Middle-earth: Shadow of War - Review thread

Who is right? Whos wrong here and is hate to blame? Why is one reviewer not even bothered and not even compelled to use them, but the other is bothered by the mere presence? Where is the disconnect here? Is the mere presence of something that may benefit some but not affect others so insulting?

I myself will buy it once I get my XOX and most likely enjoy it as much as I did the first one without even using 1 loot box.

People are just different and are put off by different things. The mere presence of the loot boxes makes sure I will never buy this game. I go to single player, story driven experiences to inhabit and get lost in a cool world and the first time I saw even a UI element of a loot box I would immediately be taken out of the game and not want to play anymore. And it's fine, there are plenty of other games for me. For now at least.

I hated the first one even if I love the LOTR franchise. I'm still curious about how this one turns out.

Reviewers ain't our friends. They forget about those loot boxes the moment their free press kits arrive.

There was no free press kit sent my way. I earned Gold through normal play and opened quite a few loot boxes during my review. They're in your face about it but it's all stuff you can earn through normal play. The feedback loop is fine and you're constantly gaining new orcs and loot without having to worry about paying to win.

Just too many good games out right now and on the horizon for my 60 bucks this go around. Will pick it up as soon as there is a lull though.

Between Destiny 2, Mario, and Assissins Creed, Xenoblade 2, Monster Hunter World...there are alot of games out there to play.

Not a single one of those games is out except for Destiny 2, and won't be out for weeks and months.

Had no idea this was out next week, nor did I know the embargo would drop so early. That's refreshing to see honestly.

I really dig the GI team, but it's hard to take that high score seriously when they just had Mordor as their cover story

Nice to see it's scoring well though. Looks like it'll be worth the $35 bucks I paid for it on CDkeys

I gave it a 4 out of 5 over at USgamer.

The Loot Boxes only really bothered me in the latter game when I was building my army out.
Great review!

Look I've been saying this for days

This map IS Middle-Earth

LET'S GO!

Yeah I watched IGN's and Games Radar's review and it's looking good indeed. GR actually said there is a lot to do, fun stuff at that and you can definitely get distracted in these great lush looking environments. I now wonder why that other site said the exact opposite. Ah well.

I'm not getting the game right now though, plenty to finish left, I wanna wait for One X and I still need to finish the first one. IGN also said to just ignore the microtransactions because basically you are paying to make the game less fun. So that's interesting.

There are a ton of games coming out in the near future though so its not an odd thing to say. We're getting into the Holiday season and in the next few weeks we've got Super Mario Odyssey, Wolfensetin the New Colossus, The Evil Within 2 and so on.

Just divorce yourself from trying to fit this in-between The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. This is an alternate timeline where Tolkien was part Michael Bay. Enjoy the ride. Let go.

LOL! Back of box quote.

Great review as usual Mike!

Loved the first game. Will be on this day one.

This thread is.... Entertaining, people losing their shit over this loot box thing.

Because its a single player game with RNG loot boxes.

And its not a hill to die upon to discuss it - lootboxes are showing up in several places and causing some consternation - look at Forza for another big example and at how far these ideas can be nestled into the core user experience. Or NBA2K18's next level monetization.

I don’t have a problem with discussion but I’d venture to state that the vitriolic comments that flood in anytime a Mordor thread emerges has graduated well past that point.

Again, this was a review thread and almost immediately, you had the same arguments by many of the same people not only attacking the quality of the game DESPITE the positive reviews but also claiming reviewers were paid off, etc., along with people making baseless claims about how this game was supposedly forged AROUND the loot box system. (A theory which has been debunked by those who have played it)

I agree these issues deserve discussion and I understand the inclusion of loot boxes infuriates some people – I don’t much care for it myself – but I would also posit that at some point, the issue has been addressed and exhaustively argued and some of us who are looking forward to this game would appreciate at least one thread that isn’t overtaken by the loot issue.

Just my two cents anyway.

And the New Yorker who wants to throw fists in the streets to defend a video game is crazier than any of those people.

So I read a couple of them, both the high scoring ones and the more middling ones.

The shelob thing gets mentioned in some, and how they take some freedoms... I personally couldn't care less as I don't know much about the lore anyway, and as long as it's executed well.

The open world gets praised for being bigger and more diverse, but maybe looks a bit dated according to some, compared to the first one?

The combat and the deeper siege mechanics gets the most praise so far.

The nemesis system and the variety found among the different orcs also seems positive, while more central characters to the plot don't get as much attention

RPG mechanics or systems can initially feel overwhelming as there is a lot going on.

And the lootbox microtransactions are mentioned a lot, some say that it never felt intrusive or in the way, but highly optional, and something that feels tacked on.

My moral compass has somewhat taken a hit on this matter. Some time ago I was ok with games like Halo 5 and Overwatch doing it because it financed the free dlc model, which was really beneficial for the players. But then with Halo wars 2, they introduced them even though the dlc was paid, and they are present in Destiny 2 as well. I don't feel as though that they are a big part of the aforementioned games, but more minor optional things. To be clear though, I have not spend a single dime on any of these microtransactions where they don't serve a greater purpose.

So far I am intrigued by what I've read, but I will ultimately wait a bit, mainly because I want to know how AC:Origins fares as well.

Edit: Also These reviews aren't that good in helping me to the judge visual and technical quality, hopefully DF covers that aspect soon.

Am I the only one who thinks a Lord of the Rings game where the weakest part of the experience is the story is a complete travesty? The last thing a game set in this universe should have is a poor story. I can’t wait till the shadow games are done and we can get a proper game that actually respects the material.

I haven't done any of those things.

Could you elaborate on how many loot boxes have you opened and how many gameplay hours it took you to collect gold for it?

The game press surrendered to the publisher's will and for the adoption of anti consumer measures.

I know I shouldn't have expected better but I did.

You're telling me this soulless, mindless loot box fest is almost the same caliber as Horizon and Nier? Lmfao

The first game didn't have a good story either. The Shadow games are basically if a corporate executive from the 90s was given carte blanche to make LOTR into a Saturday morning cartoon in hopes of selling a line of toys.

Horizon was a lootbox fest... You didn't have to pay for them in the same way that you don't have to pay for them in this game. Of course, SoW does give you the option.

Damn near every quest reward involved a loot box of some sort in H:ZD.

New game. Same freak out.

Soon there'll be another game with MTs and the outrage will move to that one.

I somehow don't think RDR2 will have the same people lining up to express that they're refusing to buy the game when it inevitably has a MT filled online mode.

The story won't be good because Ron has been dead for over 50 years. If you want to read a great story read the book

The "story" for me will be moving through the world, exploring Ithilien and the Dead Marshes, and beating shit up

I mean I can't remember a thing about the story in the first game and I loved it

Don't let a single Shadow of War thread slide eh. Make sure you keep posting in every one about how much you hate it.

This game, Forza 7 and Cuphead are going to keep me busy for a long long time.

EDIT: Bring on the loot boxes :D

Well you're technically right.

So this is a case of a dev balancing the game well without the MTs?

I can't believe that because WB... But good if true.

Will wait for gaf impressions.

I don't know, story was terrible in the first game but it was still great.

I thought the movies were pretty terrible though and I haven't read the books in a couple of decades.

So, all the flaws of the previous games + no major improvements + lootboxes + Shelob boobies? No thanks.

The gamespot review convinced me to pass on this game especially in regards to the end game.
Yikes, that sounds particularly awful.

How on earth can gamespot justify showing the end mission and ending itself. Personally I dont really care about Tolkien lore, but there are many fans that would be looking forward to the story elements.
lol, no one cares about the shite story in this game, and Gamespot showed the end mission because of how grindy and badly designed it is.

Lol, If Grinding is predatory then the entire JRPG market is evil.
Wut? I haven't grinded in a JRPG since the 8-bit era.

This is not a critique or a discussion. It's a witch hunt
Pfft hahaha come on. Grow up.

That's... quite the disingenuous way to describe Horizon's quest rewards, lmao. You do realize that in gaming terminology, "loot box" doesn't mean "literally just a box with some loot in it", right?

Well they did turn massive trilogy into three regular-ish length movies. While being good movies it was destined to butcher story of the books somewhat as they had to cut out quite a bit stuff. World building especially suffered.

Then they did opposite for Hobbit. Took one small book and turned into three regular length movies. Over extending narrative and making up shit just to fill time.
