awesome. loved the gameplay trailer. heh also cool to see the Philly Phanatic. Can't wait for tommorow. Still can really notice the clones in the stands though, oh well. I guess it will be like that until PS4.

IGN Demo Impressions
http://ps3.ign.com/articles/951/951162p1.html

The demo itself takes 1.5 gigabytes of space – that might seem like a lot, but there's a ton of cutscenes and dialogue to be found in this demo. After a credit screen and title splash screen, the demo immediately launches into an exhibition rematch of last year's World Series between the Philadelphia Phillies and the Tampa Bay Rays. Matt Vasgersian introduces the game with a television styled presentation that focuses on something interesting happening within Citizens Bank Park, the location of the game, like a group of players in the field warming up or players listening to the national anthem. From there, you immediately launch into the game, complete with lineup introductions by the team of Vasgersian and Rex Hudler, who provide commentary throughout the demo. Incidentally, you do have the option to change the game's difficulty level from the baseline Veteran difficulty to any one of the five included difficulty levels, which includes the new Legend level, shortly after this intro.

However, the most amusing parts are the umpires, who seem to be a bit more creative. So far, I've seen umps take bats from players and pretend to jack homers out of the park as well as reel in large fish using the bat as a rod.
:lol

This game can't come out fast enough.

One more month...

Jacking a homer isn't new.. fishing is tho

Hope franchise is a bit deeper. Because I play that the most

This and KZ2 within a week of release? :(

I wonder if I can bring my RTTS player and continue it in 09.

I took the batting title home last season with a .347 yet I struggle to retain a .280 this season past the half way point. I'm in my 9th season too. :/

i read through the original post but didn't see...

is there any announcement about online leagues/dynasty? i loved MLB 08 (probably the most realistic sports game ever), but it ended up sitting on the shelf because the online "leagues" were a fucking joke.

i don't play single player sports games, and i dont have time to waste on half-assed onlilne leagues.

it will be a damn shame is another year of MLB is wasted because the developers can't be bothered to give us something that most other major sports games have..... online leagues with full player and stat tracking.

after what EA did with NCAA Football (online dynasty mode that mirrors single player dynasty feature for feature) the bar is raised for ALL others sports developers (including madden!). i hope the MLB guys don't let us down again, but if the past has taught us anything it's that silence about the subject is not good :(

I think the people that went to the community event can't talk about the online stuff until they release info on the playstation blog. But from what I have heard its supposed to be better. /shrug.

I'm not much of a online sports person so its not really a selling point for me though. There was a interview about it with one of the devs a while back on OS though.

edit: here ya go

i know a lot of people dont give a shit about online leagues, but its really the only thing i care about. playing against the CPU is boring in sports games. yeah franchise mode is cool, road to the show/etc is cool, but to really experience a sports game you have to play other human players.

not that the game will be bad if it doesn't have online franchise/leagues, but it will be a worthless game to people like myself

If they do this for The Show I will be in gamer heaven.

thanks for the link windu, but true to form operation sports doesn't ask the right questions. "will online leagues have to wait for the real MLB season to start in order to begin?" who gives a fuck? how about you ask them if they've expanded the online leagues to support team and stat tracking like the "other" MLB game does?

never change op sports, never change!

I think that's a fair viewpoint, even though I don't share it. And honestly, I would be dubious if I were you, until the developers showed me they can get this section of the game right. I guess we'll have to wait and see.

THIS. I hope sports devs really start focusing on polishing online to where an online league is just as rich, option-filled, and detailed as an offline league. Seriously it doesn't even come close. I haven't seriously touched vs. CPU play in a sports game for about five years. Very liberating even though most devs still give online play the shaft.

I would like to think that they have tweaked online to make it playable, but I'm not holding my breath. Baseball is one of the few sports games where even the slightest hint of lag can cause a huge amount of frustration. You start playing the guessing game when it comes to batting, swinging at anything that comes your way. The input lag is just too great to make a game interesting.

No matter how much the devs say they worked on the framerate, they can't anticipate connection speeds of the average person. I would still like to see it get to a point where the difference between playing offline and online is minimal, because they have some great ideas with leagues and dynasties that would seem cool to get into. It's just the online games themselves are just not stable enough to make it worthwhile to play.

This is still day 1 for me, but online is not going to be the first thing I go through.

Well the nailed it in NCAA. There is no difference between online and off line dynasty. But Football is a little easier to pull off since games are only once a week.

i take your point hasenfeffer but fighting games, music games, etc. have all been shown to work online. i'm sure i'll enjoy it regardless based on the impressions

Is stat tracking really that much of a deal breaker for you? Honestly I'd be happy with a basic, functioning league with quality netcode at this point. W/L and smooth gameplay. I guess TS's shitty online track record has lowered my standards, heh.

Like Hassenfeffer said, lag is the biggest issue. In a baseball sim minimizing it is absolutely paramount. In fact TS's own quality sorta works against it with the pitcher/batter model being so spot on. Latency just turns the game on its head. When you have to buffer your swing that much earlier on 93+ fastballs, off-speed becomes complete murder.

Thing is, when you find somebody with a good connection its surprisingly close to offline, but the netcode the last few iterations didn't seem to have much leeway beyond that. Even average distances posed problems. I really hope they've focused on polishing this up.

A simple ping reading/rating of who you're playing would certainly help (ya know, like PC games have been doing for a thousand years). At least you'd know what you're getting into.

For example NCAA has full online dynasty. Recruiting and all that, which is more than stat-tracking. Trades and off season stuff is so awesome MP

Oh yeah, that shit sounds boss (wish I was an NCAA fan, sounds like they do a great job with that series).

I'm just saying it would mean squat if Bronson Arroyo is torching me with fastballs thanks to a laggy connection. Priorities people. :D

I enjoyed the vids from IGN and then I realized it was vids from the demo which is off a much earlier build than what those guys at the community event got to play. :O

This game can not come out fast enough. :D

So, I just finished my fourth year in RRTS in MLB 08. Starting pitcher. Struggled this year with a 11-7 record as my team never gave me run support and for some reason, it was just an off year. The team turned it on after the All Star break and we got into a run going into the playoffs and only lost one game on the way to winning the World Series.

I think that's a fitting end note to retire MLB 08 and get pumped for MLB 09. :D

shpankey

not an idiot
Having a smooth online game of baseball can't be THAT hard. High Heat 2000 did it. There was NO lag whatsoever in that game online. If anything, baseball should be easier than other sports games since the only time lag even matter is when batting. They should just figure out how HH done it. There's really no excuse for lag and poor netcode in a baseball game.

Not that it matters to me though, I'll be playing single player mostly.
