MGSV Alternate E3 Gameplay Demo

Clearly "normal", those guards would have spotted him 30+ more meters away if it was on hard.

Ground zeros on hard, the guards see nearly double distance from what I can tell.

Yeah, hard should be lots of fun. I really liked how the enemy vision behaved in GZ on hard mode. If you're going for a true stealth gameplay approach I'd recommend it, if it's anything like GZ. A lot of the items shown off in the trailer are too cheesy for my playstyle but I'll still use them every now and then, especially in free roam or NG+ :) The beauty is really in how you play the game, and you can do that in so many different ways ...

Quiet's animations are so awesome.

Same effect, different ways of achieving it.

Humour me a moment:

Let's take what happens in MGS as the rules of its universe for a minute. The MGS universe is one where magazines or just posters featuring pictures of just about anything (mainly beautiful women) are capable of distracting guards to the point that they will not notice anything else around them.

You have no problem with that, right? Even though sometimes you just have to show a hot lady on the TV screen of a tiny Metal Gear to distract people... or that, heck, some magazines can make people feel specific overwhelming emotions. Regardless, you are okay with the effect that magazines and locker posters and what-not can have on people, yah...? Because otherwise, I don't know how you put up with the series this long! :D

Okay, so we also know that in the MGS universe, every cardboard box is capable of hiding a person in it. You're okay with that too, yeah? Not too unrealistic....? ;)

So let's take the next logical step: In the MGS universe, it doesn't take the kind of genius who put cameras and telephones into one hand-sized box to realise that you can combine the properties of magazines/locker posters (which inherently distract randy men) and cardboard boxes (which hide sneaky men) into one handy device. It is, in the context of the MGS universe, a logical evolution. It is such a logical evolution of the technology that it would be unrealistic (in the context of the MGS universe) to not combine those two technologies.

YOU'RE WELCOME :D

I don't know why you develop at lenght on that aspect.
Visually it's pushing it on the goofiness even for metal gear, especially the fact that the thing let your breathing movement shows but whatever, it's the functionnal part that interest me most, you hide in it, the guard is lured, you have nothing to worry about and bam cqc.
Seems pretty unbalanced.

I don't know what they can do about it, if the guards get accustomed to it, it become useless.
The one answer known about the decoy is enemies using it, but for the sexy cardbox i don't see it.

Because I found it an amusing thought and enjoyed writing it out. Lighten up.

You have no idea how balanced the game is, so your concerns are moot at this point.

You initially said you had an issue with the effect the box caused, I showed you a similar device that has been in the majority of the games. You then decided one was more realistic than the other, even though they both create massively unrealistic effects, forgetting that, for as many concessions to "reality" Metal Gear does make, it is always telling the player and showing the player that it is a game first and foremost. That's what items like these are for.

If you don't want to use them the game is robust enough (if not designed precisely) to accommodate your individual playstyle. I doubt the developers expect every player to use every single item in every single playthrough.

A lot of the items are goofy but you don't have to use them :) You can play towards your liking in this game, and I think that on hard mode while restricting yourself to certain items will prove to be a challenging and rewarding experience. My first play-through will likely be very traditional metal gear - tactical stealth with a hint of goofy, but I'm super excited to play with the more ridiculous items (some old & some new).

Also just a note regarding the sexy pictures: back in my counter-strike source days some people would use sexy pics as their spray and they were valid distraction techniques that often paid off :D

Probably not.

Should be fun tho

It will be well balanced if you played the way it's intended. I love having all these choices but there is still part of me that's angry that only one playstyle gets graded highly. All this cool stuff and you will still having to play like any other metal gear game to get high ranks and rewards.

Now, it's going to add a layer of depth we haven't seen before and you could easily get another 2-3 playthroughs out of it and never play the same way.

I can see a couple player got fooled with sexy magazine or poster, imagine you got into a room and there are a bunch of locker and one of them had sexy girl poster on it. Personally, I think I'm gonna check it out, thinking it's another one of Kojima's easter egg like in previous mgs, you got close enter first person view to see it clearly, then suddenly the locker opens and there's a soldier inside waiting to ambush you.

Really, I think that will genuinely got some player.

Yep.
I read you can grab posters from enemy bases so that's probably going to be a thing. Or taking it could trigger a booby trap.

I understand your advice, but I said earlier that a balanced item would be better than personally limiting its use.
After all, the cardbox in mgs didn't have this problem.
And to reiterate, being goofy is the least of my problem but here that lead to items that look pretty powerful.

Yea I only played through GZ the one time and couldn't remember if there was a health bar or not. I'm still gonna play the shit out of this game, though.

The game is infinitely better with regenerating health.

I don't always praise the regenerating health system, but when I do, it's Metal Gear Solid
(or Red Dead Redemption)
.

Brilliant!, I need this game now!

Anyone know where in the UK can I order the collector's edition? it's out of stock in game.

Kojima has spoken at length about The Phantom Pain's difficulty, saying that the game was far too hard and that they had to give the players a lot of tools (eg Reflex Mode, buffed Carboard Box) to help them manage.

I'd say it's a pretty safe bet the game will be well balanced despite the handful of things that seem really OP. Also we've seen nothing from mid-late game – things might get really tough later on, and we'll have seen nothing of it. All we've seen is stuff from the first quarter or so.

The ration system was archaic. I do wish they would have evolved the medical system from MGS3 though. Having to do some field dressing or more involved process if you take a huge amount of damage. Could do some cool things like calling in a medivac and playing as one of the recruited soldiers sent in to recover Boss. Would make him less of an unstoppable 80's action hero which I'd prefer.

As mostly PC guy until Wii-PS3 era, my first one was MGSIV and I enjoyed it a lot, even with the long cut-scenes. Got MGS V GZ and played the main mission, love it, love that it is 60fps. The game looks great, will probably not look like the graphics powerhouses, but I think this is a good approach some games could consider, don't go super crazy with the graphics, focus on gameplay and 1080p/60fps, at least I would be pretty satisfied.

That's true, However graphics wise the MGS series isn't known for pushing the boundaries on that end but rather on the gameplay.

I really miss MGS3's system, too. If someone mods it into TPP on the PC I will insta-double-dip for that even though my computer could never run it.

The regen system just fits better with MGSV's very streamlined design style, overall. I love that idea about your second life being to recover Snake with one of your recruits. That's brilliant. Kojima would never do it, too convoluted, but it's absolutely brilliant.

This is an issue with games that include tons of detail like MGS.

The more I see, the more I know they can do and the more I question why they don't read my GAF account or consult me for game design.

I'm sure this has been discussed in previous thread (not sure if it's new to this video), but the chopper's name being
Pequod
has some pretty cool story implications.

I'm glad rations are gone. The previous games were far too easy because of it. Including MGS3 with it's life med.

Also, in MGS5 after you take so much damage you have to find a safe spot and hold triangle for snake to heal his wounds. The health spray in GZ left you really open.

Nothing crazy like MGS3, but there is some kind of limb damage in this game where if your arm's injured, you can't aim, leg injury means you can't run, etc. and you need to find some cover and hold down a specific button for a while to heal that injury. It was stated in some gameplay impressions. There are summaries of info on Metal Gear Informer and YongYea's videos.

Your medivac idea sounds great and intense but you need to be more specific with it, like if that idea would apply in story-related missions or would it only be side missions.

What?

Remember MGS2, it was light years ahead of any game in terms of graphics and detail at the time of its release. It was the first truly next-gen game at the time and a look into the future of gaming (graphics, gameplay).

MGS1 and MGS4 were also the best looking game for years on consoles when they came out.

I don't see it as a good thing to do the game balance ourselves and limiting the use of items when they could be better implemented.
For exemple, the decoy is interesting but it has to break the guard alert on sight to work and they're extremely gullible about it, as seen in a demo gunfire sequence. The cardbox sexy trap is also just shocking at the level of disbelief needed to understand how guards can get so much in awe with it.
But anyway, it's the level design that I'm most cautious of.
For now there's better camp design in something like far cry 4, I wasn't expecting it.

HAHAHAHA, this is MGS not CoD. The humor regarding how ridiculous a cardboard box would look on the battlefield and as a stealth tool is part of MGS humor.

You know LD, we PS4 owners are your brethren.

It seems the devs are giving the player tools to decide how difficult they want to make the game.

No, I'm not going to use the box to distract guards, nor am I going to use reflex mode, and I'll be six feet under if someone ever catches me with the chicken hat thing.

Personally, if the audio mixing is good enough and you can hear guards nearby walking and talking I might feel brave enough to turn off marking. But then again, I feel like marking is a way for the player to put themselves in the roll of Big Boss, who is a master soldier and has amazing situational awareness. I wish instead of seeing people through walls and knowing their exact movement when they are out of site, you would just get a "general area" of where the patrol can/will be.

Both! You?

I'm really excited for the PC release because I'm sure people will find ways to keep the multiplayer features of the game around for a long time to come! (Hopefully, this means MGO, because honestly, this component seems like it will be DOA. ;_;)

QUOOOOOOOODAI!

PC, I don't own a ps4, waiting for it to have at least 10 exclusives I want to play + I just got a 980ti hybrid for 840 euros so yeah that it for big gaming related purchases for this quarter. Also I won't feel bad waiting for it since I'm traveling until it comes out kekekeke.

Glad to see you are getting it on PC, I will finally be able to enter you
r mother base.

Now that rations are gone, what was the majority opinion regarding the stress level meter from MGS IV? Since it's the only Metal Gear I played outside of GZ, I thought it was a unique, if cumbersome, element to the game.

Oh cool, must have missed that.

I'd apply it to everything, given the chance. Make it have serious consequences both inside and outside the main story. Like in GZ if Boss failed and required evac, Chico and Paz would be moved, security completely revamped and remixed. Morale losses and resource strain from the rescue OP, especially if friendly forces are lost in the process. Understandably not within the Kojima vision or fulfill most player fantasy but something I would enjoy personally. Gives more weight to the missions.

Please tell me the time acceleration thing in the video is part of the gameplay, if there is one thing I hate about stealth games is having to wait eons to see enemy patterns.

Its weird because in the video, the fast forwarded parts even have a sort of special effect that goes well with the rest of the UI, hopefully it is part of the game.

Ayyyyy lmao! For sure, man, that is awesome!! Sick graphics card you got, too-- can't wait to play, yo!

God damnit guys! Now I won't be able to use the sneaking suit because all I see is the undulating dick every time BB runs.
