First time Surface Pro owner and I have a quick question about the newest version of the Type Cover. Is it supposed to stay closed via magnets like the iPad Smart Cover does? Mine doesn't seem to, it will flip open if my Surface is cover side down. I assume it's designed this way, but just want to make sure I didn't get a defective one.

No, nothing that keeps it closed.

Apparently the disconnecting/unresponsive keyboard is still an issue on the Pro 4? How have they not fixed this on the fourth iteration?

Um so I've restarted several times, uninstalled and reinstalled the drivers from device manager and still nothing...sigh

What else should I try?

Alright we back, these devices sometimes...

what are the software issues you are concerned with? Only issue I've had is battery drain while in sleep mode. I changed to hibernate and it's perfect now. It takes about 5 seconds longer to start up out of hibernate but it's worth. I hardly consider that a dealbreaker but I guess others have different priorities.

Sorry for the slow reply, but yes I was referring mainly to the battery drain, but I also hear there were keyboard problems with keys not responding after waking and only reactivating after a reboot? And display driver issues, laggy scroll etc. Nothing dealbreaking, like I said, I still really want one. But enough to convince me to wait until the autumn win10 update and get it with the 10% educational discount.

I could be wrong, but I think the display driver thing was supposed to be a part of the new firmware that released earlier this week. We get the Windows 10 fall update on Tuesday so we ought to have a pretty good idea of where we stand with the other issues next week.

Well this is a problem... my pen isn't being read on my screen...
Clicking the eraser still opens One Note, but I can't draw or write. Reinstalled wintab drivers and still nothing. Re-paired my pen, nope...

Hmm

Edit: It sees when I put the eraser on my screen, but not the regular nib end

Edit 2: Popping the battery seems to have fixed it.

People with tbe sp4, are you happy with it? Upgrade from sp3 or wait a year? Do you think the iPad pro would do just as good for what you use it for?

Sup Surface bros.

I'm planning to take a few 3D modeling classes and I was wondering how well the Surface Pro 4 copes with SolidWorks and the like. For reference, I may end up with an 8GB i5 model. Any engineers/architects /product monkeys in the room?

I really like mine. It's my first Surface though so I can't speak to upgrading from the 3. I have an iPad Air now, went with a SP4 over an iPad Pro because I was looking for something that I could use as a laptop when needed and I don't think that's very possible with iOS.

This happened to me once after I brought it home and turned I on after it working in the MS store flawlessly.. And the keyboard was not responding either. I was stuck in a OneNote loop or something. I had clicked the eraser 1 too many times and or hit the keyboard key just right and I was stuck. Holding power button for 30s helped shut it down and a restart fixed the issue. Later on I found out in my photos section that I was apparently taking screenshots. Lol.

No issues like that since!!

Hmm, I'd probably recommend the i7 model if you're serious about using it for 3d modelling. Whilst I'm sure you could make it work on the i5, I can't imagine the experience would be smooth without any vram. That said I've never tried solidworks on intergrated graphics before so I'm only guessing.

Just to avoid any confusion, I don't intend to design experimental nuclear plants. It will be used for learning (as my current laptop doesn't have the required horsepower) and maybe some lightweight product design/rendering.

you would probably be fine then with the i5 but if you can afford the i7, then you will certainly see performance improvements. Heck you could use the m3 version, they are all capable. Just depends if you think spending the extra money is worth the faster workflow with doing 3D design.

Yeah the i7 would be more beneficial for rendering, but modelling out buildings and the like, it isn't a necessity. People would run AutoCAD on i5 SP3 for example.

I can run 3D art apps like 3DS Max, Maya, and ZBrush on my SP4 i5 w/ 8GB fine, but admittedly I wouldn't consider doing rendering on it.

Anyone else experiencing the death sleep issue? Where if it's disconnected from power for a few hours, it just won't wake from sleep without a hard reset?

Ok I got my SP4 and I mainly want to use it with art type programs but it seems that the driver for the pen is off whereas line are not being tapered, I have this problem in Paint tool Sai and Manga studio. Is there something I need to install? First time Surface owner.

I've preordered an SP4 (UK here) as the Adobe iOS apps can't ingest RAW camera images and work on them; with the SP4 I can just run the full versions of Lightroom and Photoshop, so it's a no brainer. I normally lean pretty heavily towards Apple stuff too.

Just read this over Anandtech. I wonder if this could be affecting the SP4 and SP3 w/ Win10. At work, our SP3's are running great except for the new SP3's with Win10. Their battery life seems to be affected by the sleep bug.

http://www.anandtech.com/show/9751/examining-intel-skylake-speed-shift-more-responsive-processors

With Skylake, Intel's newest 6th generation Core processors, this changes. The processor has been designed in a way that with the right commands, the OS can hand control of the frequency and voltage back to the processor. Intel is calling this technology 'Speed Shift'. We’ve discussed Speed Shift before in Ian’s Skylake architecture analysis, but despite the in-depth talk from Intel, Speed Shift was noticably absent at the time of the launch of the processors. This is due to one of the requirements for Speed Shift - it requires operating system support to be able to hand over control of the processor performance to the CPU, and Intel had to work with Microsoft in order to get this functionality enabled in Windows 10. As of right now, anyone with a Skylake processor is actually not getting the benefit of the technology, at least right now. A patch will be rolled out in November for Windows 10 which will enable this functionality, but it is worth noting that it will take a while for it to roll out to new Windows 10 purchases.

Hi everyone,

Surface 4 pro user here. When I start up my surface from hibernate. I have a backlight bleed at the middle right bottom of my screen approx. a 1/3". After the windows screen login loads the backlight bleed disappears. It also does not appear at all on the main desktop screen or anywhere after.

Is this an issue that can/will remedy itself maybe with time? or is this something I should bring in to address at the MS store. My SP4pro is a week old...

I have the warranty and etc. Just wondering what peoples thoughts are.

Mine doesn't seem to be doing it. In bright room though. See if anyone else is reporting. Is it obvious and bright?

I only notice it and see it (and its obvious to me) because it occurs on the Surface logo screen before the log in. So the backlit at that time is on for the greyish black screen but I am getting this brighter blotch and bleed that's white on the edge and ends up being a lighter grey. I will try to post a photo or something soon. Wish I could take a screen shot from the logo screen to show you all what I am trying to describe, but I do not know how.

I did some searching online and did not see anyone else have a weird backlit bleed on the logo screen.

Edit: my brightness settings are at 25 or 40% for my use all the time. Idk if the surface logo screen defaults to those brightness settings. I will turn my brightness at 100 and hibernate then hibernate to get take the photo.

There is zero reason to get the i7 over i5 unless you hate money. It makes no difference for modeling operations since they are not multithreaded.

In terms of solidworks it will not run well on integrated gpu's unless you are doing some super basic stuff. For that kinda stuff I would go with the surface book or a laptop with a decent gfx card.

It is hard to taken a photo of it with my phone. Held the S4pro against my black shirt horizontally and took a photo with my Lumia. If you click on the photo it expands out much bigger. So it is more visible when I am looking down at it from an angle while typing.

That's what I thought you meant and that's what I was looking for. Hard to tell from that photo because of the relative contrast but it could either be normal or a slightly misaligned bezel/paint. I'm sure the store will do a comparison to either trade it for a new one or show it's normal and harmless.

Thanks for your input! I'll hopefully be able to stop by the MS store on Tues this week

I can see similar blacklight bleed on my Surface Book during the startup screen. My old SP2 had it as well.

I think the startup screen uses higher default brightness so that's why it's more noticeable. At 25% brightness on the desktop, I don't see it.

I don't really consider it a defect, with LCD you're never going to be free of blacklight bleed, it will just be noticeable somewhere else.

I've been flip-flopping about getting a gaming laptop vs a more versatile surface book vs a surface pro 4.

It's going to be my main work computer, which means mostly spreadsheets, Unity, Photoshop and some video editing as the most intensive tasks. Leaning towards the SP4 now, especially since it could double as an awesome mobile HTPC.

My only worry is how the keyboard feels both on a desk and on my lap. Will find out soon I hope :)

If I wanted to run a game like FF14 on it, I imagine that the SP4 would do fine right?

There's a video about that, seems to run alright.

I hope the i7 shows up soon. I really want my SP4.

any digital artists pick up the pen tip kit?

yea it's only $10 but I wouldn't mind some impressions. I like the standard tip better than the SP3 pen tip, so I might be a waste of money for me.

Does anybody else have a problem with a Pro 3 and OneNote where it will be sort of stuck in virtual keyboard mode and only accept pen input in the top third of the screen? The only way to fix it seems to be to not run OneNote in fullscreen mode. You can disable the virtual keyboard and it will disappear but nothing will be shown where it was. If you turn on background lines it will not shot them, just in the top third of the screen. Really annoying and seems to happen quite often since two weeks ago.

Just piping in that I have that exact same bleed (location, etc) on my SP4, also only noticable on the Surface boot-up screen.
