All Star Game ratings up compared to last year.

Twitter did wonders for the All-Star Game ... and TVratings were up Categories: Baseball , Games , National League , Phillies , Sports Total People in Discussion: 0 Posted at 02:17:49 PM on July 11, 2012

And you thought a blowout in the All-Star Game would mean less interest.

Think again.

The All-Star Game on FOX generated an increase in overnight TV ratings and won the night in prime time despite an 8-0 blowout by the National League.

Social media also increased the buzz thanks to players such as Yankees shortstop Derek Jeter, Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp, Blue Jays outfielder Jose Bautista, and Nationals pitcher Stephen Strasburg, who, for the first time ever, interacted with fans via social media during the game once they were no longer playing.

The telecast drew an 8.1 metered market rating according to data from Nielsen, representing a +3 percent increase over the 7.9 from last year’s game in Phoenix. FOX won the night in prime time, beating its nearest competitor by 47 percent. St. Louis led all markets with a 20.5 rating, followed by host Kansas City which averaged an 18.7 and Detroit which delivered a 16.1.

Among the markets seeing the biggest increase in ratings over last year were Detroit (+50 percent), Washington (+36 percent), Los Angeles (+27 percent) and Dallas (+27 percent).

On social media, the All-Star Game generated 807,603 total public Twitter and Facebook comments, a 257% increase over last year’s game (226,461), based on data from Bluefin Labs. By the end of the first inning last night (the NL had scored five runs off of stud Justin Verlander) there were already more social media comments than the entire 2011 All-Star Game generated.

Among 27different All-Star related topics that trended worldwide on Twitter last night, the hashtag #ASG was used in 245,362 social media comments making it the most trended term for the telecast (30.4% of all comments).

For the first time ever, computer stations were set up in a room adjacent to each clubhouse allowing players -- once they were no longer competing in the game -- to quickly reach out to fans via social media while completing their other media obligations before returning to the bench. Throughout the game nearly a dozen players stopped by the room starting with Kemp (@TheRealMattKemp), who due to injury did not play in the game and therefore was able to visit the social media room in the first inning and become the first player ever to send a tweet during a live game.

In addition to Kemp, Bautista (@JoeyBats19), Mets pitcher R.A. Dickey (@RADickey43), Dodgers pitcher Clayton Kershaw (@ClaytonKersh22), Rays pitcher David Price (@DAVIDprice14) and Strasburg (@stras37) visited the social media room and tweetedyi from their personal accounts. Royals DH Billy Butler, Giants pitcher Matt Cain, Jeter, Rangers pitcher Joe Nathan and Giants third baseman Pablo Sandovalvisited the room and answered questions from fans via official MLB accounts.

Over a 24-hour period around the event (9:00 am ET Tuesday to 9:00 am ET Wednesday), Kemp picked up 6,930 new followers, Dickey gained 6,465 and Strasburg gained 4,939.

LHP Josh Edgin will join the Mets on Friday, the team announced.

Edgin went 3-2 with a 3.89 ERA in 35 games for Triple-A Buffalo this season.

Last weekend, Joel Sherman of the New York Post said the Mets would be calling Edgin up soon to “better gauge what they have internally before diving deeper into the relief trade market.”

Later today, Jason Bay and Frank Francisco may play a rehab with Single- A St. Lucie in Tampa, as they both work back from their respective injuries.

Lastly, R.A. Dickey is scheduled to be a guest on The Late Show with David Letterman tonight, which airs on CBS at 11:30 pm ET.

It's about a week old, and I just read it, but has the Baseball Prospectus Starlin Castro article been posted? Interesting read. Based on the early numbers of his career, he has a 44 percent chance of being a Hall of Fame type player. Doesn't mean that he will be, but his early numbers give him a better chance than most MLB players. Would be nice to have one corner stone for the future of the team.

Numbers alone do not get you into the Hall of Fame. You also have to be someone liked and remember the voting is done by writers, so you have to be in decent standings with them. Though, good numbers certainly help quite a bit.

"Putting on the best show for the fans" kind of misses the point. The people of KC were told on June 5th, by Cano, when picking the HRD squad "ya gotta pick one of the local guys" and that he would if he could.

Then, a couple of weeks later, Billy Butler got picked for the ASG. So of course the city got really excited, thinking he'd be in the HRD. Because Cano himself said he would be.

Then a couple of weeks after THAT, Cano announced his list. No Billy Butler. No explanation as to why. Which to us, seems like the typical attitude big market teams always have toward us, especially the Yankees: that ever-present knowledge that they don't give a flying shit about us, our team or our city, and it sure doesn't matter what we think.

Of COURSE everyone is going to be pissed. KC took it as a huge insult to be blown off like that. KC is a crazy loyal sports town. Of course Cano is on our shit list.

There doesn't need to be a "hometown hitter" rule added to the HRD for our benefit... we were pissed because Cano is a liar. If he'd never said anything, it never would've happened.

And anyone who thinks this would be a deterrent for a free agent to come here isn't thinking it through very well. KC acted out of loyalty. That crowd also gave a wildly enthusiastic cheer to Melky and Beltran because they were former Royals.

It was a passing comment he made to a stupid question, and it was weeks before he made his picks so he probably forgot anyway. KC fans are pathetic for getting all heartbroken Butler didn't get picked, he wasn't worthy, get over it. There's no rule that a hometown guy has to be picked, and Cano never promised anything. Just a bunch of self-entitled clueless "fans". All they did was succeed at making themselves look like a bunch piety fucking losers.

Yep. If you take away Derek Lowe and Livan Hernandez, the Braves payroll is about $82.7 million.

I love how the one year the Braves went over $100 million in 2008, they were terrible and lost 90 games (mostly due to a million injuries). The one year they were around $82 million in 2010, they went back to the playoffs.

I think someone needs to take baseball a little less seriously.

Also, newsflash: there are asshole sports fans in every city. Cano said KC fans were harassing his family at the park.

Does that mean two years ago when he was actually good he had like a 70% chance?
