Although I'm not surprised Milo's been invited onto Real Time, Bill Maher has generally invited moderate conservatives on his show. Maher values a dissenting viewpoint and welcomes non-liberals for coming onto his show.
He generally doesn't invite a panelist who's going to shill for Trump for a whole half hour.

He has Anne Coulter on all the time.

It's the reason why liberals and the left lose and will continue to lose.

Milo played Bill and many people in this thread like fucking fools, and this won't be the last time it happens, either. They'll fall for this same shit over, and over, and over.

"DEBATE HIS IDEAS SHOW PEOPLE HOW RIDICULOUS THEY ARE STOP SHUTTING DOWN SPEECH"

And the right just laughs, and laughs, and laughs, because you do their work for them.

Well done.

If a movement can't win a debate with someone like Milo, it deserves to lose.

To be fair the literal last time he had her on the show he could barely contain the sentiment of 'dear jesus im staring at crazy'. I mean, this was before the election when she was 100% certain Trump was gonna win and he simply couldnt believe it. He almost treated her like a mental patient and even urged his crowd to be nice to her. I think maybe he got a little shook from how right she ended up being.

The funny part is that Maher didn't even debate Milo.

All those arguments that you should debate these perspectives instead of shutting them down... And he ends up being more passive than fucking Jimmy Fallon. Hypocritical self-righteous horseshit.

so this seems like it went exactly how many of us said it would, as bill is a shitty, islamaphobic centrist and not the liberal master debater some propped him up to be

but congrats on giving trash another venue, because something something free speech of your libs will somehow elect trump again

You can't debate a person that denies facts.

Even if you could, Milo is in this for the attention. He wants as much of it as he can for as long as he can. He doesn't care about nuance or critical thinking or improving society, just whatever inflates his ego.

Nigga hush. Maher ain't the movement, he's just a comedian who had Milo on for ratings.

You can't get anything out of a debate with Milo because he's not trying to convince anyone. He's just there to agitate, entertain, and profit.

What the hell... I'd never actually seen Milo speak. He acts like a precocious little girl who is caught in a lie, and tries to be cute about it. If Trump wasn't the President of the United States, I would find it impossible to believe that anyone in the world would take that fool seriously. But hey, this is the world we live in apparently. Look out for flying pigs.

(Mr. Maher replied: “Let’s not pick on fellow HBO stars. There are so many other people.”)
He doesn't want him to talk shit about a fellow colleague but transgender people is fair game. Come the fuck on Maher.

I only started watching Maher around the election time via youtube clips (Im Australian, he's not on tv here).

I have found I agree on a lot of what he said from the clips I have seen.

I had no problem with Maher having Milo on the show. However, the fact that he allowed Milo to say his position and then not point out how it attacks civil rights of transgender people, is as bad as accepting the point of view.

Maher's decision to have Milo on the show was based around having an opportunity to show the world that Milo's position on a range of issues is incorrect.

He had a great chance to validate his decision to have Milo on the show, and he didnt take it.

Now, my opinion of Maher has changed.

Yeah, Lena Dunham and Amy Schumer are off limits, but it's fine to generalize all transgenders as rapists who are coming for your children.

How do you 'win' a debate against someone who morphs positions and attitudes depending on the audience? There's only one thing driving milo and that's enriching milo, something maher just helped him with

Well we can thank the Berkeley protests for milos rise to national prominence. Him and his poorly delivered argument for free speech should not have been shut down, it should have been ignored.

Insulting people will never prove a point.

If you ridicule people like Trump or Milo they break and they will lose support. Problem is people like Maher treating them like they have a valid point that is worth exploring. They don't. Make that clear to the people watching. That will educate the people supporting these people without attacking them.

Basic liberal democracy includes civil rights for all. It can't exist without it. I'm not part of the lgbtq community, but I understand their rights are my rights as a citizen. The treatment of others is a reflection of our democracy.

This free intact society you speak of, can't be exclusive as you're promoting with your attitude towards a fellow citizens suffering.

Equal rights isn't a "particular issue" in a free society. It's a prerequisite.

Hmm... by this definition, has a free liberal democracy ever existed anywhere?

His arguments may look poorly delivered to us but dumb fucks eat that shit up.

Trump became president on saying stupid things and delivering very poor arguments.

Milo is another classic example why feeding the troll is a bad thing.

Whenever people call him out on his extremely retarded ideas, he can reframe the entire thing as "deliberately testing the social limits of free speech" to completely dodge any sort of responsibility he has to have for his ideas while making himself look good since, well, everyone likes free speech and some people really do go too far in getting upset by him.

I chose to blame Bill Maher for having him on and shrugging at his bigotry and calling some of it reasonable rather than the folks who actively take a stand against his bigotry

Milo wasn't looking to debate. Guy like him, as well as Nazis and White Supremacists, aren't looking to debate. They want to spread their racist ideas like a virus so they look for points of infection, like TV shows and events at colleges.

You can't debate him because his ideas aren't based in logic and he isn't looking to defend them. He isn't looking to tear down the other side's argument either, if he does it's just a bonus. He's looking to spew racist shit and spread the infection.

Shit dude, in this very thread you can see people who, after seeing him making transphobic comments, think he isn't so bad because of how he carried himself. "Oh he was glib and fun," and he spewed hate speech.

Ideas like his take hold because people like him, marginally clever bigots with a bit of charisma, are given a platform and their ideas are made to be equal as a result of sitting at the table with everyone else. This instance was made worse by Maher normalizing his shit, essentially helping him do his job, but even if he had attacked him relentlessly Milo would have won.

It's not about winning a debate, by engaging in the debate like this you already lose it. You can't win a debate against someone with no shame, against someone whose ideas are not based in reality, against someone who isn't actually debating you. People like this don't want a debate, they want a platform. The only way you win is by attacking them and their ideas relentlessly and by keeping them both in the gutter where they belong.

If you think this enemy can be fought through traditional debate, by putting their hate next to our ideals and comparing their merits, you have no idea who you're even fighting.

Well we can thank the Berkeley protests for milos rise to national prominence. Him and his poorly delivered argument for free speech should not have been shut down, it should have been ignored.

Insulting people will never prove a point.

So Maher gets a free pass for giving him a platform, helping him normalize his ideas, and never even challenging him? Maher did not need to invite him on his show, that was his choice and he needs to live with it.

Also, Milo was threatening to out illegal immigrants at Berkley during his talk. Everywhere he goes he looks to harass local minority populations, especially the most vulnerable like illegal immigrants and trans people. He's not just speaking, he's actively doxxing people. You can't just ignore that.

As a socialist, this thread incapsulates the very essence of why I don't really care for so called liberals like Maher.
"but we must debate him"
*ends up blowing him*

Remember to cradle those balls ya'll.

liked the part where they all discussed trump at the table and the scientology bit. no need to give people who spread hate (bill's own words) a platform. what good could possibly come from it? This wasn't a debate. This was 10 minutes of Milo running through as many talking points as he could before Bill cut him off. What's the point of that? He basically just handed him a mic and said, "here you go kid, let er' rip"

Debatability does not dictate the moral validity of a position, David Wong writer for Cracked.com

Seems telling that you're ready to sacrifice human rights on the altar of logical fallacy

It's not like what happened was unprecedented either. This shit always happens when you give white supremacists, nazis, and such a platform like this. The most famous example is Oprah. In the 90's she had a group of white supremacists on her show, to try and understand and debate them. Instead of engaging in debate they just spewed as much racism as they could in the time allotted. Looking back on it she's said she learned not everyone should be given a platform to speak from.

Maher should have known this would happen, everyone arguing against it in this thread knew it would turn out this way.

just because maher lacks argumentation skill doesn't mean an idea cannot be debated

You don't get it, Milo wasn't looking to debate. His types never do. They're looking to spread a disease. You can't debate someone who will just ignore you and spew hate speech whenever you give them room to speak. They win just by taking the stage because they have a different goal than you or I. Their goal is to get on the stage and run through as much shit as is humanly possible so it can reach as many people as humanly possible.

Milo won the debate the second Maher invited him on the show.

I watched the vid, personally I kinda think Milo is a very well trained actor.

But I also think that he owned the shit out of Maher on his own program. Milo was actually a pretty charismatic orator whereas Maher was just kind of "NUHH UHH".

Without a scripted argument by his writers, Maher just has none of the nuance or debate skills that Stewart has. People called him a hack for a long time when Stewart and Colbert were dominant.

I don't think that's a long term solution. While it might score some quick laughs, it will just make the person defensive and shut down to any rational discussion. It will further divide us into our preconceived ideological foxholes.

You think Trump and Milo can still be turned? They need to be ridiculed and sidelined. Especially looking at their ego.

It's the only solution. The only way to beat them is to not give them a platform to speak from and attack them relentlessly. You need to make it so these ideas are beyond taboo in society. You need to drive these ideas underground and suffocate them because they second you give them a platform they just run through as many talking points as is humanly possible. Debating a nazi or a white supremacist or anyone of their ilk is like debating the most hate filled prerecorded message ever. You can't actually beat it because it doesn't care what you say. It's not looking to change minds, it's looking to spread a not-so-subliminal message like a virus through society. That's their only goal in situations like this. There's no winning, the second you think you can win you've already lost.

Yea but he wouldn't be on Maher if it wasnt for those protests making national news. They made national news because they weren't as peaceful as the previous protests. Maher is an opportunist, they brought the news of the week on for higher ratings. Money trumps ideology any day of the week for most people.

In theory I could see that working for a fragile snowflake like Trump (although in practice he kept it together for far longer than anyone expected).

But Milo? Ridicule Milo and he doesn't break, he thrives on it. Half his shtick is "I say really dumb things, and then when I get called on it I call the other guy stupid for taking me seriously."

Don't blame protesters for Maher chasing a payday. You see anyone else giving Milo a platform? Colbert? Fallon? Kimmel? It's on Maher and no one else, don't excuse his shit.

the point shouldn't be to shelter people from hate speech. all hate speech does is delegitimize the people using it

there was an opportunity to show the viewers how abhorrent milo/bannon/breitbart are, and even a mediocre debater could have taken advantage of that

Didn't really seem like a debate so much as Milo scurrying at every seemingly chance of rebuttal to something they could agree on. I've never seen him look so nervous -- it felt like navigation. Milo was talking constantly. Maher ate up the mutual ground pretty readily. I was hoping he wouldn't, but it's just his demeanor.

When Milo was on the panel, I was glad he got chewed out by all three. He looked like a fucking novice.

It's like nobody listens.

You guys keep saying the word "debate". You can't debate someone who isn't there to have a debate with you.

Like I said, it's the same fucking trap, over and over, and liberals keep falling into it, and they always will.
