Anyone watching this? From the same guy that did Hill House and Bly Manor? Difference is that this isn't based on anything but an original work by Flanagan.

I have one episode to go, and I've quite liked the format so far.

My son and I are watching it, it’s excellent.

I really like the treatment of the vampire. It seems like what a real vampire would kind of have to do to live lol

Can't believe all the love this seems to be getting. Me and the other half thought it was utterly shit.

It's a slow slow burn. If it wasn't for the writing and the fact that I didn't have much to watch for Halloween and wanted a slight scare, I would have given up like episodes 3 or 4 like everyone else. It picks up at the end.

Overall. I enjoyed it. It was dramatic as hell.
Well done by that Mon-senior guy. And the lead woman reminded me of Nia Jax.

I'm guessing it's monsieur

Nah you were right, its a title

monsignor

Definition of monsignor

: a Roman Catholic prelate having a dignity or titular distinction (as of domestic prelate or protonotary apostolic) usually conferred by the pope —used as a title prefixed to the surname or to the given name and surname

I thought the contrast of angels and vampires was an interesting take tbh. But I don't think it was as good as Bly or Hill

I thought it was good overall. The acting of the priest, crazy woman priest and sheriff are standout. When they aren’t on screen it kind of lags. I don’t like the ending though. Trying to stay away from spoilers. But it doesn’t stick the landing

Which one is better, boy or hill house? Haven’t watched those and I might be able to binge watch one.

Waaaaaay too slow. Far too many monologues, and it's basically an entire mass each episode.

But for all that I liked it. It doesn't really have much of a point and the ending is.... well it's an ending.

I did grok what he was going for but I think it was far too self indulgent. The core of the message is a movie at best, 7-8 eps was just too long.

And dn, that is the most ethnically diverse remote isolate small fishing island on earth! Even when they spend hours explaining it I just didn't buy it.

My wife and I liked it. It's definitely a slow burn and I think if they would have tried to go the route of full season (12 episodes or so) it would have overstayed it's welcome.

It is super slow yet it worked for me in this

We watched it when it first came out. The series itself is pretty good, but it’s got a lot of slow points and far too many monologues.

People go off on 4 minute soapboxes regularly. Enjoyed a couple of the high spots on the show that I won’t spoil here.

The rowboat scene will stay with me forever. That part alone basically justifies the show for me.

Eh I didn't really like show too much. Had so neat ideas but characters and plot holds it back for me. Also the monster reveal was kinda a bit silly as well.

Yeah this show is not good. Its concept is kinda brilliant but the execution is just so incredibly poor.

- The dialogue is absurd. These people aren't talking to each other, they're monologueing. It's terrible.
- The pacing. The show moves at a snail's pace. There's some good stuff but it's pretty much 5 minutes per episode.
- The ending. Man, that was the most pretentious, tedious monologue I've ever heard. It's supposed to be this profound moment but damn it's so bad
- Not a lot of interesting characters.
- Way, way, WAY too much religion-themed dialogue. I understand it's a religious island with a group of very religious people, but holy shit. I swear half the show is literally you watching people pray to god or allah or sing religious songs in church.
- The kind of out of nowhere racism against the sheriff in later parts of the show felt very forced

Now for the positives:

- Hamish Linklater is an incredible actor. His performance is captivating, especially later on in the show.
- The build-up to the actual midnight mass is incredible. Great sense of dread, and the payoff is actually very okay.
- Rahul Kohli is an extremely likeable guy, steals the show in every scene.

I'd rank this way above Bly Manor but below Hill House in terms of overall enjoyment. Haunting of Hill House was pretty good with some legit spooks, Bly Manor was profoundly bad and this is just... Meh, I guess.

Kohli is a breakout star. He was criminally underused in I, Zombie but he is KILLING IT in these Flanagan shows. While I am glad he may be in his orbit for recurring roles I just hope he gets the vehicle he deserves to showcase his talent and get him more recognition.

It starts really slow, but the acting and storytelling are on-point. Would easily recommend it to anyone who's OK w/a small amount of horror.

Overall I thought it was decent. I feel like it could have been a few episodes shorter though as I basically understood all the messages / meanings it was trying to convey.

Some of the monologues also went on a bit too long, but generally had a purpose.

The anti muslim sentiments felt very forced, but obviously are real world scenarios.

The man who played the priest did a great job.

I don't know, all those Flanagan shows (Hill House, Bly Manor and now Midnight Mass) feel a bit like Rosamunde Pilcher tries to do horror.
Which is sad, because he did a lot of awesome movies.

Wait, bly manor was based on something?

The main story it was based on was The Turn of the Screw. There are single episodes based on The Romance of Certain Old Clothes and The Jolly Corner, and it weaves in plots from both Owen Wingrave and Sir Edmund Orme, all ghost stories by Henry James.

Hill House is more traditional "haunted house" style horror. There's always something going on in the background, and it has one of the greatest jump scares of all time.

Bly Manor is more of a gothic romance that deals with the horror of outliving the person you love. For that reason, a lot of people have trouble connecting with it if they don't have a spouse, SO or whatever.

Personally, if I HAD to choose one, I'd pick Bly Manor because I thought it was really heartfelt and I loved the story they told. I'm also a huge fan of the story it was based on, The Turn of the Screw. They're both fucking fantastic, however.

I finished it last night and thought the last episode was the weakest by a huge margin. None of it landed for me at all.

Still really enjoyed it overall but don't be fooled by the 10/10 reviews.

Hamish Linklater was incredible even with a frankly absurd amount of monologues but each one was spectacular and it was really hard to take your eyes off him. Not to everyone's taste I'm sure but one of the best performances I've seen in a TV show probably ever.

The boat scene was amazing as well.

Bev made me want to strangle her through the screen so I guess she did a good job.

I found the first half of the series much better than the second half and felt it started to unravel once the mystery started to come out.

Without getting into spoilers the make-up was terrible and like a amateur production sticking talcum powder in actors hair. It made it really obvious that something was going to happen to certain characters. And one characters old women acting was like something out of a children's TV show or maybe someone doing a bad Mrs Doubtfire impression.

Just finished episode 5. Not really getting the “monologing” complaint. Yes, there’s a few moments but it’s really good dialogue.
