Microsoft buying Nokia Devices and Services

Nokia has been a mess since iPhone came
Windows Phone was just the final thrust

Stephen Elop should be rewarded the CEO position at Microsoft

Step one: Force the board of directors to hire an ex exployee as the CEO through some shady fucking tactics

Step two: Force Nokia to become WP exclusive and since WP is a disaster make Nokia completely depended on Microsoft moneyhats

Step three: After Nokia is completely weakened and helpless buy it since they have no other option

Microsoft ladies and gentlemen, the corporation many in this forum trust.

LOL

So Nokia was all "Nooo, they try to ruin us from the outside, we better let them ruin us from the outside and also from the inside"?

They let themselves be bullied by Microsoft and its shady tactics and paid the price. It's simple.

Btw it looks like Elop is being rewarded heftily for running Nokia into the ground. Disgusting. If that isn't proof that this fuck was a trojan horse nothing will be for you.

Skype cost MS more than Nokia's handset division, kina funny :p
google buying Motorola for 12.5 billion is even more amusing, though they did buy whole of the company and got its patents... which so far not very useful for them. MS sounds like won't own any of Nokia's gold mine of patents? mentions licensing only.

They are getting 8500 design patents, so whatever that means I guess.

edit: looks like a 10 year license on the utility patents, which can be converted into a perpetual deal.

But Nokia was in a downward spiral long before Elop so

Download Visual Studio and the WPSDK. Pay the annual developer fee, develop your app and then submit to the store. What barriers are you talking about?

Mostly for patents would be my guess.

1) You can only develop on Windows 8 pro. For some reason they have excluded the vast majority of the Windows install base (all 7 and 8 home edition).

2) If you want to publish as a company instead of as an individual the number of hoops that have to be jumped through is stupid and makes even Apple look like a pleasure to work with.

I set up a company with some friends recently to make small apps and we initially hoped to exploit the underneurished wp market, but we have decided to drop it for now and focus on Android and iOS.

Android is of course super easy to get started on, but even iOS is pretty easy as long as you have access to OSX.

Of course that should not deter big players, but for smaller one with less resources it prevents it from being first choice.

And he worked absolute wonders to reverse the downward trend, didn't he?

Certainly could have been worse outcomes after having their pants so far down their ankles in regards to smartphones.

So they decided to reward the CEO that accelerated its downward spiral instead of turning things around?

lol, accelerated? They were headed into the shitter at pretty fast rate before Elop arrived.

I think it is better to have a phone brand that is singular as opposed to a brand running a brand.

iPhone is synonymous with Apple. But Nokia Lumia running Windows Phone by Microsoft is a branding nightmare.

Windows Phone by Microsoft is much better. They can clean the whole line up and have a better more focused position to market from.

I'm pretty hype about this. Been an Android user for years, but Nokia was always tempting. I absolutely love the aesthetic of their phones and hope it propagates throughout the rest of the company. Imagine if the sale went through a year earlier...we might have had a Lumia-inspired Xbox 1.

I will never forgive Elop for cutting the legs off of the Nokia N9 almost immediately after its announcement.

The Lumia line features a lot of great phones, but I will never buy a cell phone that is a Windows phone.

Don't worry, you won't have that problem in a couple of years, thanks to Microsoft's micromanaging they'll ruin Nokia as soon as they get their hands on it.

It's a shame, I used to be a big Nokia fan.

You do realize that Elop joined about halfway through that graph right?

Yes, I even have it written there.

Doesn't change the fact that he took over @ 8€ and brought it down to 3€.

Not exactly a result that you would be happy with of a CEO (despite MS of course).

With the Nokia deal, Microsoft become a juggernaut in patents for smart devices

The facts and numbers themselves are quite revealing and we’ll list them below for you to ponder:
• The Microsoft-Nokia deal comes well before 2014 recommitment date
• Acquisition grows OEM opportunity; Continue existing partnerships
• Microsoft will use offshore cash with no impact on ability to reduce capital to shareholders
• Microsoft is acquiring over 8,500 design patents; ownership of Lumia and Asha brands
• Microsoft is acquiring more than 60 patents with third parties e.g. Qualcomm
• Microsoft is acquiring 30,000 utility patents and patent applications
• 10 year license to use Nokia brand on feature phones
• Microsoft will have the most cost-effective patent arrangements for smart devices, including deals with: Samsung, Qualcomm, IBM, Motorola Mobility, Motorola Solutions, LG, Nortel, and Kodak
• Phone device R&D remains centered in Finland
• Nokia sales team intact
• Acquisition approval in EU, US, China, India, Brazil, Russia, Canada and others

In essence, Microsoft is getting a whole lot for the $7.1 billion dollar purchase. With a streamlined production process, access to Nokia’s rich portfolio of patents and combined with Microsoft’s market might, this new formation should rival Apple and Samsung—and that’s exactly Microsoft’s goal.

Great move by both companies, MS will handle Nokia carefully, they want to be a big player in smartphones more than anything else these days.

You didn't to begin with, nice edit though.

Like I said, there were worse possible outcomes, lol. Buyout was certainly the most likely scenario given where they were headed. Took them 2 or 3 years longer than I figured though.

Before Elop became a CEO Nokia didn't even consider selling itself. They had problems but also long-term plans to recover. I don't know what you're talking about.

I.. I don't even...

Like clockwork.
Poor Nokia, you had a good run.

Everyone knew this day would come after Elop and the MS deals.
Pretty much as predicted.

This makes sense for Nokia. They lost money on phones. AFAIk they make money on mapping & networks. Makes sense to cast off the part that is losing you money and regroup on the parts that are.

Of course, every company has long-term plans, and those plans rarely include being bought out because you've gone down the shitter, lol. I'm sure BlackBerry had a 10 year plan 3 years ago that foresaw their position being better than it is now.

Interesting what they plan to do with extra 7 billion dollars.

holy fuck , ms about to try and kill the iphone? for reals this time, no more pussy footing around, shit Nokia is a good make, this could work, or it could be a waste of money that now has killed off a once great company... ohh well

Almost all of the old cellphone manufacturers have now been bought

HP buys Palm
Sony buys Ericksson
Google buys Motorolla
Microsoft buys Nokia

Apple buys RIM?

Actually Ericsson is alive and well, they are the worlds largest network management company with over 40% of the worlds mobile traffic going through their technology.

Yay, something else MS can drive into the ground

Skype was their last purchase and they're doing a pretty good job with that.

Way I see it, when Microsoft buy something they seem truly passionate about they're very careful, when they're not being arrogant they make amazing products.

I think comparing this to Danger and ignoring Skype is disingenuous.

Skype is software. They didn't touch it, their devices division will destroy this

The comparison still stands, they bought Skype because it worked, they didn't change anything because they didn't need to and they're reaping the benefits. You can apply that to Nokia, they have a winning formula (or as good as it's gonna get).

Yeah, they aren't going to fuck with Asha. They might start messing with the Lumia's, but MS wanted them for their infrastructure and device executive experience mainly. Different from what they wanted Danger for.

In a somewhat unrelated note, this purchase clearly cements Microsoft and their commitment on being "a devices and services company". How many people still think they'll sell the Xbox division?
Yes, I'm sure a gigantic purchase in the entertainment branch of Microsoft will convince shareholders that wanted to get rid off that branch that they need to keep it.

Are you reading what's being posted? Everything will stay the same. Elop will still be running things. Only difference is that Microsoft is the owner. From what was announced it looks like the Skype deal in that Microsoft will let things run business as usual.

it shouldn't be long till the dual core cpu's windows runs on drops low enough in price and power that windows phone couldn't simply replace asha
