This is a crazy analysis of why Russell Martin should absolutely, definitely, not be catching R. A. Dickey next season: http://capitaljays.com/2015/11/04/the-knuckleball-effect-on-russell-martin/
And I'm a believer. Thole it is.
The gist is this:
And I'm a believer. Thole it is.
The gist is this:
In his 21 games catching Dickey, Martin totalled 85 plate appearances, and hit an abysmal .179/.224/.333, for a .557 OPS and .241 wOBA.
Russell played on the day after catching a Dickey start 15 times, and in those 63 plate appearances his batting line improved to a far more respectable .241/.339/.444, with a .783 OPS and .341 wOBA
Russell Martins remaining 93 games (and 360 plate appearances) came two or more days after he caught R.A. Dickey, and are the most damning indication of Gibbys current catching arrangement. Two-plus days removed from catching the knuckleball, Martin hit .256/.353/.492, for an .845 OPS and .364 wOBA.
To give you an idea of just how much punch catching the knuckleball took out of our All Star catcher, in his 120 games in a Blue Jays uniform, Josh Thole has hit .212/.283/.258 for a .250 wOBA. On days Russell Martin caught R.A. Dickey, he basically transformed into Josh Thole, and unlike Thole who simply gets removed from the lineup the following day, the physical toll of the knuckleball effect appeared to hinder Martin the following day, too.
