Geez, the Cards bullpen blows. Why didn't they try to add anyone in the offseason?

Also, does Kruk annoy the shit out of anyone else? Why can't ESPN ever get decent color guys for these national games?

The problem is (as that link about the Sanchez injury stated) the Cards AAA bullpen is even worse. So we either trade some of the good prospects we have for bullpen help, go after Wilson or K-Rod who are unsigned (and if they can still throw), or start Wacha's major league clock.

Mets have a slightly used Frank Francisco and Aaron Laffey they'd be interested in trading for prospects.

It was an awful, awful offseason for the Cards. But I don't think most people saw the bullpen as something we needed to address outside of acquiring LOOGY help. The Motte injury, Boggs regressing a ton, and Rosenthal not being as good as he was last October (with a dash of some bad luck) has all contributed to this shitfest.

Trying to figure out how many loses so far this season can be directly attributed to the bullpen....
As pointed out on a Cards board I frequent, how does this happen every year? When was the last time we had a good bullpen at the beginning of the year? Seems like we're always scrambling not to shore up our bullpen midseason but to completely retool it.

On the bright side, Rosenthal's FIP and xFIP are both better than last year's but his ERA is a full run and a half higher. He should be fine. If Mujica can keep up his decent pitching, that's two innings covered. Our middle relief, OTOH...

But like you said, no one saw this coming. They thought they shored up the bullpen by getting a lefty specialist (and overpaying for him, too). Then again, they thought they shored up infield help by getting Wiggington but with Carpenter doing just fine at 2nd base and Adams letting Craig take days off or give days off in the outfield, he's the most disposable person in the entire franchise.

edit--have a feeling we're going to have to let Adams go in order to get any decent help in the pen

:(

Wait for Brian McCann to come off the DL, you'll be able to pick up someone from the Braves Bullpen then (either C-Mart or Varvaro) via a waiver claim.

The Phillies were finally able to break the curse of Chad Durbin last night. Hopefully this starts a run of winning games. They really could have taken 3/4 if Manuel hadnt fucked up that running on contact play in the first game.

Are you saying you don't like Hersheiser?

Kruk sucks but Orel more than makes up for him and actually I think they have kind of a pleasant banter. I really like that crew. If you get another cerebral guy in the booth it would get a bit dry.

It's time to admit your team is bad. Join us, brother.

Looks like Tim Beckham's plan to get in the majors this season is going to plan:

Tim Beckham made an off-balance flip with the runner, Travis Ishikawa, bearing down on Hak-Ju Lee, and when Lee bobbled the ball, Ishikawa slid right into him, with his foot hitting the lower part of his leg before his head collided with Lee's knee, leaving both players on the ground hurt and Lee especially in pain. Both players would exit the game, but the extent of their injuries were wildly different–Ishikawa broke his nose while Lee tore ligaments in his knee. The exact extent of Lee's injury is unknown, the injury is expected to sideline him for the remainder of 2013.

The Rockies are almost certainly going to fall off. They're using Jeff Francis and Jon Garland for crying out loud...

The A's have acquired Casper Wells from the Blue Jays in exchange for cash considerations.

People said that about Baltimore and their rotation last year, but it never happened.

So I go on a vacation and the Brewers somehow won 7 in a row and are back to barely above .500 and are 2 games back in the division?

Sigh, I shouldn't get my hopes up. I know the crew is just teasing me.

1 game back

But yeah, don't get your hopes up. They don't get to play shithouse teams like the Giants and Cubs ever day.

The Cards bullpen is fucking horrible.

Boggs back to his usual 2011 self.
His 2011 numbers aren't even bad. He was slightly above average (96 ERA-, 92 FIP-). This is 2008/2009 Boggs bad and that was when he was still spot starting. For w/e reason his walk rate has spiked tremendously (7.27 BB/9, wat?) and he's serving up more meatballs (26.7% LD rate) probably because he wants to avoid walking everybody. His K% is down so maybe his stuff just isn't fooling batters as much but I don't know how quickly K% stabilizes.

Top 5 offense. Man Carlos Gonzalez is a soliad player. And Tulo looks to be healthy. Prominent 3-4 right there.
Reminds me of the Fangraphs position rankings where they had Colorado at or near the top of the pack in WAR projections. Then they realized they forgot to account for park factors. Would be a hoot if they ended up lighting the majors up anyway.
