Middle-earth: Shadow of War - Review thread

Not agreeing with his tone, but the amount of people who were hoping for this game to burn in hell was ridiculous. It's not even the worse case of monetization in a game, yet this one was torn to pieces for it. Wonder what started it all.

Because it's a very high profile example of negative trends in the industry.

Game with huge advertising budget garners lots of hate for poor practices, quell surprise. The same was true for destiny, cod, battlefield, and whatever next game that you love oh so much that's just getting so much nasty hate. Get over it. They're companies selling you a product.

One image's bulletpoint >>>>> Other reviews to the contrary apparently on GAF. I know people usually just look at scores and use them to justify their own preconceptions but this thread is reaching some new territory.

A little effort should be expected of people beyond using one review as a consensus to validate your opinion. It's fine if you feel that way still, but it's not an accurate portrayal of how this game is actually being reviewed.

You know what? You're 100% right about this and I'm gonna admit I was wrong in jumping to conclusions based on just one review from a site I hadn't even heard about before as well. These quotes actually paint a totally different picture, drastically different actually. This sounds damn good to me and exactly what I wanted for the first one.

Yea I'll say it again

Fuck the haters and fuck the hate

Don't let the door hit you in the ass on the way out.

And please stay the fuck out of the OT

We don't need you. We don't want you

I mean the loot boxes are fucking stupid no matter what, should not be defended. Game looks good though.

Embarrassing. Most OTs are already a relentless circle-jerk, especially those for smaller games. OTs need more discussion and perspectives, not fewer.

If you have the game and wanna criticize it in OT? Sure.

If you wanna go in just to shit it up? Don't do that.

I posted some criticism in the MvCI OT but not until I had actually played it myself.

I mean, you can see this in the screenshots. They clearly heard the feedback regarding the bland environments in the first game.

Look I've been saying this for days

This map IS Middle-Earth

LET'S GO!

It's not that GRINDING is predatory, it's that grinding is predatory when they have implemented the grind intentionally to try and tempt you into paying for loot boxes to make the game go at a better pace (when they could have just made the game at that pace in the first place).

I was hoping they would improve on two things: the world and the story. Sounds like those took a backseat this time around as well. Combined with that final act grind for the ending I read about a couple pages back, and I'm very skeptical.

Im sold after the reviews, will pick it up at launch.

Do you really think EA and Activision won't exploit this somehow? Look at Dead Space 3, a game that was completely divorced from what made it's predecessors great because of the forced inclusion of MT's.
That's some straight up revisionist history. Your statement implies that without MTs that Dead Space 3 would've felt like a dead space game, when no, the complete shift in tone and focus is a way bigger culprit. Dead Space 3 without MTs, (and it's yet another example of a completely beatable game without them considering the absurd amount of upgrades and ammo you get, almost as if they were tacked on and had nothing to do with the core design...), is still a bad Dead Space game.

Hope the combat stays challenging throughout. The best part of SoM was when you got your ass kicked in the beginning, getting murdered by some dweeb captain to make him rise through the ranks. The game got way too easy by the end.

I think the worry over drive-by posters entering the OT and ruining it are unfounded. The people buying the game and posting in there will probably eat each over Shadow of War's fucking stupid story anyway.

Unfortunately it sounds like you get powerful even quicker this time. Hopefully the new difficulty levels help with this.

Loot box garbage should always be scrutinized and questioned for all eternity. Lest it turn the kind of bad that's prophesied.

It merely being present lends an odious air. It's inevitably surfaced into your face, essentially like ads.

I think we can all agree that it's just no good. Even those who think people complaining are dumbos ought to prefer if they didn't have anything to complain about.

We can only wait and see, I certainly hope not.

As far as DS3 goes, it's a pretty straight line from MT's to it's failure. EA demanded MT's, so they had to implement a new weapon crafting system to support it. This in turn leads to some crazy OP weapons and universal ammunition. To balance this they sped up the necromorphs, which now swarm the player. It's no longer a horror game and fans of the series hate it.

It had other serious problems, but the MT's fundamentally changed the way the game was played and broke the survival horror progression.

Very good summary of what happened to DS3.

I'm from New York. There is no other level for us

Stop brandishing terms like "we" and "us" as invisible fellow warriors to deflect your poor judgement.

And please stop stereotyping the peoples of NYC. Brazen arrogance is not a requirement for citizenship.

See it is getting good reviews. I really don't get the hate at all. It is just people angry about changes in the software industry as a whole. SaaS is the future of software for every industry and pushing against it rather than getting ahead of it with better ideas is not the answer.

I really don't get how the pushsquare review says this:

Right off the bat, we'll say that the loot boxes feel out of place, and not just because this is a single player game. Going to a separate menu screen just to open them up makes it seem like they've been haphazardly bolted to the experience. Can you complete the game without ever opening a loot box? Absolutely, but that doesn't change the fact that they've been jammed into a title that definitely doesn't need them. Whether you use them or not, seeing that little marketplace tab on the main menu cheapens what is otherwise a great game.

Yet the Gadgets review says it this way:

Unlike other games that feature micro-transactions, you aren’t constantly nagged to purchase them, and in fact you disable them completely by choosing to play offline. While there’s an online component not too dissimilar to Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain’s Forward Operating Base (FOB) feature that pits your forces against those online, it doesn’t impact the progress of your campaign. Instead it simply allows you to increase your stats if your troops defend well enough against the onslaught.

Nonetheless, not once did we feel compelled to spend money to progress in Shadow of War, which is heartening. The razor sharp combat and Nemesis system ensured that each encounter was full of entertaining moments, such as a flying dragon hurling fire down on the battlefield, or the surprise arrival of a high-level orc captain and his retinue, or Forthog the Orc-Slayer showing up and slaying your target for you. Or in our case, all of these at once. Thanks to the procedurally generated nature of the game world, there are enough diversions to make sure you won't mind that you’ll have to have another go at trying to convince a giant Olog to fight for you.

Who is right? Whos wrong here and is hate to blame? Why is one reviewer not even bothered and not even compelled to use them, but the other is bothered by the mere presence? Where is the disconnect here? Is the mere presence of something that may benefit some but not affect others so insulting?

I myself will buy it once I get my XOX and most likely enjoy it as much as I did the first one without even using 1 loot box.

Wow really nice scores! It's actually doing a bit better than I was expecting.

Really excited to play this now I enjoyed the first game quite a bit

Yeah this was my thinking too. I still like Dead Space 3 but it's clear the different direction was the reason it was the way it was.

The customisable guns system was awesome imo even if you never touched MTs.

Can't be certain but maybe some reviewers got farther into the game, and the end-game/second-ending in particular than others?

There's no right/wrong. It's too multi-faceted an issue. Some people are completely turned off by any implementation of a paid element in a non-F2P game and others can completely ignore it if it doesn't manifest in the way you play the game. There will never be a consensus on it.

I nearly spit my coffee out in a fit a laughter reading this.

Just too many good games out right now and on the horizon for my 60 bucks this go around. Will pick it up as soon as there is a lull though.

Between Destiny 2, Mario, and Assissins Creed, Xenoblade 2, Monster Hunter World...there are alot of games out there to play.
