Fall and first part of this year, we've been working with director Nimrod Antal and a team of editors to pull all the pieces together and so we are beyond excited to now actually have a release date and a title... drum-roll please, "Metallica Through The Never" coming to theaters on August 9!

We're also proud to announce that we will be teaming up with independent film marketing and distribution company Picturehouse to help us spread the love in theaters. Like your friends in 'Tallica, Picturehouse is truly independent, take big chances and often think outside of the box. Founder Bob Berney has overseen the releases of two of the most successful independent films ever, "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" and "The Passion of the Christ," as well as many other cutting edge, critically acclaimed and award winning films.

From the Picturehouse press release:

Picturehouse's first new release will be Metallica Through The Never a feature film starring members of the iconic rock band and Dane DeHaan (Chronicle, The Amazing Spider-Man 2). DeHaan plays a young band crew member who is sent out on an urgent mission while the band is playing a rousing live set in front of a sold-out crowd and unexpectedly finds his world turned completely upside down. The film, written and directed by Nimród Antal (Kontroll, Predators), is due in theaters August 9. One of the bestselling rock acts of all time, Metallica has sold over 105 million albums worldwide.

"Nim and the band have made a film that really captures the spirit of Metallica and their millions of loyal fans," said Mr. Berney. "It's an entertaining genre film with a concert inside it, a fun ride featuring an exciting young actor, Dane DeHaan. It's a very cool project to reboot Picturehouse with."

Added Metallica drummer and founding member Lars Ulrich: "Metallica's way of doing things is to jump into unexplored creative endeavors with no safety net whatsoever. Putting this movie together for the last couple of years has been a pretty wild ride, and we've definitely done our share of flying without a net! Bringing Bob and Jeanne and the new Picturehouse team in at this point provides us with a much needed level of security for the distribution of the film. Their spirit of independence and desire to work outside the box is something we can relate to in every way, and this makes them both a welcome addition and a natural fit in the Metallica family."

So a story within a concert film huh? Interesting.

As much as I like Dane DeHaan, Metallica doing their own version of The Song Remains the Same sounds like it will be the worst thing ever.

Whatever happened to the Metallica vehicle combat video game that got teased around when St Anger came out?

According to the Krawall Gaming Network (KGN) online games magazine, Vivendi Universal Games (VU Games) has abandoned plans to release a multi-platform vehicle combat action game featuring music, voice-overs and inspiration from Metallica. The game, which was announced in June 2003, was reportedly called off because Vivendi felt that the project's creative direction didn't pass the quality standards set by the company.

Metallica had previously signed an exclusive multi-year agreement with Vivendi Universal Games (VU Games) granting the company the worldwide rights to publish and distribute the action game. The game — which was described in a June 2003 press release as "a high-action, third-person vehicle combat game packed with fully customized vehicles and weaponry, endless terrain and desperate, murderous opponents" — was slated to include voice-overs from band members, incidental background music and other exclusive content from Metallica. Under terms of the contract, Metallica were also expected to record an original song exclusively for the game along with a music video featuring elements from the interactive experience.

It's a shame Vivendi couldn't have cancelled St. Anger as well.

Make a new album already.

They are.....

Lars said:
"The stuff that we were banging out yesterday, it felt heavy, it felt energetic, it was loud, it was fast, it was rocking, it was crazy," he said, adding: ''The snare drum was on there and there were guitar solos, in case anybody was wondering.''

Revealing more details about the album, Ulrich added: ''What we're doing now certainly sounds like a continuation of where we left off four years ago.'' However, there is less certainty over the role producer Rick Rubin will play on the album, with Ulrich only able to say: ''I love Rick, we all love Rick. We're in touch with Rick constantly. We'll see where it goes.''

Expect it sometime in 2014.

Sweet, looking forward to this. Quebec Magnetic was really good so I'm sure with the bigger budget and the fact that Hetfield sounds a little better now than they did 4 or so years ago will help.

As much as I like Dane DeHaan, Metallica doing their own version of The Song Remains the Same sounds like it will be the worst thing ever.

Well they are great at cover songs, so maybe they will be good at a cover film?

Dave Mustaine is impressed with your ability to hold decade long grudges.

LOL

Wait... are they going to act?!

As much as I like Dane DeHaan, Metallica doing their own version of The Song Remains the Same sounds like it will be the worst thing ever.

Lars also discussed this in a recent interview.....

“There are similarities [to The Song Remains The Same],” Ulrich tells Classic Rock magazine.

“There are four members in Led Zeppelin, four members in Metallica, it’s a full-length movie, and there’s a lot in this film that does not take place onstage.

“The major difference is that the stuff that takes place offstage in the Metallica movie does not feature any members of Metallica. It’s two separate worlds – a Metallica show and a story that unfolds in a parallel universe – and at some point they intertwine.”

Parallel universe? Could be interesting...

Metallica's cover of The Prince on the B side of One was the absolute height of the band in my eyes.

Now I see his face, I see his smile
Such a lonely place, no golden mile
Eyes tell of morbid tales, of his black heart
His deeds through ages past, tell of his part

See his face, see his smile
Time to die
Yo-ooh, waoh, no

So, why is this going to be in 3D? Will there be a guy flying into the screen jumping into a mosh pit?

They had stage props for these performances:

This is the setlist:

"Creeping Death"
"For Whom the Bell Tolls"
"Fuel"
"Ride the Lightning"
"One"
"Cyanide"
"The Memory Remains"
"Wherever I May Roam"
"Sad But True"
"Welcome Home (Sanitarium)"
" . . . And Justice for All"
"Fade to Black"
"Master of Puppets"
"Battery"
"Nothing Else Matters"
"Enter Sandman"
"Hit the Lights"
"Seek & Destroy"

They started playing ...And Justice for All again? I thought they stopped playing that because they saw people in the crowd yawning by the time they got to the end.

They had an electric chair set-up during Ride The Lightning:
