Milo Yiannopoulos is Going on Real Time with Bill Maher

Status
Not open for further replies.
I mean above post (crossing eden) is why i hoping Bill does his homework and realizes who he is dealing with. Listen, i have no doubt in my mind if Bill knows what the fuck is going on he wont stand for it, like, there is no way in hell Bill condones the shit that comes out of Milo. Just not who the guy is. So hopefully he has taken the time since he booked to dude to study up cause when he was on Van Jones he seemed to act like he didnt know much beyond he was potentially a seriously awful person.

Yeah I hope he does actually. Bill brought him up twice the past few episodes and wasnt sure who Milo really was.

He has good prep though for his guests.

Hello, my name is Yves Guillemot, Vivendi S.A.'s Employee of the Month!
You really don't, huh?

You don't look around at 2017 and automatically understand why a fascist troll who routinely weaponizes his followers to harass innocents would be reason for protest?

That "sudden outrage" (which isn't sudden at all, it's a years-long response to his gamergate abuses) really doesn't make any sense to you at all? You can't see your way towards even mildly understanding the pushback, considering where we are right now, and the tenor of the country in general?

That context carries no weight with you?
Critical thinking is too hard.

Actually what you mentioned does.

I am referring to the posts where we need to call Maher bigoted for his stance on islam and religion. This hasnt changed, wont change, and never will.

Do you want to keep labeling people bigots when you probably only listen to half of what they say? But liberals go down this weird path of throwing people under the bus when people Like Maher and Harris are like on your side 95 percent of the time.

So please by all means keep doing it because this wont work. Ever. Stop.

So please by all means keep doing it because this wont work. Ever. Stop.

Doing what won't work? Calling out bullshit when it surfaces? You're indulging in that same behavior right now, though. And I don't think it's pointless, or useless, or even unproductive. I disagree with your stance (which seems to be 'calling bullshit on Maher for his anti-Muslim rhetoric is unfair when he agrees with you on so many other things') but I don't think your raising that point is something you should stop because it'll never work.

However, I do want to ask why your primary concern is that Bill Maher's reputation isn't being maligned as opposed to almost every other concern raised by Milo's potential appearance on Bill's show.

How can a Gay man, of all people be this misogynistc, homophobic conservative and racist at the same time?

It would almost be interesting if this wasn't so scary :(

But its your bullshit that isnt going to work. It didnt work during the election. Did calling Trump a Bigot, or a sexist or whatever else during the election help our cause? No it didnt. I agree we need to call this out when its really there, but here you go again calling Maher anti-Muslim which shows your lack of knowledge about his stance on Muslims. Its annoying and counter productive to the conversation.

I am not worried about Maher's reputation for inviting Milo onto his show. Its Bill's show on a premium cable channel that most people dont watch because it is mostly a debate\interview segments. I mean I doubt he does Daily Show numbers. He can choose to take his show in whatever direction he wants, whether you agree or disagree with who he invites. Dave Packman invited Richard Spencer onto his show for an interview and got shit about it.

I'm so fucking sick of the lot of you who keep trying to dangle future American elections on a stick into these conversations when bigotry is rightfully being called out.

"WELL TRUMP WON SO DON'T CALL THAT BIGOT A BIGOT BECAUSE THAT'S HOW YOU LOST TO TRUMP AND YOU'LL LOSE TO TRUMP AGAIN IF YOU DON'T DO WHAT I SAY".

Get out with that bullshit. You have been trying to sell that shit for weeks and its not sticking, nor will it ever. If you thought Trump winning was going to usher in an era where hatred could be peddled without being called out, its time to admit (and for the love of god ACCEPT) you were wrong.

Privileged people can afford to be callous hypocrites. Some of them even figure out how to profit by throwing their own people under the bus.

I said people are calling Maher out for anti-Muslim rhetoric. He has said anti-Muslim things. I never called him "anti-Muslim" at any point in this thread anywhere. My "lack of knowledge" is, amazingly, unknown to you because I've never actually expressed any opinion of the man's bigotry, presumed or otherwise.

So again: what is it about the prospect of someone pointing out a thing Maher has actually done before that's got you screeching the thread to a stop to wag finger at people for being "counterproductive to the conversation" when your grip on what the conversation even is seems to be pretty slippery, considering you're currently accusing a person in it (me) of saying things he never said and then using those statements as proof of how counterproductive his "liberal bullshit" is at "achieving goals."

You're basically making priority #1 "Defend Bill Maher's Reputation From The Liberal Huns" and that's weird, Crab.

If that's all it takes to derail you, that's not the fault of the "illiberal left," to improperly use a completely made up and meaningless phrase someone tried to drop like rabbit pellets earlier in the thread. That's on you. That's you deciding what needs to take precedence in a thread about whether or not Milo Yiannopoulous deserves the platform Bill Maher is about to give him is keeping Bill Maher's reputation spit polished and shiny.

Those are your priorities.

My question is why is that the immediate place to put those priorities for you? Why is it that MAHER"S reputation being even slightly maligned is the thing that prompts you to speak up?

Do you honestly believe that Donald Trump won this most recent election because people couldn't let certain hurtful behaviors on the part of otherwise faithful allies slide? You honestly think that is a primary cause? Of all the simultaneous aspects that led to this moment in history, people's inability to let Bill Maher's past statements be bygones is the real problem here?

Really, Crab?

It's really transparent, it's just white supremacists who see this as their big chance. The whole thing falls apart when you look at any past election (the pendulum always swings back) and trump's insanely low approval rating (it won't be a trick they pull off twice)

I'm not sure that he's demonstrated a hint of conscience at all. And why start now, when riling up loud angry idiots has served him so well?

Self hatred.
Or just plain old hypocrisy. It's actually not so hard to compartmentalize and see yourself as separate from a group you belong to by definition.

Idk what we are arguing. My point earlier in the thread was that Mayer has had really strange conservatives on his show. I mean Coulter said something directly racist to a panelist maybe last year maybe? She can be a nasty one. I am not sure if she is worse than Milo.

I guess my question, is this the straw that breaks the camels back? Okay. It's confusing to me since he has had these people on before. Maher can take care of himself. I remember when he slammed the Pope and everyone got outraged about that. Conservatives petitioned to get him thrown off the air.

In the end of this upsets people that's fine. He will still have his show next week and HBO will probably still book him through until Maher is old and ready to retire. I can defend Maher for doing what he does and if it bothers people that's their prerogative. I like the show and while I don't agree with him on everything, I like the controversy that surrounds him to be interesting. Liberals will continue to hate him and so will conservatives.

I look forward to watching many many more years of his show. Unless he turns ultra conservative.

Lots of shitty Milo memes for a thread about being upset that he's is getting a venue to spread his shit.

Alright, well I'll admit this made me laugh.

Weirdly, I only know 90% of the toxic shit this guy says from GAF. I think I have read 2 things he has ever scribbled?

I dunno what any of that means or adds up to, but yeah... amusing to realize this place is his platform for me.

I remember he started a college scholarship for white men because they were losing opportunities to minorities via affirmative action and begged alt-right reddit for donations. Turns out he ran away with the money shortly after. That was amazing. lol

So you don't see it very well, but do you see the white part on the top, the one of the Nazis did not have that. That is the white crown, so that is either the one of WW1 or 1813 or 1824 or something during this time period; so he picked the wrong one to make a Nazi statement. So this either makes him a huge troll and everybody falls for it or just a huge dumb ass.

German here.
There are two types of people who wear the "Eiserne Kreuz".
Bundeswehr (German Army) staff on duty and neo nazis.

Here are some German neo nazi hooligans at Euro 2016:
o-DEUTSCHE-facebook.jpg

....and here are some regular German football fans:

No normal person in Germany would ever openly wear an Iron Cross or the old Reichskriegsflagge (the black-white-red one) in public. It's not illegal to do, but those symbols are tainted because Neo Nazis use them as a substitute since swastikas and stuff are outlawed.

I guess you don't think the swastika is a nazi icon either.

And people here are talking about intellectual dishonesty? Of course it is, but they're not even remotely the same thing. The fact that you equate them is exactly what's bothering me.

It's not a word that should be used lightly, and he's baiting you into calling him that so he can use it against you because there's nothing concrete to substantiate it, so in fact you're empowering him.

If it was really that easy that would be great, but it is not.

For example it is also part of the heavy metal and biker scene even in Germany. It was even in the Werner movie because of that.

Even TV personalities are wearing it and you can get it as a fashion statement. And also das Bundesverdienstskreuz the highest reward for a civil person in Germany and it also still looks like the iron cross.

He is a troll. He throws darts in every direction and checks out afterwards where they stick. And the ones that work he repeats because he knows that will increase his popularity. It even worked in this context, look at how many people quoted him.

And he is really good at that. Look at the books, he could have had Babar books on his lap and people would have assumed he was into Elephant poaching.

I like it how some of those fuckers dye their hair blond to appear more aryan. Geert Wilders is another example.

I've met some horrendous homosexual people, not in-the-closet (and / or self-hating) homosexuals either. This person for instance who keeps posting racist, pro-Trump shit all the time:

Personally, I don't seem to have any American friends who consider voting for Trump other than a European, newly-naturalized gay person whom I remember traveling to Canada to merry his boyfriend. Yup, but hey, gotta stop dem Muslims.

Statistically homosexuals make / made up ~5% in most societies. Not a specific part of those societies, but their entirety. Hence they must also include the people you described above.

I think this video sums up why its dangerous to not allow someone to have a platform regardless of what they preach .

But, discussing with him, counter his points, trying to expose him is a lot of hard work and he even might fight back. Using the widest brush, calling him a Nazi and trying to silence him is so much easier and you are surrounded by people who think the same thing reaffirming the whole time that it is the right thing.

I'm sorry, but seriously fuck Jonathan Pie and the garbage he spews, I'm so tired of seeing people post his misdirections and misunderstandings of the situations. He hasn't gotten a single grasp of how dangerous his arguments have been throughout combatting the rise of far-right ideology.

"People vote for fascists because you call their views bigoted!" aka coddle the bigots otherwise they'll just vote for a fascist!

"Stop protesting against giving platforms to neo-nazis" aka just ignore the neo-nazi and he'll go away by himself.

He says neither of those things in this video. It is all about how punching so called nazis is only helping them and trying to silence them only makes them look like the victim and helps them to get even more support.

This isn't a movie where the villain suddenly gets a conscience. He has a reputation to uphold too of being a hateful person. Maybe when he's old in his 50s and has little power, he'll change but not right now. Not when this is all so lucrative for him.

I think Bill needs to get a psychologist on and just go all Nietschze/Yung on his ass.

Just totally break him down. Question every single hidden motive, fear, and insecurity.

Because underneath all the bluster and need to feel loved (famous, part of a community of hatred)... it's just a little kid crying out for help.

You cannot fight someone like this by playing their game. Don't even answer any questions or suppositions he has. Change the narrative. Insult his intelligence. Call him a psycho. And prove it. Suggest psychiatric treatment. Etc. Just lay anything on him that he isn't quite used to.

Nah, punching Richard Spencer worked out. He's worried about going out. He's not a fan of memes anymore when he's the subject. By his own admission.

“I’m afraid this is going to become the meme to end all memes. That I’m going to hate watching this.”

“I was planning to go out tomorrow during the Women’s March to do some journalism but I can’t do that anymore. I have reached a stage of being a public figure where I am going to be recognised and then be attacked."

“I am worried about going out to dinner on an average Tuesday because these people are roaming around.”

Notice no one has talked about him in the news since then?

In germany it's illegal to say the stuff people like Milo and Spencer are preaching. They would actually go to prison for it or have to pay a hefty sum.. It's actually pretty nice to have set the bar somewhere above "just tell a university it's OK to openly discriminate Transgenders" and "We really should listen to his ethnic cleansing proposals".

At some point, you really have to take a step back and appreciate how revolutionary the change has been in Germany since 1945.

A complete and utter turnaround, from fascist totalitarianist genocide, to rich democracy with strong European and world-leading diplomatic ties. And in the face of mounting global chaos spurred by Putin and Trump and their antidemocratic disinformation campaigns, and the influx of refugees fleeing ISIS-destroyed impoverished Middle Eastern lands... Angela Merkel is essentially a hero.

History will look fondly upon both Merkel and Germany.

WTF. You're gravely mistaken if you believe people like him can be shut down by making better points. Have you heard the things he says? Everyone who's not an awful hateful piece of shit makes better points and has the moral high ground. None of that matters.

Facts and good arguments don't matter to the people he's reaching, and they don't protect his victims. There's literally nothing to be gained by giving him a platform. His whole schtick sidesteps the formal trappings of reasonable debate and goes straight for the gut. He's all about encouraging division and inciting harassment by telling small minded, resentful people that they're in the right when they indulge their nastiest and most petty impulses.

MUnited83

For you.
This whole new trend I've noticed lately of preventing people from TALKING, is really bumming me out. I completely understand the feelings and dislike towards certain people, but everyone should have the right to speak wherever they want. It's what we need more of, discussion and understanding from all sides.

This is all super similar to when I would hear far-right religious entrenched folks trying to stop the "vile atheist heathens" from speaking on shows, because they are spreading their message of a sinful life and being against god.

There are some people out there that I absolutely dislike and would really wish they would stop speaking out, but I absolutely believe they should be able to without opposition.

There are strong views on all sides... but all sides deserve to be able to talk about it... Like it or not, there are people like this that exist and shunning them out is not the way to get through things and make society better.
Milo doesn't just talk. He literally commits crimes on stage. Nobody should be allowing Milo to talk on campus or peddle his bullshit anywhere else.

But, discussing with him, counter his points, trying to expose him is a lot of hard work and he even might fight back. Using the widest brush, calling him a Nazi and trying to silence him is so much easier and you are surrounded by people who think the same thing reaffirming the whole time that it is the right thing.
He is a Nazi. Discussing with him will do jackshit. People have discussed with those deplorable fuckwits several times. Can you guess how that worked out?

I could explain now, that for example in the Werner movies the bikers actually fought the neo nazis, but I doubt that you would be interested. Or that there is a nazi scene within the biker community but there is also a huge part which is not. That there are nazis in the heavy metal scene and there are people who not and both use the iron cross. But are you really interested in anything which is not black and white?

For example Wagner that he was with the democrats during the 1848 revolution but also wrote anti-Semitic junk. Are you really interested in anything grey in a pure black & white world which you prefer? I know a pure black and white world is very easy to understand but unfortunately it is not like this in reality, people and the world are complicated.

I dont think that outright insulting him (calling him a psycho) is the way to go.

From my POV, if Maher actually wants to get something substantial out of him, he needs to confront him with what he said in the past. We have seen it time and time again that people like him (Ann Coulter, Tomi Lahren) will go soft when they are in a more normal environment.
If he is asked normal questions in this environment, he will give a fitting answer that will probably be borderline racist etc...but he wont go all out.

Confronting him with above quotes could be a start, and then dont let him get away. Stay on topic, ignore his pivots and "tongue in cheek" humor...the "you know i am just doing it for fun" type of answers. Maher should stay as serious as possible. IF he actually wants to get his worldview to the surface.

How is that even possible? That they can not fight back, that the press can not talk about them, that you can not support them. So you are telling me, if Milo attacks somebody there is no way to help the person anymore, she or he has no way to fight back, there are no media outlets who want to talk about it and if you you ever fight against Milo he can send you to the phantom zone and you will never ever to be able to escape or fight back.

Ok, that is impressive.

That is what he is known for. How many people do you think know about the 1848 revolution vs those who know he was big with the Nazis?

When someone wears German war memorabilia, names himself after a composer who was essentially used to provide the audio for the Nazi movement, and dedicates his life to spreading anti-Semitic, homophobic, and racist views, how can you be so up in arms over them being labelled a neo-Nazi?

Why are people giving this guy airtime? Yuck.

Also, from Wikipedia:

While Yiannopoulos is openly gay, he has stated that gay rights are detrimental to humanity, and that gay men should "get back in the closet". He has described being gay as "aberrant" and "a lifestyle choice guaranteed to bring [gay people] pain and unhappiness".
How the hell can somebody be openly gay and hold these beliefs?

Welcome to the fallout of harassment campaigns. You followed gamergate and its survivors, right? The survivors haven't got compensation still. Many women and other survivors aren't helped by law enforcement and institutions on this front. The powers that be still don't get it or how to handle it. Thousands of hate messages, doxxing, and death threats and still very little help. The institutions have failed them. Milo got banned from Twitter only recently, that's it, after willfully engaging in harassment campaigns. So cue the lack of surprise when the marginalised don't want to give destructive people the platform knowing there is little consequence for their actions.

Okay, I explain it slowly.

When a Milo supporter murders someone, you can't help that someone. That already happened.

Secondly, do you understand what harrassment does to people?

According to the Cyberbullying Research Center, "there have been several high‐profile cases involving teenagers taking their own lives in part because of being harassed and mistreated over the Internet, a phenomenon we have termed cyberbullicide – suicide indirectly or directly influenced by experiences with online aggression."

Cyberbullying is an intense form of psychological abuse, whose victims are more than twice as likely to suffer from mental disorders compared to traditional bullying.[113]

The reluctance youth have in telling an authority figure about instances of cyberbullying has led to fatal outcomes. At least three children between the ages of 12 and 13 have committed suicide due to depression brought on by cyberbullying, according to reports by USA Today and the Baltimore Examiner.

Quoting wiki here. In short, harrassment silences people.

Yes trokil, if you would want to, you could try to help his victims. If they would be open to receiving help. I know thats a big if.

Yes trokil, if media would want to, they could try to help his victims. If they would be open to receiving help. I know thats a big if.

As it is right now, these are all ifs. As in not happening.

What is happening is that Milo gets the attention, TV show appearances and bookdeals.

Milo, the Nazi, is not getting silenced.

Milos victims are getting silenced.

These are the intended effects of his harrassment.

And you are not fighting against it.

White supremacists deserve the benefit of doubt that they might not be Neo-Nazis. Reasons.
