Metroid Prime 4: Beyond | Review Thread

Sounds like a bunch of butt hurt fanboys reviewing the game ... except for Patrick Tremblay who is a real man among boys.

Of course anything nintendo needs to be glazed and given a 90+ if not your a fanboy.

dissapointing as this was one of the games I got an early switch 2 for. However being just a single player game anyway I can wait a few months for some sales down in the $50-$55 range that Nintendo will sometimes do. I'm sure I'll enjoy it being a regular Metroid fan but not for $70.

Funny- I thought ALL Nintendo games were "overrated" by reviewers and given inflated scores cause "Nintendo"... So these now are GENUINE scores? Reviewers don't love Nintendo anymore??? Fuck the haters- I'll judge for myself tomorrow and play the living fuck out of this all weekend. I find my tastes align pretty closely with John Linneman from digital foundry (not a massive fan of DF and the way they over analyse everything, but he's a good dude) and his review was very glowing, claiming it to be his 2nd fav in the series!

Well, this is somewhat good news. I'll put this on pause until after Christmas - I'd much rather have a remaster of Echoes (the best in the series IMO).

Lol. I came here just for comments like this. Incredible that people still think this way.

In 2025. A lot of middle aged people on here, too.

We all know how this was always going to go with that sort. There would be zero talk about inflated scores from them if the reviews were incredibly good. None.

The reviews aren't completely where they want them to be so now we'll get the usual song and dance routine where one by one any insufficently positive review will be declared somehow invalid through some magical and self-serving thinking.

This shit was tiresome when it was happening back when it was you and a bunch of other teenagers arguing about stuff back in the 2000s. When half of those people are now staring down the barrel of 50 it becomes depressing.

I think the real problem is actually every game feeling like Zelda now. Odyssey, Bananza, Mario Kart, and now Prime have all taken cues from botw.
This is what happens when fools say BotW is the greatest video game of all time despite having horrendous flaws like the weapon breaking system and weak dungeon design.

Honestly, it being cross generation kept my expectations in check.
I don't even feel bad about getting this for my Switch 1 (don't have a 2 yet). It seems to fit more naturally structure-wise for that console. And with "getting" I mean borrowing from library for free. It's a very short game and I might make it a drinking game. Every time that nerd pipes up I'll take a swig of scotch.

I bet you're not the only one.

I was going to place a preorder today (retailers are still doing discounts for them) but I won't be doing that now.

I actually think overall that GAF is overreacting right now, but the negative and disappointing elements as described in the reviews are just so off-putting that i'm not rushing out to spend full price (minus a small preorder discount) on this.

I was hoping and praying for a gold plated banger but the critical consensus - while generally good - doesn't sound like that at all.

Nah. It's just your comment about having no interest seems obvious. It would be like me popping into the Astrobot review thread and claiming I have zero interest when I don't even have a PS5. Like duh lol

A PS5 game could take your interest and lead you to purchase a PS5. It's just as valid to express an interest in a game as a PS5 owner as it to not be a PS5 owner and express a lack of interest in a game.

We can all post about whatever games we like on whatever platforms we do or don't own. There is no duh about it, because for instance here you might consider buying a Switch 2 if this game sounded sick.

I am just sad.

Zelda, Metroid, and then Super Metroid was the foundation of my gaming life. They influenced everything about the way I look at games.

To see my most beloved game series continually fall further and further from the heights that defined it is really painful. I held out hope for Metroid Dread, but it turned out to be yet another hand holding modern game.

On one hand I am sad. The greatest game of all time Super Metroid, has devolved into this kiddie game modern day marvel script slop.

On the other hand I got Silksong. A true successor to the throne of Metroidvania. A game made by people who absolutely within their soul understand what makes the genre shine.

I was going to buy a switch 2 for prime 4. Now I am not buying either of them.
You didn't like Metroid Dread? I loved it, it was my GOTY when it released. Too easy to 100% but it was still an amazing Metroid overall for me. Great boss battles! Absolute perfection regarding controls. Felt like a proper Metroid and going for 100% was great fun and fairly challenging at least from the shinespark sections.

Silksong was difficult in the wrong way imo. I absolutely hated how they messed up the otherwise great boss battles with minions that broke up any attempt to have a methodical boss strategy. Still 100-percented it and at least out of the TGA nominees it's the GOTY, but compared to Hollow Knight and certainly Super Metroid it's a couple points down.

Anyhow, in the end I'll still get Metroid Prime 4, can't stay away. But I don't expect to sit here and praise it, all the critique I've seen is about key things for the genre. Adding a talking side character is bad enough, you're supposed to be alone on an alien planet. But adding exploration hand-holding to a metroidvania is just wrong, takes away the whole point of the genre, it's like adding a speed limit to a racing game.

But this always works both ways, if a Nintendo game scores well it's the reviewers are in Nintendo's pockets etc etc. Of course if it reviews not as well it's the truth with no hidden agendas, as it's just honest reviewers telling people how it is lol..

you are reading it wrong.

Nintendo games are overrated, that s a fact, but this one is so mid that most reviewers couldnt in their right mind score it more than a 8. However, it still is overrated, being a Nintendo game, the true score should probably be between 65 an 70

The scores are good but the context of what is bad is jarring…

I'll wait for more GAF impressions. Things can be blown out of proportion.

Let's be real though … I bought my NS2 for this game so I don't see myself skipping it even if I am hesitant.

What a shame. Prime 1 is one of my favorite games of all time. I don't own a Switch 2, but this was the only announced 1st party titles I was genuinely excited about. I guess I'm now waiting a few years for the Switch 2 OLED revision with a new Zelda or Mario title.

Eh? That's a great game. How would the reception of this change that?
I simply mean that I held off playing Metroid Prime Remastered, for fear of being burnt out before heading onto Metroid Prime 4.
Now that 4 doesn't sound like something I'm going to be frothing at the mouth to play, I can revisit an old friend for my Metroid fix.
