MGS3: Nintendogs Box Mini-Impressions (56k watch out)

For those of you out there who are thinking of buying this, here are some mini-impressions that will hopefully help in you're decision process . BTW, Everything is shown to you in video form, so you can see how they performed an action or move in those segments of the discs .

Disc 1 :

TheExtreme_Disc1.png

The entire disc is a playthrough on Extreme by a skilled player whose name I forget (its in the credits though). He(or she) does things that are quite amazing, tactics I had never seen before, or read about, obviously it may not be the same for you though . The way they dispose of The End was quite funny . I believe this player also holds the world record for the Foxhound rank speedrun . A nice thouch is they rewind the video after the player does a technique to get around gaurds, or dispose of a boss etc, so you can understand exactly how they did it .

Disc 2 :

TheVariation_Disc2.png

Basic & Advanced Action : A screenshot will explain it better I think, but first, there are again things shown in here that were new to me, had not seen before .

B_A.png

Weapon & Equipment : Basic & Advanced tactics for all of you're equipment, rifles, handguns, grenades, TNT, scope, sonar, Boxes etc etc etc .

Strategy with Area & Boss Battle : Like the first Disc, but using different techniques . The video in the "Strategy with Area" is not nearly as complete as the first disc, kind of like a highlight reel (lasts 13 mins) . The "Boss Battles" section is complete however, the entire battles .

Disc 3 :

TheIntermission_Disc3.png

Legacy of Patriot : Some hilarious outakes taken from gameplay throughout the game .

Secret Factor : Hidden R1 scenes, disposing of a certain boss early, secret gameplay tactics against bosses, gaurds & more .

Find out the Snake : A game where it appears you are supposed to find the snake on a 9x9 picture grid taken from various enviroments from MGS3 . Haven't played this much at all .

War Photograph Gallery : A selection of pictures (some funny) taken from the game . These aren't gameplay shots, as they have the camera placed in areas the game doesn't allow, must be from a development box .

Trail of the Snake : A camera runthrough of all the enviroments you traversed in the game . In various FPS's you can enable "noclip" to run around the game & move the camera around the enviroments as you please . Its like that . Non-Interactive though .

Extra Footage: Have you ever wanted to Karaoke to the Snake Eater song while a montage of cutscenes is shown ? Well now you can ! There are two versions . The first is with lyrics, and the second is just the music, no lyrics .

Disc 4 :

TheLovers_Disc4.png

Audio Commentary : Most (but not all unfortunately!) of the cutscenes played from the start of the game to the end, while Kojima, Shinkawa (and others?) comment . I wish I knew Japanese, I'd love to understand what they are saying . Its still worth having though as you get the cutscenes in good quality . As hinted to earlier, the only negative is the disc does not contain all of the cutscenes, maybe 75% ?

Poly-Demo Theatre : Same as above, minus the audio commentary .

Final Thoughts :

It is an enjoyable disc set, the only thing that would have made it tops is for Disc 4 to include all of the cutscenes but that isn't a huge deal . There is a whole of of content here which should provide you with laughs, enjoyment, and appreciation for the work that went into MGS3 .

On a quick side-note : I ordered this from Play-Asia who impressed me a whole lot with how well they packaged the shipment. This was my second overseas purchase ; The first was from CDJapan who dropped the ball and shipped my Silent Hill : Lost Memories in a flimsy as can be box thing, which arrived damaged, ugh . Anyhow, it was great to see it arrive so well protected .

Take Care

Here are a few examples of the quality of video from Disc 4 :

That is hot. Is the DVD only playable on PS2, or can it be played on a DVD player?

The Discs are Region 2 DVD Video (Western Europe, Japan, South Africa), so it could play on you're PS2 if its a Japanese Model :) . If not, look into a DVD player that is Region Free or something like DVD Region Free(software solution) for you're PC DVD Drive .

This looks pretty cool....and I didn't even like MGS3 that much. The import price is too hefty but seeing the speed runs would be pretty sweet.

Yeah, it would really be rotten of someone to do that. I sure wouldn't give them a tag of their choice if they did that, or anything.

I'm more interested in the cutscenes than the speed run :P

I've already seen a speedrun somewhere...it was in black and white though but still awesome

Holy shit that's amazing! Thanks for the detailed post. Must buy this...

Edit: For those who are wondering what is included in this box:

I thought you hated the MGS series. Am I thinking of someone else?

BTW, I haven't even played the game myself, but the design of the final boss battle, aside from being amazing on a technical level, is so brilliantly counterintuitive. I mean, a serene meadow full of flowers? That's the exact opposite of how most action movies, or most games with plots and villains (including the other MGS games) end: with a battle on top of a tower with a storm raging, or with a fight in an industrial site with flames all around the combatants, or... you get the idea.

If you don't know how to re-encode to Divx, you could just yank an entire Video_TS folder with DVD Decryptor. Not for this DVD set of course. But some other one that is in the public domain.

Wow, this is fantastic.

I'm a real MGS fanboy, this stuff is like a dream come true.

I really like MGS Substance with the Document of MGS stuff. That allowed you to watch cutscenes and view poly-models.

The video'd run thru is a great idea. I wish more games would have this.

I want a documentary of mgs3 or a making-of (like the one they included in the PAL-version of Sons of Liberty).

Probably not happening...:(

I dunno, I was pretty disappointed with the set. For $100 I expected a lot more.

Disc1 is cool if you like speedruns
Disc2 is ok I guess, but it's like "look at these different ways to beat the bosses!" when you really could've been finding them out yourself in the game.
Disc3 should've been cool with all the secret stuff from the game but the entire disc is like <20mins.
Disc4 is great since you get a HQ dvd version of the majority of the games cutscenes and the commentary is interesting...but NO CHAPTERS!?! I mean it's fine on my PC dvd player since I can just jump around but the damn thing is a single 1 hour 30 min clip which means if I just want to watch the ending on my standalone dvd player I have to FF for a long time. Also why couldn't they have just included all the scenes and then disc4 could've been a complete movie of the game's story scenes.

Also I was kinda expecting all those comedy clips Konami's been putting up in LQ to be on one of the discs in the set...but they're not there....wtf!? For $100 you kinda expect all the video stuff to be there.

It's a nice box to have for any MGS fan, but I think they're over-charging for the set and it doesn't feel 'complete' enough.

I'd like to see the translations for the commentary given by Hideo Kojima etc during the cut-scenes... someone on gamefaqs maybe?

After watching disc four again, I believe it contains about 70% of the cut-scenes from the game . I know some of you are interested in the Box for Disc 4 alone, so I thought I should add this bit of info . From memory the major ones missing are (there are more) :

1. Volgin giving Naked Snake the beatdown in the West Wing of Grozny Grad (shame, I loved that one) .
2. Sewer Jump .
3. Talking with Eva at the top of the mountain .
4. Volgin/Eva/Boss/Ocelot outside of the Grozny Grad Jail after #3 above (loved this one too, sigh).

If anyone has any requests for cut-scene screenshots, just let me know .

Here are a few more screenshots from the great ending sequences :

I'm still very confused. WHAT IS THIS??? Was it officially made by Konami? Is the like the Document of MGS2 equivilant for MGS3? Is it coming out in the US?

"1. Volgin giving Naked Snake the beatdown in the West Wing of Grozny Grad (shame, I loved that one) ."

WTF? That's probably the best cutscene in the entire game just because of how incredibly brutal it looks.

Cap the scene where the flower field turns blood red after Snake beats The Boss.

PAL gamers pretty much get "Disc 4" of this box for free, and it includes ALL the cutscenes and the ability to zoom and pan. Shouldn't it also look better since it would be running in real-time and not compressed in MPEG2? Unless the video on this DVD is anamorphic widescreen, which I'm almost sure it isn't.

The only advantages I can think of here are 1) The ability to pause, rewind, and go frame-by-frame. 2) Progressive scan, if your TV+DVD player can do it... And 3) The audio commentary, which is worthless if you don't understand Japanese. The lack of chapter stops really sucks.... Anyone know if Demo Theater in PAL MGS3 lets you select which cutscene to view or does it play in the same fashion (with mission logs in between) like in MGS1 and Twin Snakes?

Yes you can select any cutscene you want to view in the PAL version but only the ones that you have unlocked. You have to play it multiple times to get the other cutscenes and once you've unlocked them all you get the EVA peepshow

I would really love to get to see this. I sure hope they bring it out in the U.S. like they did with the Document of MGS2. I don't know if I can wait that long though. :(

I have a couple of questions about the set. How much of this set is in Japanese? I know the audio commentary is, but what about the rest? Is there an English subtitle option anywhere? From the screen caps it appears that most of the menus are in English and Japanese. Is this the case throughout the set? I basically want to know how import friendly it is. Thanks for the help. :)

The only things that are in English are the Menus as you mentioned and the Karaoke Versions of Snake Eater . There isn't an English sub-title option unfortunately . With that said however, since everything is shown to you in video form, there really isn't much guess work as to what they are trying to convey .

The Box does come with a 190p Book, all in Japanese so you would be missing out on that as well as the audio commentary . I'd imagine that given some time all of this will be translated .. or so we can hope :D .

Thanks. :) I am mostly interested in this set for the videos anyway, so I guess there is nothing that makes that portion of the set an unfriendly import.

About the speed run on the first disc. Do they show a complete run from beginning to end? Is it a no-save, no-damage run? How long does it take the player to complete the run, and what is his/her name? I know this is a lot of questions, but the answers could make or break my buying decision. Thaks again for the help. :)

You lucky sons-of-bitches, and I mean that in the nicest way :) I don't understand why Konami would release this and not include all of the cut scenes in a demo theater manner? It boggles the mind.

Well folks, I've placed my order with Play-Asia and the set should be with me next week.

Just a note about MGS2, MGS2 Substance and MGS3.

All three of these titles work with the Blaze VGA adaptor. The run in 480p and look pretty gorgeous. After playing them in 480p it is very hard to go back to the interlaced picture.

There are some caveats, the picture does not quite fit the screen and you will have to be able to adjust the picture to shift it left and expand it. These are pretty standard controls on most VGA monitors/plasmas.

Some in game effects like chaff grenades use the interlace mode, so they don't look right in 480p. Sometimes the picture also jumps.

I found that MGS2 Substance and MGS3 worked best. The Document of MGS stuff worked fine and it made a real difference seeing the poly models and cut scenes in 480p.

It's a shame they couldn't work out a way to get the game to run in 480p without using this hack.

Is there ANY news of a documentary of mgs3 or a making-of similar to the one released with the PAL-sons of liberty?

MentalNoiz......anyone? Please help me. I don't want to spend $130 on this without knowing a little more about it.

The run is complete, they show how to do every area . They do fast-forward at times when there isn't anything going on, like for example running .

After watching the credits of the Foxhound run again, there are two players listed for "gameplay" . I may have been mistaken above when I said this run is from the world record holder ; why would there be two names listed ? Anyhow here is a screenshot of their names :

ExtremeCredits.png

I believe it is a no-damage run, as I do not ever remember the player getting hurt at anytime . They do not show the final rank screen for some strange reason, so I could not tell you exactly how long it took unfortunately . The video runtime is about 1 hour 36 mins .

If you have any more questions, just let me know .

Thanks for responding. :) I was away from civilization for a few days, so I was unable to check back here until today.

I do have a few more questions.

Is it possible to watch the whole speed run from beginning to end as one long movie, or are all of the areas and bosses broken up in to short segments that you can access from a menu?

Could you watch the part of the motorcycle escape sequence where you have to shoot a log in your path while the hover guards are chasing you? If this part is completed without recieving any damage to Snake, I would be very interested in knowing the details of the strategy used. Generally when you turn your back to shoot the log, you get shot once or twice, so I am curious to know how they manage to get by this part unscathed.

How often do they fast forward during the speed run vid? Basically what I am looking for here is your rough estimate of what their total playtime would be if the whole run was shown at normal speed.

How long does it take for them to defeat The End?

Lastly, I would like to know where I can buy this for a good price. Play-Asia is no longer an option, as they appear to be out of stock. They DID have it a while ago for $130 dollars, but I don't want to pay that much if I can help it. So if you or anyone else knows of a place that has it in stock for cheap I would be grateful for your help. :)

Thanks again MentalNoiz. You have been very helpful. This is the only place I've found on the net that I have been able to get detailed information about the boxset.

P.S.

If anyone here speaks Japanese, I have a question about the screenshot MentalNoiz posted just above me. How do you say and spell these names in English?

Amazon JP has it for 10,290 yen (approx 97$) before shipping costs.. [edit--]But it looks like they won't ship to foreign locations for this item, sorry.

You may want to consider asking a place like Nippon-Export to see if they'll stock it.

Both, if you take a look at the top of this thread for a picture of the Disc 1 Menu, you will see "All Play" which plays it as one long movie . You also can select which area you want by going to "Virtuous Mission" or "Operation Snake Eater" , which then goes to another sub-menu where you can select sub-areas . However those sections are all in Japanese .

The player has the Cold War Camo & Splitter Face paint on and seems to wait until two of the Hover craft gaurds go over Snake's head(placing them up in front of the motorbike) . Then turns around and is therefore facing them again , then proceeds to use the Rocket Launcer to blast away the log . Here is a screenshot :

I'd guess maybe ... 8% ? of the entire speed run they use fast-forward. It is mainly used when there is nothing going on IE running as I mentioned earlier, or when they have shown you how to do something and it wouldn't make sense to waste video showing the same thing repeatedly . At no point did I think to myselff "Why did they fast foward past that part!?" ; its all there .

Its hard to nail down the exact video runtime honestly, thankfully you asked for an estimate, so I'll say anywhere from 1:35 to 2:00 .

How long does it take for them to defeat The End?

2 minutes 20 seconds :lol

I believe NCS has it in stock here, but you may want to call to make sure .

No problem, if you have any other questions, ask away . Could a mod/admin change the Nintendogs part of the topic back to Extreme :lol ?
