Microsoft making at least four new IPs

Not sure if it was pointed out but the bag having those specific characters would mean MS owns them right? I know debate was strong on some of them but the lack of bond and DK would imply that to me anyways.

New IP!?

My heart is fluttering

Kinect MotorSports? :p

They've hired so many racing devs that I refuse to believe that they're only working on Kinect Sports.
Wouldn't surprise me if they have one team on KS and one team on a more core oriented project.

Edit: Wouldn't, not would.

So this will be a kinect title isn't it? hopefully we'll see something interesting.

BTW am I the only one getting bored with the lack of leaks? hopefully we'll see or even hear something games related soon. :(

Almost assuredly. How Microsoft ruined RARE so hard (and I wasn't even a fan of them to begin with), I'll never understand.

My hopes for this conference Microsoft has is that

a.) Kinect only takes up 10% of their presentation, so we can avoid all the horrific body waggling to present more games in the only 2 genres that work at all even half-way decently on the device

b.) At least 2 of these 4 IPs are new, hardcore focused, and perhaps something more unique than another shooter

c.) That the primary system controller is not actually that far off from the one 360 controller we have now, since that controller is pretty swell (need a decent d-pad upgrade though)

Let's be honest. Did MS ruin them, or did Nintendo realize the spirit was gone and did the right thing?

A bit of both.

In case you needed more confirmation, moar Kinect Sports incoming.

Bleh.

Was always expected I suppose.

So a Kinect Sports game + a new IP from Rare.

Btw could all these Codemasters hires simply be for more racing orientated modes in Kinect Sports? What about this supposed water sports racing game they are developing, is there anything to suggest it's not apart of Kinect Sports?

A bit of both.

It's more something like MS gave them the freedom they wanted, they didn't get the sales they needed, they made a choice whether to shut them down or make them do useful stuff like Avatars and Kinect instead. I think Rare can consider itself very lucky to still be alive. A lot of studios were shut down this gen after just one bomba, they managed to survive Conker Live and Reloaded, Grabbed by the Ghoulies, Kameo, Perfect Dark Zero (those two got sales in excess of 1 million but only due to being bundled later on). Viva Pinata was a success but considering Microsoft wanted it to become the next Pokemon it also fell very short of expectations. And Banjo Nuts and Bolts didn't sell either.

Agreed, but to be entirely fair I don't think that kind of userbase was ever on Xbox, the kind to appreciate Rares efforts I mean.

Kinect sports alone made MS a tone of money, those games sold hardware not to mention sold 2.5m each. MS would have been crazy to shut them down.

I don't know. I guess RARE did have a chance to prove they still had it with Kameo, but that just sort of turned out to be a forgettable game altogether. And Perfect Dark Zero was just gross.

Banjo was ok i s'pose, but I couldn't get into the concept of building unique vehicles to overcome some basic and unchallenging missions.

Everything else, to me, total shit bomb. I really was never a big fan of RARE, but I did love me some Blast Corps. And how I would love a fucking spirtual successor to Blast Corps...

Viva Piñata was a great game.

Bleh.

Hell yeah.

I'm a huge fan of the first two K.sports games.

In terms of Motion control gaming Rare hit it out of the park with this franchise.

In my opinion, Rare doesnt get credit enough for literally carrying MS on their back for the past few years.

When MS needed to transform the dash to the NXE, it was Rare that pulled it off in spades.

When MS needed a franchise to counter Nintendo's true Wii system seller in Wii Sports it was Rare who stepped up and pulled off what no other dev on Kinect has been able to duplicate so far.

Having your biggest Kinect franchise at launch with an improved Kinect is a great move for MS.

Nintendo not having a game on the caliber of Wii Sports at launch definately was a huge mistake in my opinion that hurt the Wii-U's launch.

This is why you see Nintendo doubling up for round two with both Wii Sports 3 and new Wii Fit.

Spot on. I always laugh at how people pretend that MS didn't allow Rare to release every classic franchise they believed would bring the 360 the same success they had on Nintendo.

Perfect Dark Zero, Kameo, Banjoo-Kaz, and Two Vivas.

Not only that they overhauled the original Banjoo and released it on XBLA for fans, while 4J developed Perfert Dark HD.

When you see people pretend MS was wrong for not releasing a sequel to a game like Kameo it's because they have no clue about how the game got bashed at that time.

Here is a history lesson.

Back then there was no Metacritic or all of these gaming sites that have a bearing on how a game might be percieved by the gaming public.

At that time, EGM the mag was literally the most important review a game could get (at least in the US).

When they reviewed the 360's launch line-up they gave Kameo a mid-boggling 63%, which at that time was the kiss of death.

This review so off the mark, the Peter Moore at the time directly referenced the underserved review as to how they completely missed the mark.

K. sports is clearly the most success Rare has had in the gaming world in a decade, regardless of the usual hate from people in forums ans gaming sites.

edit

Could the person just be doing stuff for the KS Gems on XBLA?

Wouldn't make sense as those gems were simply the add-ons from K.sports 1 & 2.

It would be a head scratching move if MS passed on the K.Sports opportunity for the NextBox as opposed to still working on this gen.

But anything is possible

What I find weird is, why not use Banjo, Conker, etc in Kinect Sports? It's free for them and it's bound to pick up sales a bit. Better than completely ignoring all their own IP...

Highly doubt it'll be a Kinect racing game. Especially since even the follow-up to Joyride didn't use Kinect.

Yes, racing games are a dead end for kinect. Ok you can simulate a driving wheel with your hands (and that's not even such a good idea), now what ? The potential in kinect is in trackig free and complex motions, and driving a vehicle is the exact opposite of that.

It could be a good idea... though for games like kinect sports, you also have to consider the morphology of characters. I suppose it's easier to match ingame motions to one's own when the character has at least semi-realistic proportions, unlike Banjo and his short legs/huge arms.

Well...

I didn't know the details about that game... and keep forgetting that Rare were into motion+party games as soon as 2006 or earlier (and even designed their own "wand"). So much for "MS ruined Rare with kinect".

Yeah, when they showed this off they also showed off a FPS game using the motion peripheral, SoulCatcher. I wish so bad someone had recorded it!
