"Meteos is an interesting take on the puzzle genre and stands out enough to be worth a look. It may not be to everyone's liking -- it took quite a while to grow on me -- but stick with the game and explore its depths and you'll be pleasantly surprised by how entertaining it can be. Insanely fast, frequently clever and perfectly suited to the Nintendo DS, the game doesn't quite live up to the standard set by its PSP-based sibling Lumines. But so long as you don't mind getting your action in three-minutes bursts, Meteos is fun, unique and highly addictive. "

Too bad this didn't score higher than Lumines, I was hoping to get an even better experience from this. Regardless I will end up buying this since Q Entertainemnt really showed me they can make puzzle games.
 
Seems like a really great game. I don't have the patience to play a puzzle game for 3 hours per round, so I'd probably enjoy this more.
 
Do you think the DS will finally deliver a gem by way of an original IP developed specifically for the system, or do you think it will take yet another iteration of the classic standby's, ie. Mario, Zelda, etc.?
 
I'm sure I'll enjoy both for what they bring to the table (slow zen vs fast stress)

For fucks sake, the game sounds great from all we've read. Even this.

Why are people intent on pitting good game against good game and making one the 'loser' so to speak? Fuck that noise. Don't give some of the people above the satisfaction.
 
I'm going on a trip for a couple days this afternoon.

Meteos is in my back pocket. I shall play it.... that is, if I can tear myself away from the thrilling card action that is the u.s. version of Metal Gear Acid. :rolleyes

And yes, Mizuguchi am cry.
 
Some people just feel the need to whip out thier brand loyality dicks to see whose is bigger and so forth. Best thing to do is ignore or mock them.

Meteos sounds fucking awesome. Can't wait to get my hands on it.
 
Bah, Meteos.. Lumines. They're no bowl of Special K.

(One site on the internet gave the game an 8.0 so this means I'd better sell my DS and buy a Power Rangers hand held game from Tiger Electronics)

heh I hope this thread backfires and that the obvious bitchfest between Lumines and Meteos dont happen as someone tried to start.
 
Meteos apparently has a serious gameplay flaw that might hurt it's review scores if reviewers take it against it. It's not something you can't avoid with some self-restraint, but if you want to exploit, it allows you to cheat very easily, and finish the whole game, just by quickly sliding the stylus down the screen couple times a second. Someone on Tokyopia basically finished the whole game just by doing this, only stopping couple of times to actually think what to do next.
 
...Jeremy Parish imported a copy and received it today (mine is due to arrive on Monday, I was not on the ball this time) but let me play it all afternoon. Amazingly, both Meteos and Q Entertainment's other puzzle game, Lumines, are both equally compelling plays. But something about Meteos just resonates with me. From the CG opening (yes, it's so cool, spaceships, all kinds of crap) to the send-the-falling-blocks-blasting-off-into-space-on-rocket-thrusters gameplay is in danger of having me in withdrawal systems until my own copy arrives. Luckily it's coming to the States but everything about this game is so cool. Even the menu bars slide around like air hockey pucks when you moosh them with the stylus. I predict that this will call my DS home for quite some time to come. I can hardly wait to kick Mr. Driller to the curb.

i don't know why you'd want to do that gameplay trick :\

the more i play meteos, the more addicted i become :D i've moved off 'star trip' mode into the 'choose skin/speed/lives/gravity' mode - and its awesome. i played it for about 4 hours straight last night. the way the sound effects sync with the music is awesome (in the level i was playing, like a steel drum sound) and i haven't ever been tempted to use that 'move the pen up and down' move. i'd rate it higher, more around a 9. it's not perfect, but it's bloody good.

oh, and that quote above pretty much nails it, the 'rocket' mechanic has an addiction to it - nothing like having a rocket slowly drift down to the bottom, and while its falling you set up some more blocks to line up with it - it hits the bottom and BANG! takes off at full speed :D
 
I just read the Another Code review thread and thought "OK, yeah, that's an 8.0 and I can deal with the PSP comparison once", then I come into this thread and WTF!? Another PSP comparison and another 8.0. Fuck, it's a decent score, but it's lame that they keep comparing the machines. You don't see the Xbox mentioned in every PS2 review.
 
Jeremy already said on his blog that he was the only person in the ZD office who wasn't feeling Meteos. Claimed it was too hectic of a puzzle game for his tastes. But 8.0 is hardly a bad score, and he wasn't even blown away by it. I expect to see higher from others.

Sorry, should I not have mentioned Lumines, a recently-released game designed by the same man... a game of the same genre as Meteos, which I was playing simultaneously for review alongside Meteos? I didn't realize that important contextual information would be so emotionally damaging to you.

I'll go back and add a random PSP comparison to the Touch & Go review if you ask really nicely.

Mizuguchi designed neither Lumines nor Meteos. Meteos was created by Sakurai. And please do stick a PSP reference in the Touch & Go review for good measure. I love you, really :D

Ya know, I only ever get Pass/Fail grades in gym. I never understood how someone could scale a letter grade to a PE class, but oh, well.

OK, OK, sorry -- designed was the wrong word (and in fact I avoided any overt reference to the man in the Meteos review). "Produced by"/"directed by"/"graced by the divine hand of," whatever. The point remains! A Meteos review without an aside to Lumines is like cornflakes without the milk.

The prospect of combining Touch & Go with the PSP horrifies me. Dragging a scratchy stylus across that delicate eggshell of a screen... yeep.
 
Out of interest, what does the Lumines review say about Meteos in terms of comparisons ?

As I've said, with some self restraint that issue should not be much of an issue. It does cheapen the game when you want to compare high scores with other people, though You can never know if they just went cheapo way, or payed fair.

Jack shit, because I hadn't yet played Meteos when I wrote the Lumines review. Tragically, I am constrained by linear time and wasn't able to accurately predict how I would feel about Meteos. Damn causality all to hell!
