Forced is the operative word. Mass Effect didn't force you to go one way or another and characters didn't give in to romance options if they weren't down for it. You could pretty much ignore romance options by choosing to not get to know other characters better. That's how it should always be. Players shouldn't have to care about the gender identity or sexual preferences of characters.You can only pick FemShep in the character creator and all of her facial presets are masculine. You can only romance female characters but that doesn't matter anyway because all male characters are now completely gay anyway.
In the first game, after rescuing Ashley Williams and discovering she hates aliens, you berate her for being a racist MAGA (make the alliance great again) xenophobe and blast her out the airlock.
… you know the more I type the more I realize that the entire Mass Effect trilogy was pretty "woke" for the time but they did it in such a way that it didn't feel forced or contrived. And that's the difference between a good game and a ham-fisted attempt at pandering to the modern audience.
