I started playing Metro 2033 last week.

I usually have a pretty high tolerance for jank and difficult games. I love Stalker. I love Dark Souls.

But this game pisses me off to almost no end.

The main problem is the janky inconsistency:

-Guards seeminly randomly spot you if you try to sneak by them and not in a way that is any way convincing. It seems scripted the scripting is not transparent.

-Hit the same guy with a knife in the same spot. Sometimes it downs him, sometimes it doesnt.

-Try to jump out of a hole in the ground that you crawled through only to have your dude hump the edge of it over and over again until you jank your way out of the whole.

The part that I'm on right now, at the Communist camp is one of the most infuriating things I've played in the last five years. Scripted stealth bullshit that I have to watch over and over again because I can't auto-save.

"They were yelling and screaming but no one could make it out. Nazi bitches had cut their tongues out..."

I must have heard this conversation at least fifty times at this point. The conversation ends with one character saying "How could a man do this to another" to which I'm tempted to yell out, probably because he played this fucking game wand wanted to murder everything around him as a result.

I'm so angry at this point if I could negative buy the sequel out of principle and spite, I would.

They devs are well aware of these faults too. They expressed that they were definitely working on these elements for Last Light. Especially stealth and gunplay. I just hope they haven't gone too far in the other direction

Well why didn't they fix it in the first game? How the hell hard is it to make "knife throw = death"?

I am a pretty patient guy. I like stealth games. I have no problem waiting and listening to a 5 minute conversation or watching guards patterns. But when I have to do that over and over again not because I fuck up but because the game randomly decides that that knife throw didn't count, that is utter bullshit.

basically play metro 2033 on easy and shoot every thing that moves, more fun, some will disagree, they are masochists.

Actually, I think you threw the knife at the armored part of the guard. (Helmet, shoulder pad...etc). A throwing knife in any location of their body is an instant one-shot especially their backs.

Nope, we are talking about right behind the dude in the square of the back. Maybe the hit detection is so shitty, though, that the game can't tell the difference between the front and the back.

It seems like the largest inconsistencies are when characters are moving or are in the "supiscious" animations. Then it's almost a crap shoot as to whether or not the knife registers correctly.

Just hope the gunplay feels right in this one. Did not like that aspect of Metro 2033. Not a huge fan of the voice acting either but I doubt that's going to change.

Oh yeah, I remember getting all manner of weird shit during guards' "alarmed" state. It's hard to one-shot them when they're alerted for some reason. That's why I prefer to do "ghost" playthroughs and minimize human causalities so I wouldn't have to deal with their inconsistent as hell AI.

I love Metro but they really need to do something about their AI both in stealth and combat.

Also, are you playing in one of the Ranger difficulty levels?

I didnt have problems with "shotty hit detection" in 2033 because I realized that armor on characters blocked bullets and you have to shoot the areas where the plating isnt protecting them. The AI is broken though.
PC Gaming has finally gotten to the point where most high profile FPS won't run well on my computer. Bittersweet.
The game is still built around console hardware limitations. If the 360 can run this game, your computer will be able to run it. Dont worry.

I haven't looked into this series much, despite getting 2033 from the Facebook promotion and Last Light through my GTX660 purchase.

Not sure if they should be a priority or I should keep going through The Witcher and Dark Souls.

How far are you into The Witcher?

I hope it's going to be better than the last. Metro 2033 had a brilliant atmosphere and very good ideas, but were in my opinion poorly executed at some points. While the areas and the whole game had it's own unique feel to it, the shooting side of the game was almost none existent. Weapons didn't feel strong at all and at some parts glitches/bugs stopped me from doing what had to be done. Though I enjoyed the game very much even with these flaws. I'm looking forward to what the next one brings to the table.

I feel guilty for not finishing the first game still, but I will fix that soon. I really enjoyed it, but got caught up with work and stuff.

I'll probably save the 2nd for when I upgrade my rig. I barely meet the min spec. as it is right now.

I'm playing on "Normal" whatever that was called.

I eventually made it past that part I was stuck on because I found the order and timing the designers wanted me to use to get past it.

But now I'm stuck on another fight across a long bridge.

It seems this game is often more of a game of "guess what is on the designer's mind."

There is an alternate route under the bridge that will take you straight beneath the Nazis' base without having to deal with anyone on top of the bridge. Listen to the conversation between the captured soldier and his superiors who are about to execute him.

I think I played 2033 on hard, although not sure. I remember it being quite difficult in some areas, but nothing a bunch of retries couldn't fix. It was a bit short and you could definitely feel that they sort of rushed the game. I read the book beforehand and was quite surprised when I heard there was a decent FPS game out, so I bought this one for just a few bucks. Finished it in 8 hours or so.

Really curious to what they're doing next. The setting is awesome. I'm a huge sci fi nerd and the story of Metro works perfectly for a video game. I loved the fact that bullets were rare and the better bullets were even used as money. Makes you think while shooting.

The dev team took their time on this one, so I expect a lot less bugs, weird aiming mechanics and hopefully a bit more replay value. Color me stoked, folks.

Has anyone purchased music from Sumthing.com before? They have the Metro: Last Light OST for sale, and I assume it's a digital download, but I can't find any information on what format the music would be in.

I don't believe the track names are spoilers, but if you are on a blackout, then it might be best to avoid them, just to be safe.

Absolutely love STALKER/Metro 2033 type of games. Been on media blackout with Last Light and I am excited to finally jump back into the metro.

Dammit why isn't amazon carrying Steam keys? I have a lot of giftcard credit there.

Some dude was selling steam keys from some Geforce voucher for 25 bucks on Ebay; Snagged one and he sent it to me asap. My day got a little better.

So little hype for this and the game seems to be amazing.

Thinking seriously in buying it.

I just need to know a few things like, duration, collectibles, that kind of stuff.

Really excited for this although I haven't pre-ordered yet so you beautiful geforece code owners should contact me ;)

Glad Ranger Hardcore Mode is available from day 1, one of the apparently less than 1% people who beat the game on it. Although I bought the PC version when the DLC released, played it on the 360 first. I hope
there are no fucking amoebas

I'm really pumped for this game but I'm waiting for the PS4 version since I don't have a PC that can run it and I've never played 2033 and that version will supposedly come with it. I hope the game is great and does well until then.

Would be nice if the multiplayer expansion/whatever was out by then and included as well.

I just finished Metro 2033 a few minutes ago. I ended up taking the advice in this thread and switching to "easy" about half way through. I only wish I had done it sooner. There were STILL sections that I thought were unfair, janky, and where I died repeatedly, but I seriously doubt I would have had the endurance to stick through it if I had not switched.

I don't think I've ever played a game that is simultaneously so original and well executed in terms of variety, pacing and narrative and yet so unbalanced and janky in terms of delivery. On "normal' difficulty, I'd probably give it a "D" rating at best. But on easy it's a solid B title.

But even still, there was one section about an hour from the end that combined pretty much every shitty thing ever in one place:

1) escort mission w/ escort who can die
2) respawning enemies
3) exploding poisonous enemies
4) limited ammo
5) on rail sequence that "pushes you forward"

All at the same time. That section deserves an award for most crap section in a videogame in the last decade.

Damn, forgot this is coming out soon. Just spent my stash of game money on a mechanical keyboard and a new mouse.

Anyone here interested in buying a slightly tainted soul for €45 ?
