Microsoft confirms 12 TF RDNA 2 for the Xbox Series X

Bring on da GPUs baby

giphy.gif
They soon first focus on improving the drivers. I have a r5700xt myself but it will be the last amd graphic card. Problem with black screens, freesync flickering, stuttering in games, freezes, etc.

For someone who's going Xbox-only next gen, I hope PS5 can match the specs. Mostly so I don't have to read/hear bitching about one or another console's superiority for years to come.

Just 12?
I guess we can expect Soony to announce something now it's official

Yeah, I wanted a quantum computer for next-gen. Classical computing is dead!

But nah, I hope Sony starts talking soon too. Not a fan of the quietness of late from them.

Told you all, guns blazing 💪.

About 14 TF GCN old.

Actually more like 15.163TF GCN, and that's with RDNA1 upper-end efficiency in mind (25%).

Assuming RDNA2 is closer to, say, 30%, it's more like almost 16TF GCN (15.834TF actual).

And? We already knew that. When I see them on shelves available at prices that truly undercut nvidia and make upgrading make sense, then I'll be psyched

If the xbox series x gpu falls one step or so below the top end, and they're still pricing them within $50 of nvidia's cards for the comparable model, then Microsoft's machine is going to look very, very attractive.
The consoles will get Custom built GPU. Who said Amd can't release something better than 5700xt for the consoles and RDNA2 cards for PC sometime later?

Realistically, of course AMD can beat a two year old Nvidia GPU. That's the sad thing, that they need two years to beat them. The RTX 3080 will come out weeks if not days after Big Navi and absolutely crush it. But to not expect AMD to be able to beat a 2080, that's ridiculous.

Where did I say they couldn't beat it? I have no doubt they will but if rdna 2 and big Navi are truly to save AMD's gpu efforts, they'll need to the avoid the the rapidly diminishing returns and high heat/power consumption that have made any high end amd card a slippery proposition (recent history).

As I mentioned, there have been widely circulated reports that amd was struggling to get big Navi down to manageable power draws and had to readjust initial projections

Whether or not that's still the case is an open question because we've not seen anything yet.

I'd love to be proven massively wrong so I can upgrade my 2080 in a couple years and get a 25% or better bump at a price that's cheaper than the $600 I paid

Oh you sweet summer child. Here's how it goes down depending on the PS5 specs:

If they're less: "Well the PS5 performs better anyway because it's coded to the metal or something. Plus PS5 has better exclusives."
If they're close to the same: "PS5 has a slight advantage here you can see from this multiplatform game that we get, on average, 1 fps more." (Bonus points: They'll ignore the fact that other aspects of the game run better on Xbox)
If they're absolutely identical (same CPU, same innards): "Can your Xbox Series X play Horizon: Zero Dawn 2 or Creepy Waifu Simulator 16? Didn't think so."
If they're more: "Only idiots buy Xbox so they can jerk each other off while playing Call of Duty". (Bonus points: they'll ignore the Xbox's other strengths and try to convince you that PSNow is just as good as Game Pass)

If this is 500 Euros, i be coming back to xbox full time. Sony will have to match it for me to continue with them. The new xbox is a monster and most of the games i play are third party.

People will make something up out of thin air even if the specs are close.

But it'll be funny to see the same voices that preached about "scalability" getting angry that PS5 is "holding games back" if it doesn't reach parity, watch it happen.

I guess Sony attempt to lure MS failed.
The one in bloomberg about rising costs of NAND and PS5 bom will eat about $450.
MS : boom here is my $499 da beast. 12Tflops pauper prince!

I remember that when I said Series X was definitely RDNA 2, I was told that it would be exactly like that time I believed Xbox One X would have Zen. :messenger_beaming:

there are several possibilities

3072 x 2 x 1955 Mhz = 12 TF (~301 mm²)
3584 x 2 x 1675 Mhz = 12 TF (~351 mm²)
3840 x 2 x 1565 Mhz = 12 TF (~376 mm²)
4096 x 2 x 1465 Mhz = 12 TF (~402 mm²)

1-2 top-tier studio acquisition announcement at E3 would make the circle complete.
At least 1 Japanese studio of sorts, need the variety as even the West warm up to a high profile game from the rising sun.

12 tflops could be cpu + gpu.

Here is my 16 cores zen2 running at 4.2ghz, 1.9tflops. Osiris was hinting XsX 11.6tflops from graphics, so cpu could make up the 0.4tflops
Do some maths to 8cores, perhaps xbsx cpu runs at 2.2ghz. Roughly.

Series X - $600
PS5 - $500
Series S - $400

Gonna be interesting how it plays out.
They might have to sweeten the pot a little bit for anyone to jump on that $600 price tag. A year of Game Pass? An included Elite controller?

This thread shows that Sony has little to worry about. Their fans are gonna stay loyal. Just as MS fans probably would have or still will(depending on PS5 specs)

Gotta love the shots fired at Sony and their communication.

"At Xbox we value being open and transparent with you"

either way, this thing is going to be beast.

Except when it comes to units sold or any information that may make us look less favorable.

runs at 2.2ghz. Roughly.
IIRC AMD outed 3.2GHz on their roadmap long ago with a power draw of 25-30W for Zen (this is Zen2 even), so that's out of the realms of possibilities as it would result in a 1GHz downclock.
Secondly and the last SiSoft leak I saw was running at 3.0 GHz (Zen) (IIRC), it won't be under 3.2GHz for that reason and all things considered (inc. current node).

Maybe.

I remember Xbox fans at the beginning of the 8th gen insisting the hardware difference didn't matter and the loyalty of Xbox Live was enough to carry forward the customer-base from 360.

It's best to just buy the console you enjoy and then to douse your popcorn with your favorite artificial butter-flavoring while the fanboys go at it.

Yeah I wasn't expecting RDNA2 either. Was thinking both XSX and PS5 would be RDNA1 with some RDNA2 features in them.

Given their transparency of late I think it's safe to say this is full RDNA2.

I think RDNA2 brings further architectural improvements compared to RDNA1 as well, because IIRC RDNA1 still features some GCN elements in it and isn't "full Navi".

Also, c'mon man we can calm down a bit with the insults. This is really good news for XSX but it's no reason to turn around and make fun of Sony or PS5. Some cheeky friendly jabs are alright, but not trashing them altogether. I'm still looking forward to PS5 too and we still don't quite know its final specs, either.

It does. RDNA2 will have further architectural enhancements and efficiencies compared to first gen RDNA. Also, RDNA2 is on 7nm+, which must mean Xbox Series X is as well. :)

There is a posse of Xbox fans online that are hoping and praying that the PS5 is 9.2 from GitHub, for some really strange mentally deficient reason.

I am hoping and praying that the PS5 is 9.2 from GitHub, for some really strange mentally deficient reason. A sexual reason.

Biggest problem with xbox is that i have pc.
First off, if you have a fam or a lot of friends over especially, a console in the living room is a great complement to a PC, even more so now with gamepass. Secondly, even if you don't buy a SX, as long as you buy their games or sub to gamepass, pretty sure they are fine with that.

"Power + Speed + Compatibility" should have been the slogan, not the ridiculous "Power Your Dreams".
Dreams is a PlayStation exclusive.

But those are pretty high specs, I wonder what Sony has up their sleeves, if anything... In therms of specs this console checks all the marks for the next generation, we just don't know what it's going to be up against.

This is accurate for most people. Still consoles are planned for people who prefer to use a controller not a mouse. If you're going to spend 400 to 500 euros/dollars upgrading you might as we well purchase the best console with the best specs.

Sony has not revealed anything so it much difficult to pick one console over another. Sony very slow out of blocks releasing first party games, it took them 3 to 4 years to get going after launch in 2013.

I'll be buying the console that has best performance at launch for third party. I still buy the PS5 at later stage if the specs are lower?

I think another thing all you warriors need to remember is competition is good. MS and Sony are pushing the boundaries on possibilities because they know the other guy is innovating as well. And without each other we would not be getting these consoles right now.

With the Sony $450 bom leak, there is no way they can get a 12tflop 5700XT die size at that price.

We know the inevitable. MS got the specs win.

I don't think right now is the time to be saying one side is screwed over the other at all. Not until Sony reveals their hand. But even then, it will only matter if you are a graphics whore like me.
