I think they have far bigger problems than denying always online, mostly the announcement of the damn console! This would've never happened if they went full-on in Q1 2013.

The vacuum ABSOLUTELY NEEDS electricity to run. If a vacuum could be made that easily didn't require electricity, then yes, you'd be a fucking fool to purchase a vacuum that needed electricity. That's not the case, and games don't NEED to be always online. What a dolt.
The phone analogy is just as bad. With a cell phone the connection IS THE SERVICE. With a video game, always on is a superfluous, tangential OPTION/RESTRICTION, that holds the potential to needlessly interrupt the service. Big difference.

That's the problem. I don't see any reason for mandating always on. There are reasons to encourage consumers to stay online all the time (i.e. automatic patching, updates, downloading of interesting demos) but what reasons is there to force it besides piracy protection and feeding people targeted advertisements?
Plenty products leverage the internet but many don't just stop working because of a wonky (or in many cases, unobtainable) internet connection.

Not necessarily, when Halo 2/Halo 3 popped on the Steam registry, Stinkles/Frankie denied it's existence and said there were no plans in porting Halo 3 anywhere.
Microsoft never outright confirms or denies rumors or allegations, they have the most stubborn poker face out there.

When someone like Gies says something dumb I wish more members would post respectful criticism of his opinion without resorting to personal insults. It makes it a whole lot easier for people to dismiss neogaf when we spend pages and pages piling on one guy with post like 'this guy is an idiot, how does this guy have a job' etc. Yes he takes some very questionable stances but the response here is disproportionate.

I can understand the criticism, I just do not agree that he should be beholden to the posters in this thread to engage in discourse, especially in its current state. He's paid to write articles for Polygon, if I'm not mistaken, to attract views. And he has gotten the attention of the fastest moving thread on GAF currently without even posting here.
Not that anything I said will blunt the intensity of the folks posting in this thread. They're gonna do whatever, almost regardless of what Gies says or does.

By not saying anything, they're pretty much confirming what we already know to be the truth.
Hopefully the Durango comes in at a purchase price that will make people not care about "always online" and "one-time activation" games. If not, well... I wouldn't want to be Microsoft.

I think it's just funny that in 2013 in the age of the internet companies still feel it is necessary to deny at all costs. Just say, "We're working on the successor to the fantastic Xbox 360 and we will have more information about this subject and more at a future date and time."

Not necessarily. They could dismiss the claim without acknowledging the existence of the console. The language they use is very telling.
This implies it is always online, but also leaves room for the opposite to be true.
