So to add to the Dodgers outfield mess that is Puig/Kemp/Crawford/Ethier/Van Slyke/Pederson:

Oh, and let’s not forget one other potential complication, too: 28-year-old Alex Guerrero, who definitely isn’t a shortstop and possibly isn’t an infielder at all. Guerrero put up a big offensive year in the minors (148 wRC+ in Triple-A) around being assaulted by Miguel Olivo, but his contract includes two fun clauses: one that says he can’t be sent to the minors after his first year, and another that says he can declare free agency at the end of any year in which he’s traded. The bat looks like it could be for real, he began playing outfield late in the year in Triple-A, and each of his three September appearances in the bigs came in left. The fun never ends!

One of them will be moved this offseason. Either Crawford or Ethier and I'm not expecting much in return.
If LA can move Crawford and only have to absorb, say, 50% of what's left on his salary, that's a huge win. Doesn't even matter who they get in return.

Get a couple of really good drafts in a row and you can turn around a farm system in half that time. That first part is the tricky part though.

You can see why that time frame is so scary for teams in the Yankees' position, though. "Give it 5 to 10 years" is just a horrifying prospect when you're a team with the expectations of the Yankees.

BravesGaf, what do you think of Gardner for Justin Upton? RAB posted the idea and I find it interesting.

Luhnow said Castro is the No. 1 catcher and will remain that way. Conger the backup. He said Corporan still in the mix. Could carry three.

Why would The Braves do that?
Justin Upton and Heyward are going to be free agents after next season and both are going to command $100mm+ contracts. Braves won't be able to retain both. So the braves would get four years of Gardner at $13mm per, which is a very good contract for a 3win player.

Yankees need to get younger and need power, they might have to put in more than just Gardner, but I'd do it.

The Braves wouldn't do it as they want prospects. But I'm also not sure why the Yankees would do it. 2015 is a lost cause, isn't it?

Edit: Well, the Braves might do it if the Yankees took BJ too.

The alternative is to keep gunning for older veterans and trying to extend a competitive window a la the Phillies. Hard to maintain a perennial contender with an aging core and few impact prospects on the horizon.

You don't have to do an Astros' style rebuild with 100 loss seasons. The Cards had some frustrating seasons between 2006 and 2011 but they were still winning more than losing except for 2007. And once the minor league system is at least respectable, a team can reload its major league roster without sacrificing competitiveness (see 2012-2014 Cardinals).

Not according to ownership and Cashman.

Mets, Yankees, and Dodgers have contacted White Sox about Alexei Ramirez.

The White Sox have received solid early trade interest in shortstop Alexei Ramirez, according to a report from Bruce Levine of CBSChicago.com. Chicago has been contacted by the Mets, Yankees, and Dodgers regarding the 33-year-old.

Ramirez has one year left on his deal at an affordable $10MM. He also comes with a $10MM option for 2016, which carries a $1MM buyout. Though he could not maintain his hot start to the year, Ramirez ended with a solid .273/.305/.408 slash to go with 15 home runs and 21 steals. A well-regarded defender, Ramirez compiled 4.1 rWAR and 3.3 fWAR.

Were the White Sox to part with Ramirez, the team would look for a one-year stopgap. The long-term solution, the team hopes, is working its way up through the system in the person of Tim Anderson. The 2013 first-rounder reached the Double-A level last year.

http://blog.sfgate.com/giants/2014/...-where-the-other-sf-giants-free-agents-stand/

Pablo Sandoval is seeking at least a six-year free-agent contract, with the length of the deal more important to the third baseman than the dollars, his agent just told me.

Gustavo Vasquez, speaking after he met with Sandoval in Florida, said he has spoken to a “few teams” about the third baseman since free agency began in earnest Tuesday. That includes the Giants.

However, Vasquez said the Giants have not made offer and instead have discussed options for the length of a deal.

“Pablo is 28,” Vasquez said. “He is still young. Maybe if he was 30 or 31 we could talk about four or five years. But he’s 28. He deserves more than that.”

Sandoval has no specific dollar figure in mind, but Vasquez said the Panda is willing to work with a team on the average annual value of a contract if he gets the years he wants.

Six years could be a tough sell for a player who has battled conditioning issues his entire career. But Vasquez reiterated that Sandoval is more mature and will not allow himself to get so overweight again that he cannot perform. Sandoval plans to begin workouts in a week.

Also, Vasquez said, “The teams we are talking to have not asked about Pablo’s weight.”

Vasquez has meetings set up with several teams at next week’s general managers meetings in Phoenix, and hopes to speak with the Giants’ brass, too.

Furthermore, Sandoval does not feel the need to drag out negotiations. If he sees an offer he likes, the agent said, “He’ll sign fast.”
