MGS3 is a fucking masterpiece

the rare instance where I'll allow the use of Masterpiece given how extremely well designed it is and how innovative elements of it are.
the attention to detail and little things to discover is also astonishing for a PS2 era game.

Having to constantly pause the game to change your cammo was annoying. Also, in my opinion it was starting to show the beginning of the decline of the series with marvelised and comic like characters and too much melodrama. Still a great experience but it wasn't the revolution that was MGS2.
MGS2 had a fat dude on roller skates…

They packaged everything up to 4 into one package for PS3 but that was it. Ridiculous they never tried to bring it forward.

Hard to put that incomplete story aside though. Yeah, the game itself was fantastic.
Wasn't there an issue with the repackaged 1,2 and 3 on PS3? Like something to do with the dual layer format?

This. MGSV is one of if not THE best playing stealth game of all time IMO. Despite the story and "MGSness" being disappointing I put over 150 hours into the game. The opening in the hospital with the Bowie cover is amazing.

That being said MGS3 is absolutely a masterpiece and one of the greatest games of all time. Subsistence plays modern enough to still be easily enjoyed, and the music/characters are the best in the series IMO.

Easily in my top 5 games.
It is the best playing stealth game of all time, but the story is just as good as how it plays. Like how people had to get over not playing as solid in 2 the opinions on V are clouded by their expectations getting completely broken.

It's sacrilege that all 5 games aren't in some super collection for all 3 platforms.

It is all we ask for from our games.

Cheesiness - checked
Complex dynamic gameplay systems - checked
Fun, engaging story that bigK somehow did not ruined with his retardation - checked
Ambition that goes way beyond what seems to be possible on the platform it made for - checked
Not playing it save - checked
Great Score - checked
Decent length - checked
RePlayability - sure fucking CHECKED
Constantly poking fun at player with quality postmodern jokes - checked

It is game industry version of a true classic on a level of Leone's Dollar Trilogy.

Til this very day still my no 1 game.

Beautiful story
Out of the box gameplay
Incredible graphics for a PS2 game
Magnificent soundtrack
The legendary soldier BIG BOSS

the painful debriefing scene where you learn The Boss' true motives and she didn't betray the US and gave her life in fulfilling her last mission.

No other game will even surpass this gem for me.

Hot take, its the 2nd worst one after 4

It needed the Subsistence version to be playable with the new camera and its full of things to slow down and clog up playing like the healing systems

Still I will give it one thing, the story and the Camo system are excellent

MGS3 is absolutely brilliant. Now, I didn't really feel the original release because of the camera and 30fps opposed to the slick MGS2, but I liked its setting, characters, story, detail in foliage etc. But more than in MGS2 the fixed camera was an issue to me. But Subsistence? When I popped that in my PS2 I was instantly hooked and it was actually my number one MGS game. The camera also made the details more apparent, the flies around trees, just everything. For a PS2 game this is insane, for example take The End fight. You can use sounds to your advantage, but you can also follow tracks, however, if it starts to rain they get erased. wtf. You can even end this fight prematurely. Or you can literally sit it out.

Or, you destroy supply bunkers and soldiers will get famine, and lose morale and sharpness. They will complain about being tarnished and they're easy obstacles.

MGS3 is far better and its more advanced than 4 despite being a PS2 game.

MGS2 is my favourite for certain reasons, but I think 3 Subsistence is the best MGS purely from gaming standpoint. You are BB, you are in the jungle, its true Metal Gear.

3 is up there with 1 as my favourite. The story is absolutely incredible 😍.

2 has aged like fine wine and was always the best playing for its time.

4 has some of the best moments though opens a few plot holes and the pacing falls apart after Act 2.

V and PW are completely forgettable story wise. Definitely my least favourites.

Believe it or not 2 is my favorite and bring the most memories ... 1, 3 and even 4 are fenomenal either.. 5 is open world dog shit diarrhea

Yeah, absolutely this ^

Regarding 3, yeah, it is a complex, monumental story, ingeniously wrapped in a deceptively simple and sincere narrative, that succedes in satisfying all levels of literacy.
If you think you actually got MGS3, chances are you didn't, not even close, and that's the real beauty of it: you don't have to, in order to be madly in love with it.

Snake Eater is imo, the best fall from grace story ever told, ever.

The Metal Gear Solid series is amazing, 3 is one of the better ones, I love them all. Maybe for nostalgia reasons, but the first one still cause me goosebumps and the Tanker intro on MGS2 was one of the most amazing moments in my gaming history.

It really is the greatest video game ever. Its deep and tactical gameplay lends for endless replays. It is absolutely packed with secrets, to the point where at one point you're playing a completely different game. Its AI feels authentic and puts most modern games to shame. The way you can interact and manipulate AI is also genius. The story has this absolute sweet spot of all that's great about its setting. The advent of nuclear technology, the rise of 60's culture, the espionage action and the commentary on Cold War nationalism/fanaticism. Its cutscenes are masterfully directed. All around top notch camera work, animations and acting. The music blends contemporary jazz-influenced music with bombastic blockbuster pieces.

It truly is a game that comes with it all. MGS3 uses its inspirational sources with pride to create something that is also wholly unique. It's a one in a life time video game.

MGS 3 is just incredible. The story, jungle, and characters are all peak Kojima. Still like MGS1 more because at the time of release it was mind blowing and Shadow Moses is top tier setting. It's like the mansion in RE1. Shadow Moses itself is a character. MGS -- MGS3 -- MGS2 -- MGS5 -- MGS4. MGS 4 is just a mess of a game that is barely holding together.

Sheeeeeeyit, this thread is making me want to replay MGS 1/2/3/5, and finish 4 for the first time. I've got them all on consoles but wish they were all on PC for beautification and laziness reasons

I've never understood the love for 3. MGS2 is better. And 3 retconned the Patriots into the goons you talked to - including Para-medic and Signit - instead of something interesting. Story was off the rails already by that point, but this retcon turned it from off the rails fun to off the rails lame.
Its been awhile since I've played through the series but pretty sure it was MGS4 that retconned Paramedic and Signit, not MGS3

Nah. It's fun to play but the plot is batshit nonsense. I much prefer how much more grounded the first game was. The tanker section of MGS2 and all of MGS1 is peak Kojima for me. After that it just got silly.

MGS3 has some of the best gameplay systems and I'd be there day 1 for a remake, but I don't think it's even the best MGS game, nevermind calling it a masterpiece.

Its alright. I prefer the first two games.

I remember watching every single MGS3 trailer up to release. Good stuff.

My experience with MGS3: clunky controls, terrible camera, unstable frame rate, everything looks piss-yellow and the camo system sucks because you have to pause the game all the time to change camo.

Also Kojima lied about the game, he promised an open-world forest with revolutionary AI but the forest turned out to be a bunch of corridors and the AI is worse than the previous game.
Let's not forget the stupidity of having to use the d-pad for sneaking.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but MGS2 ended with the twist that all of the Patriots listed had been dead for over 100 years, therefore leaving the mystery of the Patriots' identities open. So when MGS3 tells its story, what is it directly rewriting? To my memory, nothing.

A retcon is retroactive continuity, i.e. changing established fact. But MGS2 didn't establish anything for MGS3 to change, they just found a list of names - the Philosophers. Intentional misdirection by a top secret group. 3 fills in gaps, not changes things.

Again, I'm happy to be corrected if I'm wrong

I love the MGS games and MGS 1 is my favorite alongside 3. These 2 games are absolute masterpiece.

Snake Eater is so amazing. I remember beating over the weekend it was released. Spend all days on it and was blown away again and again.

Still have the steelbook case which has now some rust spot on it making very special for me

You can play them on PC with enough hardware...

Game was awesome but really only started to shine with Subsistance and the new camera.

I remember this game was, for me, the starting point for getting my gaming infos from the internet. Before that it was all magazines. Kinda bittersweet memory therefore.

I agree. They really should port the old HD version to current consoles in 4K. I hope they don't update the graphics because I like how it looks.

Went in for a replay of Subsistence.
The way the story perfectly blends action, romance, emotion & humour is just perfect. Naked Snake, Ocelot, The Boss, etc. are all fascinating characters. The gameplay. The fucking details. Memorable Boss fights (The End's one of the best fights ever). That ending still hits so fucking hard tho. Aged damn well. Still hasn't been topped in the realm of stealth games.

I would love it if I didn't hate stealth games.
