Mir vs Pe de Pano
Babalu vs MVA
Sakara vs Sinosic

Official for UFC 57 Lidell Couture 3 ufc.tv

I figured Mir would get someone he could sub easy but this could be a great grappling match. And if Pe de Pano wins, he sets himself up for the title. Say that Mir has ring rust and give him some cans next. Babalu/MVA is another match to set up a title contender, except in LHW of course. I think casual fans will be reminded of MVA due to his fight with Couture, so beating MVA would let these fans know why Babalu deserve the next title shot. And if MVA wins, he proves to the hardcore fans that he deserves a title shot himself. The fact that this fight is on the same event as Lidell/Couture is more assurance to me that they're looking at winner vs winner of these matches for the next LHW title bout. I also think UFC brought back Sinosic because they think fans will remember his match against Forrest. Bascially, they're trying to build Sakara here.

edit: Vera-Eilers just added to 57, funny this card is filling up faster than UFN 3.

Interview with Rampage

As a result, he feels his future with Pride is uncertain, at best.

“I think that whole situation may affect whether or not I’ll stay in Pride,” he admitted. “I’ve been thinking about how they just gave me an offer for a new contract. Now, I can’t lie to you and say that it was very low, but it wasn’t as good as it should have been.”

Though he wouldn’t get into the specific dollar figures, he said the offered amount opened the door for US-based promotions to enter the frey.

“Let’s just say this: From the way things look now, I would be able to do better with sponsors fighting in America,” Jackson asserted. “With fighting being on network TV and everything, I’d be able to get a lot of sponsors. At the end of the day I have a family and a new house to provide for. I have to take care of myself. In Pride, I’d probably get paid less to fight tougher opponents, and I’d get paid more to fight easier opponents in America. You do the math.”

RAMPAGE IN UFC
DO IT NOW

Rampage is so marketable in America its ridiculous. AND he worked Chuck! COME ON DANA

rampage.jpg

Is it just me or did Rampage say that he could make more fighting for KotC w/ sponsors than he would make with Pride's new contract?

Anyway, if Chuck makes it through Randy, he'd have to be a huge favorite in rematches against Babalu and Tito which leaves no one left for Chuck. Dana needs to get Rampage as soon as possible and get him known by the US fans. That is, if Dana isn't afraid of damaging Chuck's star potential. I originally wanted Ramage in the UFC so he could stay away from Chute Boxer's for awhile, but not if the UFC isn't gonna market him.

I went over to train at Team Tompkins today and talked to Sam Stout (TKO lightweight champion). He confirmed that it looks like he'll be fighting Kenny Florian in the UFC in March.

This just goes to show that the UFC needs to bring back the lightweight division. They're already using a bunch of lightweight fighters (Stevenson, Florian, Stout), so why not bring back the division rather than force them to fight at 170?

And the UFC should definitely do whatever they can to pick up Rampage. He wants to fight for them. He's one of the most marketable fighters out there. Chuck wants to fight him to avenge his loss. And with the UFC LHW division starting to get thin, he'd be a great addition. Build him up over the course of a year or so, so that it's not devastating to the UFC's investment in Chuck if Rampage wins.

St Pierre was on PKW and when asked if he was fighting Hughes in March he said 'Sorry but no, I will be fighting BJ Penn instead'. BJ was on earlier and also hinted that St Pierre was next for him.

St Pierre vs Penn
That will be some fight

Putting GSP against Penn next is a big mistake in my opinion. If GSP loses, you sidetrack his quest for the title. If Penn loses, you screw up his rematch with Hughes. Instead, Hughes should face Penn in order to determine the undisputed WW champion. Then, you put GSP up against someone he can beat (essentially anyone at this point) and then wait for him to win and cut a promo similar to the one he cut after the Sherk win. Since he's mentioned going after the title specifically, it doesn't matter who he faces whether it's Hughes or Penn. Going the route they're going makes no sense to me. Oh, well, the fights will be good regardless.

Indeed. Great fight, but does kill their future matchups.

I can see why they're not throwing up Hughes/Penn right away. The UFC probably feels they need to build Penn up a bit for the new fans who don't know who he is. If Penn won the title, they'd have a champion who's a much lesser draw.

But even then, I'd say throw Penn against a lesser fighter and have Hughes fight GSP again, and Penn gets the winner. Or something.

I guess it might not be that big a deal. We'll be getting great fights out of the situation regardless.

Oh, absolutely. Still, doing Penn/GSP first is a no win situation for the UFC. The only way they're really going to escape this unfazed is through some sort of double tapout/knockout tomfoolery a la Newton/Hughes 1.

I really want to see GSP hold the title but for the UFC, there's a problem with Hughes/GSP 2 if GSP beats Hughes then loses to Penn right after. Granted the loser of Penn/GSP will have to wait for their title shot but there's little chance of the belt switching more than once this way. Also, since Penn only wants two fights at WW assuming he wins, best to guarantee they're against GSP and Hughes.

Anyone have pics/info on the fight between K1 figher (?) & former boxing contender Ray Mercer. I believe the boxer lost, due to inability of defending low kicks. Just trying to remind few ppl about importance of lowerbody strength when everyone thinks upper is sufficient enough.

Well, I didn't see that one but I was able to see Mercer's match with Remy Bonjasky. In it, Remy caught him with a glancing blow from a high kick about 22 seconds into the fight. Mercer then proceeded to stand there perplexed for a second before turning around and exiting the ring, effectively forfeiting the match. Shortly thereafter, he returned to boxing.

Full UFC 57 card in, odds missing Sakara/Sinosic match though
mmaweekly, ufc.tv
Many of the sportsbooks in Las Vegas have just released lines for UFC 57 which is held at Mandalay Bay. Here are the early numbers...

Randy Couture +150
Chuck Liddell -180

- The UFC Champion is only a slight favorite in this fight. Chuck is at -180, while Couture is +150. That means if you wanted to bet the underdog Couture you would bet $100 dollars to win $150. If you like the champ, Liddell, you would bet $180 to win $100.

Marcio Cruz +210
Frank Mir -270

- Frank Mir opened as the favorite at -270. How will Mir repond in his first fight back in the UFC?

Mike Van Arsdale +170
Renanto "Babalu" Sobral -200

- Babalu opened up at -200 as the favorite. Van Arsdale is a live underdog as slight money has already come on him in the early stages.

Justin Eilers +120
Barndon Vera -150

- Vera comes in as the favorite as this fight takes place at 205. It will be very interesting to see if either fighter has problems making 205 as both have fought traditionally at heavyweight.

Gilbert Aldano +120
Paul Buentello -150

- Buentello is just a slight favorite in this fight which may surprise some. Aldano is known as a KO artist, so this should be an interesting fight between two guys who can knockout opponents.

Brandon Lee Hinkle +150
Jeff Monson -180

- Monson is the the more expierenced fighter and is the slight favorite in this fight as a result.

Whitehead +140
Jardine -170

- Jardine is a slight favorite in a fight between two members of season 2 of the Ultimate Fighter.

SPIKE JANUARY 16th

- Tim Sylvia vs Ausserio Silva

- Stephan Bonnar vs James Irvin

- Chris Leben vs Jorge Rivera (i think this is confirmed)

- Jonathon Goulet vs Jeremy Jackson

- Drew Fickett vs Josh Burkman

- Melvin Gulliard vs Anthony Torres

- Spencer Fisher vs Aaron Riley

My mistake, that may be it- the details were pretty vague to me but I believe that was his sole match in K1. I recall former boxer Both (forget first name) who thought he would wipe clean the K1 events because he packed "a cannon rivaling Mike Tysons"- yet he struggled (1-5 record) because he was unprepared about the low kicks. K1, which use boxing gloves, is not too friendly to boxers it may seem.

Mercer fought twice in K-1. The aforementioned bizarre abandonment after a single Bonjasky high kick, and he also lost a decision to Musashi.

Francois Botha is 2-7 in K-1 now, I think, but both of his wins were from fluke injuries to his opponents (Le Banner's bum arm, and Aerts injured his leg).

What was his reasoning from 'walking out' after a high roundhouse kick? Surely those boxers get equal beatings to the head but a single kick? Was his intentions to fight in K1 serious or was this kinda like a 'one-off' special event made for the crowds. Really surprising how relatively easy boxers give-in.

Current rumours to wrap up the Pride NYE card:

Pawel Nastula vs. Alexander Emelianenko

Fabricio Werdum vs. Antonio Rodrigo Nogueira

Poor Nastula :(

And Werdum/Nog could be very interesting.

Bas quits Pride!

Bas Rutten quits The Pride Fighting Championships

I quit Pride! I know, quite a shocker he?
Why would people say, it’s a dream job! You are absolutely right, it IS a dream job, and the Company is great, they have unbelievable fighters and unbelievable shows!

Of course this is not without a good reason, and just to make sure that there are NO misunderstandings, I am going to tell you a little bit of what happened. (Pay attention to the “little bit part”) If I don’t do this, people start speculating and rumors will get started and this way you hear it straight from me and not some gossip that people are going to make up.

First of all, I deal with people here in the States that work for Pride, so it’s NOT the fault of the people that work for Pride in Japan. The people in Japan are great people and the President Mr. Sakikabara is a very nice person and he and his staff has always been very good to me.

I came to the States to try to become an actor so I asked them if I could only do the Pride shows for next year, no more Bushido shows, because I already had said “NO” to three movies, all leads, and the reason for that was that I had to go to Japan all the time.

So I asked to do only the Pride shows and because the company grew so much, PLUS I really think that I did a good job and a lot of good work for Pride, I thought it was time for me, after 6 years of working for them, to ask for a raise. Well, here we go, the “very short version” out of respect that I have for the Company. The negotiations started, going back and forward, saying this, saying that, you know, the usual negotiations drills, and it resulted in me finding out that Frank Trigg is co-hosting the next “Pride FSN show”.

Wow!! Now NOT telling me that this was going to happen after everything that I did for them in the last 6 years?? That was something just unbelievable and that was right away the motivation behind my decision to quit. (Of course this is not the only reason, that’s why I said the “little bit”) If they would have at least called or emailed me to inform me that Frank was going to do it, I would have been OK with that, because there are many reasons that they can come up with for that. But doing this behind my back, I mean, don’t these same people here call me “The face of Pride?” No thank you! This is just NOT the way you tread people and trust me, surely not me!

That’s it! It’s also not a thing that I can turn back because once I know that people don’t respect me for what I do for them, it’s irreversible. That’s just my character and I can’t change that, I couldn’t look at myself in the mirror anymore if I did stay with them and still have to work with the people here in the US who don’t respect me.

I feel VERY bad about all this and I am sure that I am going to miss this job tremendously, the fighters, their trainers and friends, the staff in Japan, the friends that I made over there and of course the wonderful reactions from you guys that I always received!!

Understand that I won’t go into details (this is for the people who want to interview me, this is it, I won’t say anything more). First of all because I am not that kind of person and second, because I had a great and outstanding 6 years with Pride and like I said before, Mr. Sakikabara and the Japanese staff always have been treating me with respect and have been very good to me.

I wish Frank Trigg all the best of luck and I hope that he will do a great job! Together with the one and only Mauro Ranallo, who’s the best play-by-play guy in the business I truly believe, it should be no problem!

No worry though, because I am pretty sure that “El Guapo” is not out of the picture and will “pop up” somewhere else, because this is in my blood and you simply can’t get that out just like that!

The one thing that’s good about it, this will be the first time in 6 years that I am home with New Years Eve with my family and I love that!

Happy Holidays everybody, and I really hope that you understand my decision.

Best wishes,

Bas Rutten

Yves Edwards back in the UFC. http://bloodyknux.com/forum/showthread.php?t=11342

The UFC not having a LW division didn't really bother me as most of the best came to Pride. But now that it looks like the LW are back in the UFC, I hope they stack it. Both Sherk and Penn have expressed interest in going LW. Then there's Joe Stevenson and the TUF guys all already signed by the UFC. Add unsigned guys like Josh Thompson and up and comers like Sam Stout into the mix and it looks like the LW can support divisions in Pride, UFC and K1. Also great about the LW coming back is the 12 live Spike shows to support the division. Just waiting for confirmation now.

They better not be making him fight at 170. The UFC is already using tons of LWs right now. Bring back the damn division, Dana!

Nice find Yamaha.

Looks pretty hot this year

Genki Sudo VS Morifumi "Kid" Yamamoto (HOT!!!!)

Akebono VS Bobby (Joke!!!!)

Jerome Le Banner VS Alan Karaev (Le Banner is going to kill this fool, but the Russia is huge)

Semmy Schilt VS Ernesto Hoost (Shuld be a good fight with Hoost being am old man with a soft face)

Musashi VS Bob Sapp (Musahi has the home town crowd..even more so in Osaka! Messed up because I am friends with Musashi's trainer.. he used to train Bob before.. go Bob..)

There is more.. but these are the biggest draws

Umm, sorry, Blackace, but K-1's card doesn't "look pretty hot this year". It looks like shit.

It has two good fights. Kid vs. Genki and Schilt vs. Hoost. Your man Bob vs. Musashi could be an exciting fight.

But it will still beat Pride in the ratings, won't it? :(

well for K-1 having two legit fights is hot..

Oh damn.. Pride and K-1 odds are up at mmaweekly, guess which event had bigger favorites.
L O L @ Fedor -1400

I think that may be the biggest favourite I've ever seen for a single MMA match. Justified, of course.

edit: And they're not even putting up odds for some of the K-1 fights. No Bonjasky/Predator, Akebono/Ologun, Nagata/Morkevicious, Masato/Ohigashi.

well for K-1 having two legit fights is hot..

Okay, you've got a point there :lol

Pride on tv now, k1 starting soon -

minowa vs sakuraba starting now - is it live? i have nooooo idea!

I watched a horrid whiskey fueled Crocop vs Silva fight - was that tonight or was that some sort of replay?

ooookay Sakuraba just came out as
an orange Hard Gay
funny as fook!!!!!!

ah, crocop vs hunt starts soon... oh jaaaaa

crocop vs hunt result :
hunt wins on points - he took some big kicks from crocop, but in his usual style just sort of blinked as if to say "...and???" - he`s just a monster! crocop looked to say "thats enough" to the ref as well at one point. Anyways, thought Hunt deserved it

zulu vs Fedor :
bwahahahahahahaa - over in 26 seconds or so - Fedor just beasted all over him, got him on the floor , worked his head - he managed to get up, but he put him straight back down - ref left with no choice

Seriously, whats the point of putting an experienced kickboxer against an former wrestling entertainer? Remy probably did not even prepare for this bout......

A few comments on shockwave:

fedor/zulu: Fedor lived up to the -1300 favorite. Bend over, zulu, cuz fedor set off a nuke.

gomi/mach: They were saying that gomi weighed in at only 154, which really surprised me since he's one of the biggest lightweights normally. He came in a little small this time, but so fucking fast that he ended up throwing that insane flurry on the ground that mach just couldn't take. Frank Trigg didn't think the punches were effective, but when mach went back to his feet he could barely stand. Boom. Gomi is amazing. Fighter of the year indeed.

busta/hendo: Really close. I thought that busta won by a little bit, but I can understand the decision after hendo nearly finished the fight at the end. I want to see a third match.

saku/minowa: minowa, minowa, minowa. What the *fuck* were you thinking getting into a suplex position against sakuraba? You put me in a ring with saku and I'll get raped every which way, but one thing I *won't* do is assume that position, because he's going straight into his patented arm-destroying kimura (see: renzo gracie) . Study fight videos next time.

mirko/hunt: Totally lived up to my expectations. Jesus, hunt took a full on LHK and sweat *exploded* off his head, but he DIDN'T GIVE A SHIT! Hunt's a monster. Mirko kinda pussed out and refused to engage, moreso than normal...well, for good reason...and clinched defensively a lot. He did what he needed to do to stay alive, and got a lot of nice surgical shots in, but Mark's a steamrolling monster with beautifully destructive punches. Oh man, Mark's spinning back kick (unfortunately didn't land) and Mirko's lightning axe kicks (which landed, IIRC)...what a fight. Rematch please.

yoshi/ogawa: wish yoshida would fight a little more often. He's a real talent.

arona/wandy: well, more exciting this time. Not so sure about the decision, but of course arona didn't get to capitalize with his takedowns...as usual. Please, someone at BTT tell him to TRY TO SUBMIT PEOPLE.

Excellent event overall.

I missed Fedor's 26 second destruction of Zulu because we had trouble getting the PPV working :(

I heard he actually said "Sorry Zulu" in English into the microphone afterwards :lol

Gomi is amazing. That fight was all energy; I knew it was going to last long.

Agreed on Busta/Hendo being a close fight. Would have definitely given it to Busta before Hendo's big flurry at the end, but with it, tough to call.

Yoshida looked good. Definitely need to see him fight more.

Mirko/Hunt. Mirko was frustrating here. But I guess he was frustrated too, when your best shots don't even phase the man. Should have tried to beat him on the ground, pride be damned. The axe kicks were sweet though.

I agree with the Silva decision. Silva spent a lot of time on top as well, having reversed several of Arona's takedowns.

And out of principle, I don't think anyone should be given a decision who, while lying on his back with his opponent standing, waves his opponent to come down and engage him in his guard. It don't work that way, Arona. You want him down, you got to get him there.

Finally got around to watching the missing Shockwave fights and there wasn't much to miss. They showed all the good stuff on the ppv. Alex vs Nastula being the only exception with some good grappling exchanges.

And to correct my previous error, UFC 57 will have 9 fights with Whitehead vs Jardine and apparently, just a month afterwards, UFC 58 will be USA vs Canada. Now I'm split cuz I want Franklin and GSP to win.

UFC 58: GO CANADA!!!!!

2 Team Tompkins fighters are confirmed to be fighting.
Sam Stout vs. Ken Florian
Rob Macdonald vs. Seth Petruzelli

other rumoured fights:

Looks like a great card. Can't wait!

http://www.ufc.tv/

Apparently theres a HUGE ufc annoucement on Monday.

Throughout UFC history, there have been many groundbreaking announcements, moments that have both stunned and thrilled fight fans. But there's never been anything like this.On Monday, January 16th, during the Spike TV broadcast of Ultimate Fight Night 3, the UFC will raise the bar once again by announcing the biggest news in the organization's history, something that will stun the world of mixed martial arts.Don't miss this landmark moment in MMA history on Monday night. The Spike TV broadcast begins at 10pm ET/PT.

I was thinkin Rampage... but this sounds bigger than that.

Well if it really is the "BIGGEST NEWS EVAR" and it's aired during ultimate fight night, then it's probably an expansion of the partnership between spike and the UFC. Perhaps they've secured a deal to change formats from PPV to cable for real events?

Or maybe they're paying Mirko to fight ten heavyweights in one night for a special card? ;b
