Microsoft Surface Pro 4 announced: "better in nearly every way" (The Verge)

Eh, unless you're going to be doing intensive tasks, I would just get the Surface 3. I bought the Best Buy Black Friday one (Intel Atom, 64Gig Drive) and am pretty happy with it. I'm a bit disappointed the pen isn't included (I thought it was?) and that's an additionaly $60 along with the $120 for the keyboard/cover. But the cover and Surface itself has been pretty good with general browsing or eReading (or coding practice) that I bought it for. I haven't tried art applications because while I have a Nintendo DS stylus around here, I'm not really comfortable with using it on this when I tried the Surface pen in the past and that shows where your pen will "hit" if you hover over the "board"/Surface for better accuracy.

I got a pro 3 i3 one from microsoft.

Just got to wait till it gets shipped here now

honestly don't know what im going to be doing with it.

i've had my eye on them for since they first came out. glad my dumb ass did not get the first ones or the RT crap

Here's another quick picture I painted with SP4, this time with Clip Studio. First time using the watercolor tools, I had no idea what I was doing with them (the blending was funky) but it went okay I guess.

I also recorded a video of my process here if anyone's interested:

Not specific to SP4 but Windows 8/10.

I have $10 credit that will expire in a couple hours, any good app recommendations?

I'm on a SP2 if that matters.

Anybody know how to set key functions on the side button for the pen? I want to set the undo function for Photoshop CC (ctrl alt z) to the side button but I can't find where to do that.

I think the side button is permanently bound to right click. In Photoshop is there a way to map undo to the right mouse click? I realize most likely you can't since right click probably bring up a bunch of menus with tons of functions in them, it's just about the only way I could see it working the way you want though.

Yeah, I contacted MS supported to see if the button can be given key functions. But its not possible. That is so backwards. That needs to be changed pronto.

I'm still torn between the i5 or i7. Can't decide if I want to spend the extra cash on the i7. My plan is some light gaming, web browsing, and clip studio/artrage 4.

Define light gaming. My i5 has been great for exactly what you describe + comics. However, the most intense game I'm played has been Pinball FX2 on Steam.

E: IMHO, the i7 isn't really worth it unless you're doing a lot of large photo/video editing. The SP4 isn't a gaming laptop, and a desktop is more suited for the really intense work. So I'd use the cash for the type cover and call it a day. Worst case, if you really do find that it's struggling to keep up, you can exchange it for the i7.

I have the i5, 8RAM. Could I run Fallout New Vegas? I've never played it and I've heard its the best one out of the recent games.

Light gaming is Paradox Grand Strategy, Command: Modern Air Naval Operations, and probably some indies or hex based strategy games. Nothing too intensive, I've got a desktop for that, I'd probably use in-home streaming for anything too intense. CS:GO, D3, or Kerbal Space Program would be a bonus. I'm leaning towards the i5 as I think I should be able to handle that. I'd get the 16 gig version.

I have no idea about those games specifically but from what I have tried, I'm finding the i5 is about on par with a PS3 for performance (assuming the game is well optimised). By comparison the i7 would have about double the graphical performance.

You can turn that hovering cursor off if it annoys you. If you meant you liked it, and that's why you don't want to use the inferior DS stylus - well it won't work anyway. Screen is capacitive so you'll need a finger to make it work. Or for more accuracy the pen uses a separate digitiser but the one needs to be active.

If you're even curious about using it for art, then definitely get the pen. Assuming it's the same one that the SP3 uses, I'd expect there would be some fairly cheap used ones for sale as some people will have bought the SP4 pen to use on their SP3?

Being a superior left handed person, is there any way to get the Lightroom settings UI on the left side of the screen instead of the inferior right side?

FW update with a new display driver is out.

Fingers crossed the driver crashes are gone.

edit: nope, just had another crash. ffs.

Not exactly true. They've added a touch based interface for Illustrator.

They added UI scaling for Photoshop as well for high DPI screens like the Surface. I'm hoping they add a touch friendly interface to PS soon.

Photoshop got a new version with more tablet friendly features.

Also modifier buttons can now be configured straight in the UI:

It's not perfect yet, but a lot better.

Nice, ask and ye shall receive.

I'm getting similar on my yoga 700, so it does seem fairly widespread on skylake chips. Not much comfort maybe, but it does seem to not be a surface pro specific issue.

Something desperately needs to be done about the type cover keyboard drivers. Depending on how I wake up the device I have had this happen to me:
- using the keyboard to wake the device then touchpad doesn't work. Keys still work though.
- using the touchscreen to wake the device keyboard doesn't respond at all.
- turn on the device with type cover folded back and connected then the touchscreen doesn't respond at all.
- while using the device the touchscreen and pen stop working completely till reboot.
- while using the device gestures on the touchpad just stop working.

This is an excellent device marred by shitty drivers/software. How did MS screw this up? It's like buying a car and having the steering wheel randomly stop working. Such a fundamental component clearly didn't get enough testing. They can't blame an OEM as they designed everything.

The new Photoshop stuff is really nice! I wish I could add custom buttons to that modifier panel, but even just Alt is a godsend. The undo/redo works well, and best of all tapping with five fingers toggles full screen mode. I hope they keep working to improve this, but it's changed my viewpoint on photoshop quite a bit.

Clip Studio remains my favourite, however.

I think Im getting a surface 3 for some blender 3d modeling and making simple games on Unity. Looking around ebay for any good deals.

you can have Bluetooth shut off and using the pen still works (with pressure), but the button and eraser won't do anything.

No button here, I'm on SP4!
I went into bluetooth and surface pen options, and it was shown as connected, but started to work correctly too :3 Thanks for the tip.

there is a button plus eraser on the SP4 Pen unless I'm misunderstanding you.

Glad you got it working.

oh shi... that long thing is a button?! I've had this for weeks!! o__o;

edit: so it just changes the pen to behave like right click? interesting.

Spent all of today painting this picture while hanging around with my gf and her family. It was so nice to have such a capable drawing computer in a portable form like this. I was using the SP4 i5, and dîdn't need the keyboard. So glad I learned of the pen's side button though!

Does anyone do any programming/development work on a Surface? My Macbook screen got a little fucked, so I'm thinking of getting one of these as a secondary device for programming, notetaking, and web browsing, as they seem a bit more portable. Not concerned with gaming or anything too intensive. Does the keyboard do the job well enough? Can I get away with one of the older models?

One important question for programming and dev is whether your development software copes okay with the high dpi monitor. Some apps older than a year or two are entirely illegible, but some old apps display at 200% size so appear fine.

I love the keyboard and trackpad, although if I'm nitpicking I'll admit I'm not especially fond of the up/down cursors.

I like the drawings. I'm no artist but its nice to see what can be made with this thing! I hope to receive mine on Friday.

i5 SP4 here. I noticed that I lost like 10% of my battery charge overnight after doing an actual shutdown (start menu>power>shut down). My Surface is maybe 5 weeks old. Something to be concerned about, or just a poor job of Windows calculating the battery charge percentage?
