MGS3 doesn't get the credits it deserved?

I don't have MGS3 yet, though.. when I'm browsing this board I come many posts across where they say something like:

"MGS3 doesn't get the attention it deserved"

I live in europe, that means MGS 3 has still need to get launched here... but, what's the thing with MGS3 than? Doesn't it sell well because of the leak of attention?

I know MGS2 was like, the most hyped game ever so it gets automatically a lot of attention...

It sold below expectations first month in the US, picked up in the 2nd month with more respectable numbers.

I used to work for a place called Gamedude, incidentally.

Is English your 3rd language? j/k..

MGS3 was certainly overshadowed by a few key releases.. which ended up being inferior games (imo). If it's not too smothered for the European launch, it should see a decent amount of hype especially given the critical acclaim.

MGS3 adressed all the criticisms of the second game. It is a super production, with many memorable characters, great gameplay and wonderful art.

It is a pity that MGS3 suffered from the lack of hype. It is the best game of the last 4 years IMHO.

It's MGS2's fault that MGS3 has been overlooked/sold below expectations. Hype's a bitch, specially if you don't deliver. :P

MGS3 is game of the motherfreakin' generation.

MGS3 is one of the best games ever, especially the last few hours.Kojima is a genius and I hope he directs the fourth one.The MGS series is the only games that have brought out the kind of emotions that movies do.They basically transcend movies, since you can play at the same time.

MGS3 is I think the only game that made me tear up at the end.

MGS2 is definitely the reason why MGS3 has been overlooked. A lot of people probably felt ripped off (like I did, expecting a great game not a damn real time rendered movie) after purchasing MGS2. I reluctantly played MGS3 recently, and I must admit it is a pretty good game. Although I was still turned off by the overly drawn out dialog (a lot of what they say can be said in far less words).

Yes, MGS3 is more of a cult game. They have alot of followers who think its the best, but it doesnt get mainstream attention, in a way, its tooo smart for mainstream who play Madden, or NFSU2 whatever.

It definately is a better game than Halo 2 or GTA SA IMHO who get more credit than they deserve just because of the sales and hype. I tink alot of people realize now that Halo 2 was indeed a major let down, it had the MGS2 effect where it got great reviews but ultimately its not even close to what people were expecting. Now Ive heard "dont get yourself too hyped" thing before but I was 0 hyped for Halo 2 and still thought it was a joke of a sequel.

Anyway, I think MGS3 is the best game of the Generation and even close to MGS1 as the best game ever.

According to most people it wont convert the ones who thought MGS/MGS2 had too much movies/cut scenes for its own sake....my brother will get it when its released in Europe, so ill try it then, but im not holding my breath....

I guess nobody told you, MGS3 isn't on a Nintendo console. You won't like it, anyway. :P

MGS3 was my GOTY (RE4 would have been if it had actually been released in 2004). It's unfortunate that it got almost completely overshadowed by games like Halo 2 and GTA: SA.

Japanese games have been overlooked by western media for GOTY considerations for the past few years, and perhaps some felt the need to compensate for the media's overrating of MGS2 by taking it out on MGS3, so I guess it's not that surprising.

I just started MGS 3 (played through a ton of others first, and had to finish RE 4 3 times). I just got to the 2nd act (beginning of the Snake Eater mission) and its definitely growing on me.

I'd say the opposite, actually. It gets too much credit.
I haven't played it yet, but plan on it as soon as I finish the amazing Resident Evil 4 on GameCube and the another great game I'm having a ton of fun with: Beyond Good & Evil on Xbox. Especially since I just bought a brand new slimline PS2 and stand with component cables (basically just for GT4 and MGS3).

BUT... there is absolutely no doubt in my mind this game gets all the credit it needs, considering it is hailed around here as one of the greatest games of alltime and is pretty much most people's GoTY. So, how on earth is it possible to NOT be getting the credit it deserves? If anything, the only thing that is possible in this regard, is it's getting TOO much credit. But the opposite is fricken impossible, considering the posts around here. I hope I'm not let down by all this crazy ass mega hype though. I did not like MGS2 at all.

It doesn't get the credit it deserves and anyone who's a hater obviously hasn't playing past the Virtious Mission.

To be fair, I can see why they wouldn't if they were worried about another ridiculous angst-fest like MGS2 was. I stopped right around the time Snake was told he was to leave no trace of his presence (not even shell casings!) for fear of Soviet retaliation, immediately after having discarded his entire parachute as well as his helmet which has "US ARMY" emblazoned on the front, then is instructed to hurry because he has only a few hours before he'll be picked up and if he misses it, that's all she wrote. Then he finds out The Boss is his contact for the mission and starts whining about why she abandoned him. In the meantime, I'm screaming at the television that we need to fucking move it because we were just told we have a four hour window or we're abandoned in the bloody jungle, and maybe the "waaah, I was so alone" crap can wait until we're, say, no longer in Communist territory.

But I fired it up again a week or so later and got past that part, and yeah, it gets awesome after Virtuous Mission.

I think he means in terms of sales and in the videogame media. Because yes, it definitely gets enough praise from us.

ah, ok.... i see.

sorry for misunderstanding then.

but while we're on this topic, i'd say a game that is not getting the credit it should is Oddworld Stranger.

good question. what are the sales of MGS3? have they been poor or something? that's hard to believe. i remember when MGS2 came out and i couldn't even get in the software etc. store that day, the chaos in there was a sight to behold. surely all those fans are still around (?).

Its sold about 800k in both the US and Japan

It and GT4 are going to be pretty hot in Europe, especially in the UK. RE4 (also a March release) on the other hand won't be big in Europe, I'm afraid.

I wouldnt know. The haunting memories of MGS2 came back quickly after an hour or so. I just can`t take all that stupid codec talk and cut scenes again, ugh. Not to mention it still controls as stupid as ever. Gameplay feels very dated.

Yeah, that was a mistake...

The first hour or so is loaded with lengthy codec scene and such, which might turn people off right away. However, once you've entered the meat of Operation Snake Eater, there is a good chance you'll forget the codec is even in the game...

I don't think the gameplay feels all that dated, though. The camera is problematic, but the gameplay is still very unique. It just has a very steep learning curve...

Well, I liked the first MGS a lot so I am familiar with the series. I also played through MGS2 and obvioulsy HATED it. :lol
But after having played games like Splinter Cell etc, although I`m not a big fan of them, I find the MGS games awkward to play.

Splinter...Cell?

Ugh. It controls well, but everything else is poorly designed. Awful AI, ultra-linear mission design, and a complete lack of polish. I hope you aren't insinuating that MGS is dated in comparison to Splinter Cell. :P

PT's online mode was fantastic, though...
