With all due respect to MGS3 (and in reference to the original post, which suggests that both games have great pacing), I think its pacing is a problem, especially at first. At this point, you shouldn't have to play a game for five hours to start enjoying yourself; I don't think most people would find the early going in MGS3 to be particularly entertaining, since you're mostly just listening to long-winded exposition and not doing anything too exciting gameplay-wise. But I agree that the two games share a lot in common...for example, RE4 seems to consciously lift the codec conversations from MGS, but purposely keeps them very short. RE4 also has some amazing cutscenes, but they're interactive, beyond just getting to look down at someone's boobs at a couple of moments. If MGS3 played anywhere near as good as RE4, it would have been a game that people outside of the core MGS fanbase could have really gotten into. I love the MGS3 story and like much of the gameplay, but it tried hard to cater only to its fans. Not that there's anything wrong with that. It just means RE4 is going to be a better game for just about anyone who hasn't already played MGS3.
