People give so few fucks they no one even remembers that the Trump justice department is no longer fighting for trans rights. One of the areas where the "liberal community" is pretty pathetic.
It's horrific.

The strange thing is, I'm sure many of these people when asked would say they're totally for supporting the trans community, Maher included. They know it's seen as the moral position. But when push comes to shove, they aren't there.

So Maher went in with minimal knowledge of the kind of individual he was dealing with and found some common ground with him thereby helping further normalise Milos bullshit?

Well colour me shocked, yes the panel may have torn him a new one but Maher has shown what a poor interviewer he is yet some folk will still hold him up as some kind of liberal beacon.

When they talked about his Twitter incident -- 'oh, I know, right! I don't even look at my feed anymore!' Could have called him out on egging on his degenerates to harass Leslie Jones and retweeting pictures of her depicted as a gorillas but no, just lulz.

This, where was he calling this tosser to account for knowingly spreading fake tweets he attributed to Jones giving his followers further incentive and justification to attack he? No fucking where, what a joke. It's clear Maher didn't do much, if any research on Milo or he just doesn't care as he could have nailed him on so many issues rather than joking along with Milo.

Imagine if Milo had said gay people shouldn't be able to marry and Maher had said "That's not unreasonable".

People really don't give a shit about transgender Americans, and it's disgusting.

Yeah I was disappointed about the cheering from that. It really disturbs me.

Yeah, I mean, look, for Maher, it is a complement, because Maher actually thinks Sam Harris and Hitchens are these genuine, liberal people, but they really aren't all that progressive.

Well the point is Hitchens and Harris are intelligent and can talk in a rational manner and are able to back up their points, which cannot be said for Milo.

Gay americans went through the same thing not that long ago, and still do to an extent. We can only hope education and the realization that we are all human being that deserve the same treatment and respect occurs sooner rather than later. Sadly we've got a long way to go. The overwhelming masses likely still don't comprehend the distinction between gender and sex, nor do they truly understand what gender dysphoria is in a meaningful way that enables empathy. Hell even with a family member who has transitioned my family of well educated individuals still think transgender and homosexual are synonymous, when this isn't the case. The amount of times they've unwittingly hurt my cousin or made them feel unwelcome truly breaks my heart. And they think nothing of it. People suck.

I dunno man. I don't really want to go into Hitchens and Harris, because this thread is about Milo, but sounding intelligent and being intelligent are definitely different things, and while Sam Harris can sound reasonable, he also in the same breath can support things like racial profiling.

I agree that Sam Harris and Hitchens sound more intelligent than Milo, and they also aren't / weren't making it a career like Milo to shit on literally everything that breathes that doesn't think exactly like them, but they've both fallen out of favor with me for various reasons. I do see your point, though.

This is a really disingenuous take on the left's response.

His presidency is a threat to the world full stop. The fact that people have moved their ire toward preservation of humankind and aren't focusing on the kind of justice we would be if he wasn't elected is hardly a sign of being "pathetic". I'd argue the opposite. If a person is spending all their time focusing on something like trans rights as the world burns down around them that is them putting their ego over the thriving of humanity.

After watching the segment and overtime, yeah... that was interesting. Milo is definitely something else.

His a pathetic joke at best.. he trolls at a level i've never seen before on serious matters. We call him Dangerous .. theres a reason his book is called Dangerous, his fully self aware of what he is doing yet he acts so light hearted in how he talks and composes him self, I honestly think theres a PR Firm his using to conjure up this image we see.

No surprise, Maher is a spineless hack. The political season got me into watching his show last year and anytime hes had on a controversial guest like Assange, Kelly Anne Conway, or Anne Coulter its just been embarrassing.

I agree. I mean, people think, oh, hey, they're cool with gay marriage and are atheists! Must be the left side of left!

Nope.

They're on the left, and they may be liberal and vote Democrat every 2 years, but that doesn't make anyone progressive.

And people were saying I was crazy to say there is a massive cross over of Maher, Harris, Dawkins, and Milos, Brietbart, and Trump.

The racism that Harris, Maher and Dawkins harbor, needs intellectual justification. Milos basically thinks the same framework of that sort of racist justification.

Maher and co. use that on Muslims, but Milos uses that on pretty much all minorities. I also said, other than the racist issues of Maher, he's just not very clever. And anyway, they believe in many of the same principles like racial profiling, not surprised at all to see they find common ground.

Nobody's asking everyone on the left to dedicate all their effort towards transgender issues. They're just asking for be bare minimum of seeing trans individuals as equals and opposing discrimination against them by default. If we can't even do that, we deserve to burn.

Sorry that trans rights for some people is literally their entire life. I'm sorry you don't understand what it's like to have basic rights be up for debate. This kind of thinking is exactly what I was talking about.

The thing that we do. Bill might not, but the left in general? We all identify the bigotry against trans people as a civil right issue. The way people are marginalized and the effects it has in things from employment discrimination to suicidality are appalling. Anybody who doesn't agree has serious issues with empathy.

My point is that we are right at the brink, the edge at which none of this stuff will matter if we step off the cliff.

To use personal financial contributions as an example of the finite nature of political might I'll point out my own shift from charities including animals rights, LGBTQ issues, and human trafficking entirely to the ACLU.

It's not because suddenly I don't care about those other issues. But if we lose our civil liberties then it's game over.

I think you're overthinking it.

This shtick is his career and he's been cultivating this personality for years. He might be heralded as this great whatever but he's just a professional troll. He doesn't have to worry about a damn thing going wrong because the worst case scenario in most professions, including but not limited to shootings at your own speaking engagements, are boons for him. He is propelled by the updraft of outrage and hate and his supporters love him for legitimizing it all.

He is an exceptional piece of shit is what I'm saying.

But we "all" don't. Bill Maher has a large audience among liberals. When he calls Milo's support of the bathroom bill "not unreasonable," he is saying something he assumes his audience will be okay with.

I'm sorry that I'm elevating the right of basic liberal democracy over any particular issue. I'd rather make sure we all survive with an intact free society than spend my time on any specific issue.

If you can't see why that matters you are being selfish and callous of everybody outside of yourself. That kind of thinking has more in common with the single-minded right than it does with interest in progress for everyone.

We're quite literally hanging on by a thread and you just care about the people who you identify with on a personal level.

Actually I've already donated multiple times to the ACLU, but unlike you I'm not going to shit post on why we can't manage to also focus on a community that needs our support.

Also if we're literally hanging on a thread you really should be out there volunteering and protesting instead of posting on this forum. You know since somehow you managed to post here while also doing other things *gasp*

I made a post a few dozen up about why we need to do multiple things at once. If you missed that it doesn't deprive my follow up statements of their context in the thread.

I don't support human rights because it gets in the way of democracy is the dumbest thing I've heard all week.

And that includes Trump's impromptu ranting.

Basic liberal democracy includes civil rights for all. It can't exist without it. I'm not part of the lgbtq community, but I understand their rights are my rights as a citizen. The treatment of others is a reflection of our democracy.

This free intact society you speak of, can't be exclusive as you're promoting with your attitude towards a fellow citizens suffering.

Equal rights isn't a "particular issue" in a free society. It's a prerequisite.

He cowered when he should have stood up. Milo is the lowest level scumbag. It's no wonder he loves Trump because they cater to the same empty-minded bigots. Larry and Nance grilling that little prick did exactly what Bill missed.

Normalizing a guy like Milo is exactly what he wants.

I don't even know why you even responded to me because all I said was liberals can do way better when it comes to trans rights.

I totally agree. But there are degrees.

Trump wants to take away our right to a free and open press. The right wants to curb voting rights.

Without those nothing else matters because we can't be informed, and we can't impact our government. Putting those above everything else is only rational.

If anybody but this tangerine fascist was in charge we could continue the march towards progress. Instead we have to defend the right to even be able to be heard.

I don't even know why you even responded to me because all I said was liberals can do way better when it comes to trans rights.

Then I was wrong. You are absolutely right. The way the right demonizes anybody who isn't like them is part of why they continue to want to deprive people of their right to respect.

If you debate and reason with Milo, you lose. He's not going to engage substantially and earnestly.

If you lose your cool, you definitely lost.

Ignoring whether or not Maher should have had Milo on the show, finding some common ground with this guy isn't horrible when talking to someone like that.
Bill was in a unique position for that as he too is a galvanizing figure.
Bill had a fine line to walk and he didn't really do a good job here.

Trolls are trolls and really don't need to be anywhere else but their safe spaces. Milo belongs on the internet and in forums among his followers. He really shouldn't be invited on TV for a show that encourages earnest debate.

It is horrible though when the common ground is attacking a marginalized group.

That "It's not unreasonable" line is worrisome because it gives Milo's bigotry, and not just Milo himself, more legitimacy.

Anyone in this thread who argued for this: You own this shit.

It's the reason why liberals and the left lose and will continue to lose.

Milo played Bill and many people in this thread like fucking fools, and this won't be the last time it happens, either. They'll fall for this same shit over, and over, and over.

"DEBATE HIS IDEAS SHOW PEOPLE HOW RIDICULOUS THEY ARE STOP SHUTTING DOWN SPEECH"

And the right just laughs, and laughs, and laughs, because you do their work for them.

Well done.

I didn't argue for it, but I did think Bill would push back. Instead he was a wet blanket. Thank god the panel had Wilmore and to a lesser extent Nance. And Jack Kingston? Guy is a fucking embarrassment to even a shithole like Georgia.

Holy shit, wasn't there a post somewhere here that predicted exactly this? Like, word for word.

This was predictable from the beginning.

Milo was mentioned 1-2 weeks ago on Real Time in the context of the left protesting Milo and in turn Milo's upcoming book spikes in sales.

From what I could tell, Bill wasn't even all that familiar with the guy. Called him a provocateur and left it at that.

Bill being turned away from speaking at a University has always bothered him.

"Don't take the bait, liberals" is entirely predictable from him. He constantly tells the left to stop whining and to pick and choose their battles.

So there was no doubt Bill was going to find some common ground with Milo here.

I'm from the camp that fascism is multifaceted, and every attempt is an attempt to dominate our way of life and destroy our society.

There's enough to fight on all fronts. We are the majority after all.

But, I see where you're coming from.

Throwing marginalized groups under the bus is a grand tradition of liberal politics, I dunno what folks were expecting.

Although I'm not surprised Milo's been invited onto Real Time, Bill Maher has generally invited moderate conservatives on his show. Maher values a dissenting viewpoint and welcomes non-liberals for coming onto his show.
He generally doesn't invite a panelist who's going to shill for Trump for a whole half hour.
