And I'm sorry to say but if that's the card, I say USA takes it. :p

I'd love to. Might have to think hard about that. I hear TKO is offering packages for $900 (Canadian, presumably) for the flight, tickets in an "all-Canadian" section, and hotel room.

It'd be easier to go if it were during the summer when I'm out of school though.

HUGE UFC announcement? I can't imagine anything being bigger than the announcements made at UFC 56.

Maybe it will be UFC events in California?

I look forward to hearing about once a month shows and the Lightweights coming back. My expectations have gotten carried away lately.

(1/15/06) - (Rumors) There are Sherdog posts about a supposed merger between UFC & K-1. The posts link to a Sankei Sports report... except, the report is from May of 2005 when the press was in town for a Las Vegas show. And all that was stated in the report was that K-1 wanted to do a talent exchange with UFC.

There is no story at all.

http://www.puroresupower.com/

Some talent exchange woulda been fun though.

UFC is makin this annoucement sound huge... it better not just be rogan/snipes.. or an event in staples center... or bloody lightweights. I mean.. are either of those really going to shake up the mma world? Nope.

I'm dreaming of a Pride/UFC Superevent!

That would be fucking amazing....

It will prolly end up being a biweekly/monthly ufc event on Spike :P

Oh well... im really hyped up for fight night tomorrow anyway! Good job UFC! :D

Freak show? There are a lot of good fights possible between the LHWs and the HWs, and throw in a few wild cards from the lower weights (gomi, henderson, saku?) and you have a tournament that has a lot of potential. Properly managed it'll be great.

Well, that's pointless. As if anyone under light-heavy has a snowball's chance in hell of winning.

...

Well, actually, as if anyone not named "Fedor Emelianenko" has a snowball's chance in hell of winning :lol

I can see some matchups for fighters only 1 weight division apart being compelling. But I don't know if I trust Pride to "properly manage" the matchups.

well, sure, if fedor's in it he's by far the favorite, but anything can happen. What about something along the lines of:

Fedor vs Arona rematch
Wandy vs Mirko rematch
Mauricio Rua vs Big Nog
Saku vs Henderson
Kharitonov vs Lil Nog
Hunt vs Gomi (battle of the chins!)
etc.

It's especially in the LHW vs HW stuff that makes the tournament interesting. Almost all the LHW guys are cutting from like 220, so they're not really disadvantaged.

Weight classes are good, but the japanese people love this sort of stuff and this could help a stagnant pride org get some ground on K-1 (which is for the better, occasional pride freakshow or no...)

Yeah, some good fights there...but again, just make it LHW + HW then, no need to kill any lightweights ;)

This Assuerio Silva guy looks ripped.

Tim looks so unathletic and awkward... which will make it all the more funny when he knocks Silvas head off tomorrow.

It will be great to see some MW vs HW fights. But yeah, there's bound to be a David vs Goliath match so I just hope David doesn't get too torn up.

Btw, Spiketv has a bunch of video interviews up but the new site design sucks with it's embeded wmv ads.

MMAWeekly.com your industry leader in MMA News has the inside track of at least one of the big announcements of the UFC. It appears there may not be just one announcement, but there may be more... like the last UFC pay per view that featured BJ Penn coming back to the UFC, (which you heard first on MMAWeekly.com), Tito facing Ken Shamrock on the Ultimate Fighter, plus Frank Mir facing Andrei Arlovski.

MMAWeekly.com has learned there is a potential for three substantial announcements at this show. It is unknown if there will be one announcement tonight or three.

1. MMAWeekly.com has learned that Royce Gracie has been seen in Las Vegas today and according to a few Gracie supporters, he is all set to face Matt Hughes in the UFC main event in May. It looks as though the match will take place at the 175 pound weight class in a non-title fight. According to the Nevada State Athletic Commission rules, Gracie will not be able to fight with a gi, a non-title fight would be three five minute rounds, which means Gracie would not be able to institute any special rules like he received in his last fight in K1 because of the Nevada State rules.

2. MMAWeekly.com has had various reports confirmed that the UFC will indeed debut for the first time in California. This event will most likely take place at Staples Center most likely in April. Some final negotiations are taking place, so look for an official announcement soon.

3. There is talk that the 155-pound division will make a comeback but it seems that it would happen no earlier than June. Still the UFC could have a tournament style format to crown a new champion spread out over a few shows or they could just bring two fighters back to fight for the title. While the tournament style is something the UFC said they wouldn't do, they could have a series of single fights spread out over a period of time to create a 155-pound champion.

Of the three things listed above, the fight between Gracie and Hughes seems like the sure fire bet for tonight. It doesn't mean there won't be more things coming, but from the reports that MMAWeekly has obtained, look for the fight to be the main announcement tonight.

Royce Vs Hughes is certainly interesting.. though I dont think its that big a deal. I couldnt care less about the lightweights

Hey all, i'm new to the OT board (just never bothered to look), but now that I see that there's an MMA thread... we'll now I have to participate.

Silva cut an interview where he talks a lot about his fight with Arona, as well as touching on the open weight GP, good stuff.

http://news.adcombat.com/article.html?id=10491

Do you want to face (Emelianenko) Fedor? Nobody 'WANTS' to face him. But, if they put me against him, I will fight him. I don’t say I can beat anyone, but I will face anyone. It’s not a fun thing to fight someone where you know you will win.

Welcome, Mr Random. Always a pleasure to welcome another MMA fan to the board. Enjoy your stay here in the OT.

And that's a great quote to hear from Silva. "Nobody 'WANTS' to face him." Coming from the Axe Murderer, that's quite a statement.

In other news, two matchups, and many participants announced for Pride 31.

Sperry vs. TK
And hot off the heels of his defeat of Mirko, Mark Hunt faces.......a 190-lbs Japanese boxer..... damn you Pride :(

Now, if Mino had've fought Zulu, he would have let himself get beaten around the ring for a round and a half before finally slapping on a sub to pull out the dramatic win.

With Fedor, we get a 30 second demolition ;)

Fedor is scary. Who'd want to fight him?

Anymore highlight clips online (from this ppv)?

Funny story, a guy walked up to me in the gym today and asked me if I did MMA because he had watched a video and thought I was one of the guys. I was flattered, but said nope.

I'm a big fan of both fighters but I'm more of a Couture fan so he's my pick to win 3rd rd tko. The pick is bias but I have my reasons too. I'm gonna count on Randy taking this to the ground at least once and with it, wear Chuck down enough so that the next takedown will be easier and so on until Chuck has nothing left. I know Chuck has a great chance of getting that KO punch and that he can go the distance striking but I think his grappling cardio is questionable. Especially on whether he can deliver a KO punch after some tough scrambling off the mat.

Now win or lose, Randy isn't retiring because he just signed a 3 fight deal. But if he loses, semi-retirement fighting legends matches would be best. I know some people find it boring when Randy is dominant in a fight but that's what I like best about his style. His total domination of Chuck then Tito was an MMA high for me.

As for the card, I think the main fights are good with top contenders like Mir, Babalu and Diaz all having tough bouts. The prelims are weak but I don't expect to see them anyway, unless they turn out to be good.

OK so Lidell Couture 3 is Sat

place your bets

A year ago, I would've said Couture without question. Now, I'm still going with Couture but I fear that the age may've caught up with him a hurry. Although he was impressive overall in the MVA fight, he looked somewhat tentative to me. Combine this with some of the things he's said in recent interviews and I really don't know how much gas he has left.

truffleshuffle83 said:
overall the card is pretty weak but heres hoping the iceman pushes the natural into retirement

As far as the card being week goes, eh, I don't know. The Diaz/Riggs and Babalu/MVA fights look great on paper. The Mir/Pe De Pano one could be pretty great as well depending on Mir's strategy.

It's been the exact opposite for me. With Randy looking into businesses after he's done fighting since last year, I was worried he was taking this match as a final payday. But with his new fight contract and the hunger he seems to have for that title in his interviews, I think we'll see him at his best mentally and hopefully physically. There's no denying his age but I think Captain America can defy age for a few more years. Glad to hear he was sparring with Arlovski too.
The Mir/Pe De Pano one could be pretty great as well depending on Mir's strategy.
I really hope this one turns into a grappling clinic.

Wow, this Pride card.....sucks:

http://www.sherdog.com/news/news.asp?n_id=3948

Mark Hunt vs Yosuke Nishijima
Tsuyoshi Kohsaka vs Mario Sperry
Mark Coleman vs Mauricio Rua
Sergei Kharitonov vs Alistair Overeem
Jon Olav Einemo vs Fabricio Werdum
Quinton Jackson vs Dong Sik Yoon
Pedro Rizzo vs Roman Zentsov
Josh Barnett vs Kazuhiro Nakamura

Wow, way to squander all those names.

No kidding.

How about putting
Rampage vs. Overeem
Shogun vs. Nakamura
Coleman vs. Kharitonov
Hunt vs. Rizzo
Barnett vs. Werdum

I guess I can see how Pride really just wants to set up the GP with this card, but still, not much to be excited about here. Coleman/Rua is the only remotely intriguing matchup there, and along with TK/Sperry are the only two fights that shouldn't be completely obvious blowouts.

Come on..it's not that bad a card. Certainly not one of the marquee events of the year, but not a bad start IMO.

Einemo vs Werdum is the sleeper on that card. Werdum's only loss was the split decision to Kharitonov, and from what I've heard about Einemo, he's a witch on the ground and could be a kind of "dark horse" in the HW division if he pans out. Like a Scandinavian Rodrigo Nogueira, if you will.

Is everyone assuming that Sergei just rolls through Overeem? While my money's with Sergei, I see this being at the very least an entertaining fight and at best, highly competitive. TK/Sperry is also likely to be very entertaining.

Coleman/Shogun will be significant for a number of reasons, but mostly because it signifies a crossroads for both fighters. This fight will determine if Coleman is on the fast track to retirement or on the comeback trail, and if Shogun can compete at the heavyweight level with legitimate fighters. Coleman has slimmed down a bit in training for the fight, but he's still walking into a buzzsaw with Rua hitting his prime. If he can manage Coleman's takedowns, I'm predicting a massacre. Rua wears him down and goes for some kind of flying kick to KO him and send a message to the HW division..

The rest, are truly so-so. Rampage and Rizzo both have something to prove after losses over the summer, and if their former selves show up, they should win with ease. Hunt will destroy (put one of the top heavies against a boxer with NO experience??). Thats the biggest no-brainer on the card.

But yeah, basically this is a setup event for the GP, and they probably wanted to avoid blowing their wad on a smaller card. Guys like Shogun, Barnett, and Rizzo definitely needed the warmup though. Don't know if I'm gonna buy the PPV or not..

By Thomas Gerbasi

The wait has been long, but the 155-pound weight class is finally coming back to the UFC on March 4th, and the two matchups that herald the return of the division are anything but lightweight.

Yves Edwards, last seen in the UFC knocking out Josh ‘The Punk’ Thomson in the first round at UFC 49 in August of 2004, will represent the United States when he battles Canada’s Mark Hominick. Hominick brings a 9-4 record into his UFC debut, and he has never had a fight go the distance, so you know he and the inventor of ‘Thug-Jitsu’ will be looking to finish this bout in explosive fashion.

Another Canadian standout, Ontario’s Sam Stout, will also be making his UFC debut on March 4th when he faces Massachusetts’ Kenny Florian in a three rounder. Stout, who has won eight in a row since a 0-1-1 start to his MMA career, is fresh off back-to-back wins over Donald Ouimet in the TKO organization. Florian, who was introduced to fight fans at a member of the cast of the first season of The Ultimate Fighter series, has won two in a row, beating Alex Karalexis, and most recently, Kit Cope.
It's finally official guys. There's some added interest since we don't know yet who will reign this UFC division (most of the other UFC and Pride champs are *too* dominant). I do wonder as to why Yves came back so I hope it's because UFC made it worth his while i.e. give them a belt to fight for.

Woot!

Mark's too small for lightweight though. He's like 154 pounds soaking wet :(

I won't count him out, 'cause he's awesome, but still.....

Stout/Florian should be good. Sam will put up a much better showing than Kit Cope did, but the ground still definitely isn't where he'll want to be against KenFlo.

Hunt vs Nishijima - woah. <3 <3 <3 Mark Hunt. Win or lose he's just about always a supremely entertaining fighter, in the K-1 days and in Pride. Nishijima held up well, but I think it's pretty tough for someone who can't land huge head kicks and/or le banner style punches to rattle hunt's brain. Still, he was quick and crisp and it has to be the best display by far that I've seen from a pure boxer as a first-time MMAer.

Hunt with his cardio in the first round was pretty damn incredible to watch, near effortlessly countering nishijima's punches when they were hanging at medium distance. When he started getting tired in the second and third his accuracy dropped down and half the time he just let nishijima punch him (hey, he's mark hunt), but Hunt's periodic explosions really took their toll on nishijima. Awesome fight.

But yeah, overall how this card played out surprised me, but some serious injuries from khari and shogun might've accounted for some of that. Dong-Sik was very impressive considering his past performances in MMA, though I don't think he really has any punching power to speak of, heh (but still, very nice slam defense and sub attempts). Sperry vs tk and roman vs rizzo were quick and exciting. Cool event.

I'm shocked Overeem completely dominated Sergie. I knew Overeem would bring the goods, as he no longer has to cut wieght giving him the cardio he needs. But he tore Sergie apart. Sergie dislocated his shoulder the first minute into the fight. Didn't tap, and paid for it badly. Respect though. Dong Sik, he may have lost his fight on paper, but he fucking won that battle. I couldn't believe it. The entire room's attitude before the fight, "This guy is going to last a minute." But after the fight, everyone had respect for him. Congrats to Sik. As for Hunt, I loved him a couple months ago, but I think I'm getting bored. He fought a guy he was supposed to win against, and did just that. I just don't see him winning against any top level grapplers. I have a feeling if he face Nog, or even Yoshida again, he would lose.

The upsets made this event quite entertaining. First time I was really impressed with Overeem. And Nishijima hands really looked good especially his left jab, just a really bad matchup for him. Hunt always amazes me for how well he moves for such a big guy. Sure his ground game can improve or if he develops some take-down defense, it won't matter.

Kinda random but did Barnett put a pro wrestling single leg pin on Nakamura? I guess you can when you totally dominate your opponent.

A fan cam of the Stout vs Fisher fight is on YouTube. He's shooting from far away so the fighters are tiny but the pace these two fighters put up make it watchable. Stout is in the white shorts.

Postive article in BusinessWeek about the UFC.
Time Off

With boxing lacking star power these days, another contender has stepped into the ring. The Ultimate Fighting Championship, a mix of boxing, wrestling, and martial arts, has become a hot ticket in Las Vegas. League stars Tito Ortiz and Forrest Griffen will go glove-to-glove in a rare out-of-Vegas slugfest on April 15 in Anameim, California. But fans will have to get their kicks on pay per view since the event is sold out. Tickets for Vegas matches, which run throughout the year, can be purchased at ufc.com.

Yes!

This is the news I like to hear. It will take time, but UFC WILL get mainstream.
