Well damn, that event exceeded expectations.

Koschek needs to develop some more offensive skills. He was working to pass often, but he really needs to develop aggressive striking and better sub skills. He had a good opportunity for an armbar at one point, but he never even tried for it. I'm sure the skills will come, but will they come quick enough?

Leben impressed pulling out that sub. I think he was helped in that Dewees completely underestimated Leben's sub skills.

And boy, how about Loiseau? dem's got it right. Is there anybody more exciting in the UFC than the boys from Montreal?

A couple of things. First, Loiseau doesn't seem to have a good ground game, at first glance. He doesn't have a very tight guard, he doesn't seem to be dangerous with submission attempts from the bottom.

However, he did a great job of neutralizing Tanner's offensive from the bottom, and in his last two fights, he has demonstrated that he has no fear of the rear-naked choke and will gladly give up his back rather than take damage from mount or side control.

Now, some people on other forums are complaining that it's "cheap" to win by cuts. To that I say, Loiseau's elbows aren't weak elbows that only do cosmetic damage. His elbows do damage. After Tanner took those flurries of elbows, he slowed down and was noticeably affected. Loiseau uses his elbows effectively and decisively.

Pride 30 full card from mmaweekly

FIGHTCARD:
Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic (Croatia) vs. Josh Barnett (USA)
Kazushi Sakuraba (Japan) vs. Ken Shamrock (USA)
Sergei Kharitonov (Russia) vs. Fabricio Werdum (Brazil/Spain)
Quinton “Rampage” Jackson (USA) vs. Hirotaka Yokoi (Japan)
Murilo “Ninja” Rua (Brazil) vs. Murad Chunkaev (Chechen Republic)
James Thompson (UK) vs. Alexandru Lungu (Romania)
Henry “Sentoryu” Miller (USA) vs. Zulu (Brazil)
Makoto Takimoto (Japan) vs. Yoon Dong Sik (Korea)

:/ Little better than ufc 55 on paper given the potential of Crocop/Barnett and Sergei/Werdum. We're all just spoiled from the GP's though. And my god Lungu is huge.

863-FullyLoadedThompson.jpg

Yeah, Final Conflict + Bushido 9 really spoil this card.

Mirko “Cro Cop” Filipovic (Croatia) vs. Josh Barnett (USA)
Sergei Kharitonov (Russia) vs. Fabricio Werdum (Brazil/Spain)

Should be great fights.

Kazushi Sakuraba (Japan) vs. Ken Shamrock (USA)

Might be interesting, but who knows.

And the rest, eh well heh.

I thought Ninja was comin over the the UFC... =\

From http://www.sherdog.com/news/interviews.asp?n_id=3317&my_page=7 ...

Gross: UFC president Dana White always complains that he sends fighters to PRIDE, PRIDE never sends fighters to the UFC.

Kanda: That’s not true. We always offer fighters but they refuse. Sometimes the reason is that the fight purse is not a fight purse that they can afford. Sometimes our fighters are too strong against their fighters [who are] available, so they cannot find an opponent. We have been pushing some of the fighters to them but they never say yes.

Gross: Have there been recent talks about a PRIDE fighter going to UFC?

Sakakibara: We really want to send PRIDE fighters in the UFC. Sometimes the timing is not matched for when they want a particular fighter and when we can send that fighter to them. But most of the time they are not so willing to use our fighters. For instance we offered Sergei Kharitonov (Pictures), Mirko “Cro Cop,” “Ninja” in the last couple months.

Gross: There is a lot of talk about Ninja right now. Is that a possibility?

Sakakibara: Ninja is ready. He has been waiting since June. Dana White, please call me.

Apparently, the UFC is hesitant to let any of their fighters get beat by a Pride fighter.

5/8ths of that Pride card is why people need to temper their criticisms of the UFC for events like UFC 55, because Pride does the same thing from time to time.

Apparently, the UFC is hesitant to let any of their fighters get beat by a Pride fighter

I wouldn't say that. The proof is in the pudding, and the UFC is the one which has sent its fighters to Pride.

Obviously, money is a factor, but I wouldn't just take Pride's word for it. Especially since we don't know exactly what Pride fighters make.

I'd say the UFC is probably just cheap. They want a top Pride fighter but don't want to pay them Pride salaries when it's not gonna increase their ppv buys in the states. I think we can safely assume that Ninja would get paid more than Sonnen to fight Babalu. I would also comfortably favor Babalu over Ninja but if Ninja did win, well, Babalu already has a lost to Chuck anyway.

So here I am watching the ADCC Absolute Men's 2005 tournament, and in the second round Diego Sanchez gets his ass handed to him by the awesome Marcelo Garcia. Upon losing, Diego stands up and raises his hands in the air as if he were as special as a quadruple amputee that had just rolled to the top of Mount Everest. When Marcelo goes up to him to shake his hand, Diego totally ignores him and continues to celebrate his loss, arms raised triumphantly, arrogant grin on his face, and a giant question mark on Marcelo's.

...WTF?

Speaking of which, thoughts on Pride having grappling only and striking only (w/ takedowns?) matches?

I like those types of matches but more as a casual fan of them compared to mma. I'll be a little disappointed if it takes the place of some mma matches on a Pride card so I hope they get their own show. Granted Nog would be exciting in grappling only but I can see Arona putting me to sleep. And I like watching boxing and k-1 but I'm never in a hurry to watch them.

Welterweight Karo Parisyan puts his chances of fighting UFC champion Matt Hughes (Pictures) at 70 percent, he told Sherdog.com sunday evening, after the 170-pound UFC No. 1 contender pulled a quadriceps muscle while grappling in his Huntington Beach training camp.

fuck =(

i just read that too. >:( with gsp, sherk and diaz already in matches. and bj very unlikely. i think only charuto could save this matchup if karo is out. last i heard, he won his last fight via elbows, heh.

That would really throw a wrench into things.

They could always move up Hughes/GSP II and maybe throw Riggs in against Sherk, if he doesn't mind fighting back-to-back events. But I'd like to see Charuto thrown back into the mix as well.

Better then UFC fighters that's for sure. They pay UFC fighters in shares of Cheetos stock.

LOL Saku KOed Kenny. :lol

Worst pride event in recent history.

Fabricio vs Sergei

WTF? Sergei must've just had a spetsnaz mission the night before the fight, because he looked seriously sleep deprived and nothing like his normal self. Slow, unresponsive, not forming punch combinations. Fabricio was constantly standing still in a corner and was often landing a consistent jab while sergei couldn't get much off. I mean, fabricio HAS HIS BACK AGAINST THE CORNER and kharitonov is missing stuff like low kicks. WTF? Werdum shoots for the takedown around 20 times, but never secures a position, and all but twice kharitonov ends up on top. Boring as hell and sorta bizarro world because werdum seemed to land more punches standing than sergei did. wow. what the hell happened here.

Mirko vs Josh

KNEES TO THE GROIN! THOUSANDS OF KNEES TO THE GROIN! WHAT THE FUCK! Josh seriously kneed Mirko in the groin around 50 times I think. After the first 30 or so, Mirko slowed down, visibly in pain, and started guarding against the groin strikes until the ref finally started talking to josh about it.

Anyway, this was the most bizarre fight I've ever seen, with mirko taking josh down several times and punching occasionally from the mount. Josh CONSTANTLY tied up in the clinch and landed minor shots (besides the constant barrage on mirko's nuts), and seemed a little too fat for Mirko to throw around easily. I dunno, josh landed several times more legal strikes than mirko did, and not taking into account the groin strikes, josh won the first two rounds. Mirko finally got himself back together again in the third and laid down some hurting on josh's face. In between the go-nowhere clinches that josh went for. What the hell kind of trainwreck fight...

Saku vs Ken

:lol

Erm yeah. Ken looked visibly scared shitless of sakuraba here, for whatever reason. When saku would perform a minor feint, Ken would pretty much leap 20 feet backwards and sprawl. When saku tried to strike, ken backpeddled with no attempt at counterstriking, until saku finally landed a huge left to Ken's chin. Ken's legs wobble, he goes backwards, turns around and flops against the ropes. As saku starts to punch him from there, he goes totally limp and begins to fall through the ropes when the ref stops the fight. Ken then leaps back to his feet and cries about the stoppage. HEY RETARD DON'T TRY TO ESCAPE THE RING SLASH GO LIMP SLASH TOTALLY TURN YOUR BACK TO YOUR OPPONENT if you want to continue. Still a premature stop, but only barely, since ken's a goddamn retard. Oh, and after what happened in the arona fight, it was so great to see Saku more happy than I've ever seen him. Jumping for joy, screaming out, totally ecstatic. Rudimar picking him up and carrying him around. All the chute box stars gathered in saku's corner congratulating him. Really a sight to see.

Strange days.

Sherdog mod from japan, quoted:

I just read the postfight comments on sportsnavi, and Kharitonov said that his arm was injured early in the fight, and that was a problem for him. He also mentioned that he had the flu or something similar a couple of weeks before the fight, and although he was recovered for the fight, he had been debating whether he would fight nor not. And that the flu-related lack of training led to his arm getting hurt in the fight

http://www.sherdog.com/images/pictures/19952.jpg

Yeah, completely forgot to make a thread about the event, but I guess I'm glad not to have wasted my time.

Still haven't even downloaded the fights, just because everyone's description of them hasn't exactly had me itching to see them.

Personally, I think Riggs has a much greater chance of beating Hughes than Karo did. His has solid standup and his striking from the guard is some of the best of any fighter in the US. His submission defense is shit but then again Hughes isn't exactly Royce Gracie. If Hughes stands with Riggs he's in trouble and if Riggs ever ends up on top, Hughes is in major trouble.

I think Hughes will probably end up submitting him but it's a much tougher fight for him stylewise than the original matchup.

Much greater? Ouch. Though I do lean the same way, just not to that extreme. If Riggs gets top position, I can see Hughes giving his back since he's not afraid of a submission from Riggs. I guess Riggs, with his power, does have a better chance of a KO than Karo had of subbing Hughes. But I was hoping Karo would prove us all wrong.

As much as I like Karo, I think his fight with Hughes would've too closely resembled both Karo/Sherk fights. Karo doesn't do well against strong wrestlers.

No Karo makes me sad...
cry.gif

Riggs should be alright... but Im certain he'll get his ass handed to him.

Karo's out? Bummer.

Riggs is in. I guess I'm a psychic, though I had the matchups mixed up ;)

Riggs is dangerous, but I'm not sure how much of a threat he really does pose to Matt. Less than Karo, I think, actually.

Riggs looked good against Lytle, but not "Capable of beating Matt Hughes" good. I think Riggs gets taken down and grinded out, with Matt subbing him or TKOing him in the later rounds.

"Matt is only a one dimensional fighter"

riggs already talking trash, :lol

I would have thought that the written lashing Lindland gave Riggs when they were scheduled to fight would have taught Riggs that he doesn't quite have the gift for talking smack.

No doubt that Riggs attitude sucks. He's the first one to talk shit before a fight and the first to make excuses after a loss.

Regardless, I think he has a decent shot in this fight. Provided he can survive the early onslaught and somehow put Hughes on his back once, I think he has a solid chance at stopping the fight from a cut. Did you guys see those elbows he dropped on Lytle? Lytle's lucky the top of his head wasn't cut clean off. Plus, Riggs is one of the few people in the UFC at 170 who may be able to outmuscle Hughes.

That was a brutal elbow from his back on Lytle. Riggs said he stepped into that fight at 190 too. Damn, to gain 20lbs in 24 hrs. Hughes might have problems holding this boy down.

UFC 56 confirmed bouts

Hughes vs Riggs
Franklin vs Quarry
GSP vs Sherk
Horn vs Prangley
Hoger vs Newton
Thomson vs Wisniewski
Gonzaga vs Jordan

Wonder what's taking them so long to add the 8th fight. The event was sacrificed a bit to bring Sylvia/Silva and Bonnar/Irvin to the free card in January but the main card is still good.

edit: 8th match Thiago Alves and Ansar Chalangov

1) What the hell is Sam Hogar doing on a UFC PPV card? Get him outta here....

2) You got my hopes up for a second because I thought this meant the return of Carlos Newton...but alas.....

and in Canadian MMA news, TKO 23 was held last weekend, and Team Tompkins fighters Sam Stout and Chris Horodecki from London, Ontario won their respective bouts.

Sam Stout won by KO in a rematch against Donald Ouimet and retains his TKO Lightweight Championship

TKO-23-627.jpg

TKO-23-638.jpg

Chris Horodecki is but 18 years old, and made his professional debut in September, and has improved his record to 2-0 in TKO, both wins being KO/TKO stoppages.

Ha, he'll probably be the swing bout too.

Just realized the UFC keeps on adding new WW's. What a crazy division.

Nice Kick.

Lodge this one under "What. The. Fuck?"

Sherdog is reporting that Tito Ortiz is going to make his return to fighting for the WFA, and his first fight is going to be against Matt Lindland.

I guess Tito wants to go back to his former policy of gaining success by fighting underweight fighters. :lol

But seriously, I could actually see Lindland beating Tito just like Couture did, since he has a good chance of outwrestling Tito.

More when Sherdog's servers stop getting pounded and I can provide a link.

edit: Forum thread: http://www.sherdog.net/forums/showthread.php?t=305270
News piece: http://www.sherdog.com/news/news.asp?n_id=3625

....aaaand Tito has denied the story.

Looks like Tito's still just playing his attention-whoring game, trying to keep his name on the radar lest the fight world passes him by.

The WFA returning is the best news ever in the world. With the UFC throwing away talent to make room for Sam Hoger and the like, the WFA is definitely going to become the "hardcore" MMA fan's salvation. Tito and Lindland wont be fighting each other, but both are on the card. So let's see here:

Tito vs. TBA
Belfort vs. Eastman
Lindland vs. TBA
Shaolin vs. (The name escapes me, a Team Quest LW fighter though)
Trigg and Salaverry are also heavily rumored to be fighting.

This freaking rocks.

Well, if the following comes true, I've got your what the fuck beat Boogie.

Celebrity MMA

Joe Rogan vs Wesley Snipes

"It's 100% true..." Rogan told Trigg via the telephone. "I want the fight and now it's up to Wesley Snipes to accept." Snipes is a black belt in tae kwon doe and has trained in martial arts for years studying Karate, Kung Fu and Capoeira.

Rogan was a four-time state Tae kwon do champion before pursuing a career in show business. Rogan earned a black belt at 15 after just two years of training. At 19 he won the US Open Tae Kwon Do Championship, and later as a lightweight champion went on to beat both the middle and heavyweight title-holders to obtain the Grand Championship.Rogan also trains regularly with submission specialist Eddie Bravo.
Ha ha. Now this can be good on a UFN to bring in people who've never seen mma. Just keep it off a ppv.

Oh shit

Rumours have Tito back in the UFC :lol

Tito and Shamrock as the new TUF coaches?? Oh man.. that would be fekking AWESOME. :D
Guess we'll find out tonight

Someone going to make a UFC 56 thread?

I'm on it....

Bumping an old topic:

Well, I just had my first tournament today. Been doing BJJ for 6 months ~ 5-7 times a month.

The TBJJF Carlson Gracie Open was the tournament, I don't think they've uploaded any pics or anything. I competed Gi and No Gi and took 2nd in both. I could have gotten 1st in the Gi, I choked on that.

Gi: My first match ever was a domination, I don't think he scored any points, I believe I had anywhere from 12 to 18 points to his 0 before he submitted from exhaustion from my side mount. The guy I lost to had been wrestling for 12 years, was a blue belt who is close to getting a purple, competed in Renegades (NHB fighting) and had a 20 min rest to my 5. But excuses, excuses, I had it and lost it. I got the takedown, so I was leading in points, but I let him get back up into standing and I shouldn't have. I should have just flopped onto him if I had to. Everyone keeps saying I did awesome for first tournament and due to the competition, but I don't believe so. I was submitted with an Americana.

Then I threw up during the "this guy won" announcement at the end of the match. Yeah, that was embarrassing.

No Gi: 10-15 mins later it was time for no gi. The first guy I faced was a fun match. After that 2-intense-rounds-in-5-minutes debacle before, this match was cake. I mounted the guy and stayed there pretty much the whole time. His coach kept screaming about how tired I was and that's why I was on him not changing position. I wanted to laugh so bad, but I felt that would be rude to the other competitor. I also wanted to hold a conversation with him to show him "how tired I was." I submitted the guy with an Americana from the side mount.

I lost the finals to another blue belt with wrestling experience. I was submitted with a rear naked.

The school finished 2nd even though only 6 of us competed (5 3rds, 2 2nds, and 1 1st). All of us were white belts except one guy who was a purple.

Next Tournament: The Machado in Feb. in Dallas.

Misc: Met Carlson Gracie, talked with him for a quick second and asked him to sign a Gracie Open shirt. Very nice guy. When I asked him to sign it he was like: "of course!" And thanked me afterwards. I was like: "WTF? You signed my shirt! I should thank YOU!" He remarked on my size and strength and I blushed....if black people can do that. I shook his hand several times prior to all of this in regards to the awards.

Yeah, I hope so. Thanks guys. I went to the dojo and specifically practiced escapes from the back and side. In addition to just not being aggressive enough, I think those were my weakest points.

http://www.prideofficial.com/

And the new matches are:

Silva vs Arona
Cro Cop vs Hunt
Fedor vs Zulu

Hmm.. I think my favorite match will be Cro Cop/Hunt or Gomi/Mach. Sleeper would be Kondo/Nakamura. Ogawa/Yoshida could be the other sleeper but Ogawa's probably just going to promote his Hustle. And I just hope Fedor doesn't break his hand on Zulu.

Silva vs. Arona: Sweet. Hopefully Wandy can come out with guns blazing this time.

Mirko vs. Hunt: Okay, cool. I admit, I was kinda hoping for Mirko/Nogueira, because I want to see Mirko avenge that loss. Anyway, I'm calling Mirko by sub, you heard it here first ;)

fedor vs. Zulu: Good grief. I was hearing Nogueira/Zulu late last week, either way, dumb matchup, but Fedor deserves a gimme more than Nog does at the moment. Get that thumb healed, Fedor.

Boogie said:

I think it's a matter of honor between these two guys; why would mirko want to spoil it by grabbing takedowns and trying to score some points? No, I think Mirko wants to prove his worth and keep everyone confident that he's the #1 challenger, and that's not going to be done through halfhearted grappling, especially after his last match. I may be overestimating Mirko's intentions here, and he may go for a win by any means (of course it's not dishonorable to go to the ground in MMA, heh, not at all), but if I were Mirko I'd try to top his K-1 performance against Mark with a brutal KO finisher this time around. If it's even realistically possible...mark hunt has never been KOed...

But it'd be sweet. Hell, the other way around would be pretty sweet too. I just want 'em to have an exciting match.

That's kinda funny you say that as I figured Cro Cop/Hunt would be too much like K-1. But at the same time, I'd rather not see Mirko grapple if he can help it. And Hunt's got some sub defense as he showed when he last fought... last New Year's Eve against Silva.
