The Windows tiles and icon design language is a lot less confused than iOS7 and obviously Android garbage. Strange times...Microsoft's making the clean design and Apple is dominating the software library.
Its a lot more confused than either competitor.

The simplified icons really doesn't work with the full color photos. I don't they should allow people use full color photo. That completelty lost the idea behind the original design.

I hope you have used windows phone as a daily driver for at least a week or so.

It's alright to prefer iOS or Android's design language, but to be so adamant about it indicates more of a lack of familiarity with the OS than actual hands-on discussion.

Especially that Music tile there. That's hot garbage. it's one-tile that acts like a 8 mini tiles with a picture that sits in the middle. EW.

In general, the use of both simple icons and photography works really well in Microsoft's design language. And it's very much in line with Swiss style design, which provided the basis for the original design.

Despite not being particularly famous for it, one important part of the Swiss Style is its remarkable use of photography.

The windows phone display is boring and will never look good. Eventually it is easy to use once you get used to the icons, which is different from phone to phone mind you......

I do like the search-ability when you switch to the right screen though.

Android is still the most optimal and best looking once I go through the pains of setting it up.

How mine looks as well. 95% of icons are small except for would-be widgets.

I have 3 banners, 8 small icons, and 6 normal sized ones. layered around to spread out information, and give emphasis to the news/sports headlines.

With a three column screen, I probably would have 4 mini-tiles, tons of normal-sized tiles, and flitter big banners around.

Looks like MS got 8500 design patents with the purchase. That they own outright. The rest they will license.

That looks like a board game.

This is a terrible example of how the interface looks. It's only as good or bad as the user decides to make it. Why anybody would have their home screen looking like this is beyond me.

I used Android for a good while and have interacted with iOS enough to have a rounded experience of them all. In my opinion it's hard to top the WP8 interface for just being able to pin the items you want and get so much information at a glance. Widgets on Android come close, but they're design not being uniform makes many of them hit or miss.

Edit: duplicate tiles in that picture?

picture you quoted is kind of a Jobs "freedom from porn" kind of argument; sure you could make your Windows Phone screen look like a disaster, but that's your fault.
I was under the impression that the picture is what will appear on promotional materials for the new Lumia, in which case either Microsoft or Nokia are purposely advertising a disaster.

Anyway I don't hate the tile design like some in this thread, I just thought it would be funny to reply to the poster I quoted with that image. I personally think that 3 column tile image is hideous but I'll wait to see it in person before writing it off as the further destruction of Metro.

US Justice Department Approved.

The US Department of Justice (DoJ) and Federal Trade Commission (FTC) have signed off on a $7.2 billion deal allowing Microsoft to purchase Nokia’s Devices and Services unit. Shareholders of the Finnish smartphone maker recently approved the deal, which will allow Microsoft to ship its own Windows Phones with or without the Lumia branding, and today the FTC has granted early termination on the deal.

EU Approves. Done deal

The European Union has cleared Microsoft’s deal to purchase Nokia’s Devices and Services unit. In a statement released today, the Commission notes that the “overlap of the two companies' activities in this area is minimal and several strong rivals, such as Samsung and Apple will continue to compete with the merged entity.”

Microsoft quickly applauded the move. As a Microsoft spokesperson told The Verge: "We look forward to the date when our partners at Nokia will become members of the Microsoft family, and are pleased that the European Commission has cleared the deal without conditions." The European approval comes just days after the US Department of Justice also gave Microsoft’s deal the go ahead, and paves the way for the merger to complete early next year.

That went well.

https://news.microsoft.com/2015/07/08/microsoft-announces-restructuring-of-phone-hardware-business/

Microsoft has now confirmed rumors that it plans to lay off 7,800 employees, most of which will come from its phone division.

These new workforce reductions are in addition to the 18,000 Microsoft employees that were laid off in the past 12 months. Microsoft also announced it would record a one time impairment charge of $7.6 billion due to a write down of the company's acquisition of Nokia's Devices and Services division in 2014. There will also be a restructuring charge of approximately $750 million to $850 million. Microsoft stated:

"Microsoft will record a charge in the fourth quarter of fiscal 2015 for the impairment of assets and goodwill in its Phone Hardware segment, related to the NDS business. This charge has no impact on cash flow from operations and is nondeductible for income tax purposes. Based on the new plans, the future prospects for the Phone Hardware segment are below original expectations. Accordingly, the company concluded that an impairment adjustment of its Phone Hardware segment assets and goodwill of approximately $7.6 billion is required."
Microsoft expects that the majority of layoffs will be completed by the end of 2015, and all of them will have been made by the end of the company's current fiscal year, which ends on June 30, 2016.
