Ok fine. Then perhaps you can tell me, someone not very familiar with Milo. Why do so many flock to him and listen to his bs? Because what I saw tonight on Bill Maher was an opportunist who gets off on getting people worked up.
Most people have a conscience that prevents them from expressing their inner awfulness in a public way -- they're afraid of what people will think of them if they voiced some of their private beliefs that they might recognize are troubled, but haven't made the effort to remedy (most people are lazy and just go with their gut because it takes effort and uncomfortable thinking to get over their own prejudices; doesn't feel good to admit to yourself that you may be bad).
Milo does not -- he doesn't seem to challenge his own thoughts, he doesn't seem to keep his thoughts to himself, he seems to embrace those thoughts, so for bigots that agree with his points of view, he's seen as brave and refreshing and exciting. They envy the perceived freedom he has to speak his mind without being afraid of what others think of him.
edit: and I use the term "seem to" because I personally think Milo is mostly a provocateur. He may hold those bigoted views, he may not -- it doesn't make much difference, he's a piece of shit either way, and the damage he causes is just as real even if he's not.
edit2: and Milo also has the bonus of, like #notyourshield, wearing the avatars of marginalized groups. People can point to him being gay (though he's said he just did it to piss off his parents...) to shield from homophobia, his black "boyfriend" to shield from racism, and his jewish ancestry to shield from anti-semitism. These are intentional props that reinforce his persona as a contrarian. They make him more marketable and they're also like magnets to bigots that want to point and say "look, one of <insert group> agrees with me so I can't be bigoted!"
Ugh.
