In a somewhat unrelated note, this purchase clearly cements Microsoft and their commitment on being "a devices and services company". How many people still think they'll sell the Xbox division?

But back on topic, Windows Phones (thanks to Nokia) are slowly but surely catching on: Record share for Windows phone

Too bad we'll never see Nokia hardware running stock Android, but hey, cool for MS.

Hope we see the Win8 platform evolve into a real competitor.

Here's to hoping that something (good) actually comes from this acquisition.

I hope it doesn't end up similar to the Danger situation.

Unfortunately I'm pretty tied into Google's ecosystem (Gmail, and all of my music is in the cloud through Google Music).

Since Google isn't playing nice with MS, I can't make the switch. That's too bad because Windows Phone seems pretty cool.

Unless MS can make $20 and $50 WP8, they are not going to be able to sell the WP8 phone to Africans and other 3rd world countries.

In fact, Microsoft's licensing deal for the Nokia brand doesn't include future Lumias — Nokia as a smartphone brand is effectively dead, as Microsoft takes the lineup in-house.

WTF? Just now seeing this. No more Nokia branding or lumias? Ugh.

I don´t think there is much profit in $20 and $50 phones so MS won't focus on those markets at least at those prices, they will try to sell and to lower the price of phones such as the 520 as much as they can but in reality those markets will be for OSes such as Firefox OS and the likes

The app situation will improve, but WP8 will never be the first choice for devs (especially smaller devs) as long as MS puts so many barriers on developing for their platform.

Download Visual Studio and the WPSDK. Pay the annual developer fee, develop your app and then submit to the store. What barriers are you talking about?

Why would ms want to buy BB?

Mostly for patents would be my guess.

this is a smart move by ms, having someone that actually knows how to make these devices.

nokia has the hardware, ms just needs to polish the software

so the name Nokia is dead? Like if MS would release a phone, It would be called windows phone or MS phone? Im confused.

the Verge:

As part of the agreement, Nokia CEO Stephen Elop is stepping aside; he's now leading Microsoft's Devices team

So now he's in charge of Xbox One? Interesting times ahead, although I have a hunch that might be temporary until he becomes Microsoft's new CEO.

Step one: Force the board of directors to hire an ex exployee as the CEO through some shady fucking tactics

Step two: Force Nokia to become WP exclusive and since WP is a disaster make Nokia completely depended on Microsoft moneyhats

Step three: After Nokia is completely weakened and helpless buy it since they have no other option

Microsoft ladies and gentlemen, the corporation many in this forum trust.

In what way did they actually force Nokia to do anything?

Didn't Nokia become WP exclusive before Elop moved over there, though?

Nokia will continue as a separate company focusing on networks, navigation and future technologies. Obviously MS can't use that name on phones.

Wow, didn't realize this.

If Microsoft can't use the Nokia or Lumia branding this suddenly seems like a massive waste of money to me.

So, I wonder if all of the partnerships will remain in place for things like the HERE Maps and what not?

Yeah, losing the Nokia name recognition isn't a good thing (outside of the US).

This could potentially go two ways I think... Microsoft, unlike Google with Motorola, might actually do something with Nokia and create some really great WP8+ products for the market. Or they could do a Google and do absolutely nothing with the talent, engineering and design nous they just purchased and letting Nokia just flounder in the wind.

Really hoping for the former... Nokia contrary to popular belief nowadays do make some good products.

Certain big Microsoft shareholders that also had a pretty big share in Nokia (10% iirc) threatened to sell all their stocks if Nokia doesn't hire Elop.

No.

So Nokia was all "Nooo, they try to ruin us from the outside, we better let them ruin us from the outside and also from the inside"?

Wow, didn't realize this.

They can use Lumia branding, only Nokia branding will be missing

I went through this whole thing and not one camera and Kinect post. Bravo ladies and gentleman.

On to this thread. A big fucking wow from me. Definitely didn't see that coming. I'm entrenched with Android but I'm moving away to getting all my stuff on a tablet. As far as a phone, I'll keep an open mind about this.

Skype cost MS more than Nokia's handset division, kina funny :p
google buying Motorola for 12.5 billion is even more amusing, though they did buy whole of the company and got its patents... which so far not very useful for them. MS sounds like won't own any of Nokia's gold mine of patents? mentions licensing only.

Or MS will do what they did to Danger after they brought it for 500 million dollars.
