Mod scene: Backups, piracy, etc. next gen forecast?

Reggie to announce that the revolutionary aspect of the revolution is that it's pirated out of the box, so you don't have to spend extra money on modchips. :lol

Remember the classic: "Cartridges will cut down on piracy increasing sales theory"? A lot of die hards are the ones who mod their systems for additional functionality- and yes, piracy- maybe a small fraction who purely use only legitimate backups. Regardless it is an industry issue.

Easy net access and hard drives are steps in the pro-mod direction... organic and small/tight boxes in the opposite. Etc.

Any other salient issues?

There's somesort of rumor going around that the xbox 360 is "fireproof sealed" with no mechanism to open it.

Granted I suppose with the right frame of mind nothing is open proof.

Actually the coolest aspect of modded consoles is having emulators on them. A friend of mine has a modded Xbox with every single NES, SNES, Genesis game on it and tons of MAME games as well. Theoretically you could also do Gameboy, GBC and GBA as well. Though I guess all the extra power in the Xbox360 and PS3 won`t really help in this regard. Still, when you can get thousands and thousands of games at your disposal (including translated roms of games that were never released in the US) paying $50 for each new one starts to look less and less attractive.

I'll unfireproof it with a saw, and then buy a HK replacement case

What's the deal with regions as of now? I know a lot of mods are done specifically to play import games or DVDs.

Another obvious question... regarding external HDs... how likely is it that we'll be able to use unlicensed/"normal" HDs (vs 1st party or 3rd party hard drives)?
