I'm not sure if can mention the company I used to work were they also had similar practises.

This company was a mobile phone retailer and I worked in one of their call centres. They would put a dog leash on you and make you walk around the office on your hands and knees if you did something wrong. I was once made to wear a sandwich board which read 'I'm a dickhead' because I failed to lock my machine when I went for a piss.

Degrading and outrageous

The gap between cartoon supervillains and actual villains gets smaller everyday.

That is insane. Why the need to protect them though, you don't work there anymore and after what they did to you, why protect them?

That can't be real. It has to be an individual manager and not a global policy --
Ive worked at Target and can personally vouch that this is indeed a common practice there. I worked at my local store for about a year and a half or so and probably witnessed at least 4-5 people who were handcuffed right in their department.
-- Oh.

Fucking unbelievable.

It seems that Canada didn't miss a thing.
Indeed.

lol what? assuming this isn't a joke (and I only say that as it sounds patently ridiculous), I'd personally slather the company's name all over the internet if they tried to make me do that shit.

That sounds incredibly degrading and likely illegal. I can't imagine there not being a law against something like that.

This is why you NEVER hire a dominatrix as a supervisor.

I don't buy this, as others have mentioned handcuffing an employee and walking them to the office is what this sounds like, not 'parading'. I'm sure it has an effect on other employees and they are ok with that aspect, but I highly doubt it's just some general 'shaming' ritual. I also doubt they would bother to do it if someone wasn't suspected of stealing (whether wrongly or not).

Don't know about Walmart as I've never worked there but I have also seen it happen there. A female employee was stocking shelves when a plainclothes security guard and a manager went to her and placed her in cuffs and walked her to a back door. As I was leaving a cop car was arriving to probably take her.

I would be pretty darn ashamed if I never did anything wrong.

I think it is wise for him to keep the company name out of this, not to protect the company but to protect himself. If he has no "evidence" of this happening and the company gets word the guy is talking about this stuff on the net then the company could make his life a misery in terms of litigation.

Absolutely shocking stuff in this topic though. It is hard to imagine this kind of thing goes on in modern society. I hope Target gets sued to hell and back.

It actually is done for shaming. Lap around the building then out of the front door.

Wow. The total lack of basic decency is galling.

Her attorney claims the experience was intensified by the fact Graham had Aspergers, a high functioning form of autism.

"The nature of Aspergers he tended to hyper focus and so he was very hyper focused on this," McNicholas said. "He was hyper focused on his loss and it was a perfect storm which resulted in his death."
I can relate to this...my daughter has Aspergers / high functioning autism. This kind of humiliation would destroy her. What a horrific thing to do to someone.

False imprisonment is a serious crime. Target and these managers are going to be sued to oblivion. Knowing how these things go, the managers are probably going to end up blaming target, say they were just following orders, and they will end up suing target as well.

that woman will never get to see her son again over the possibility this kid stole some bullshit worth maybe a couple hundred bucks (which didnt even happen). I hope she wins whatever lawsuit she files and it shames the managers into suicide their damn-selves. disgusting.

I thought this story was talking about how the "Walk of Shame" was something they do after all employees are fired and I was like, WTF.

Target may be seen as being nicer than walmart, but they still promote an employee culture that is very cult like. You never want to sit in on what their week long training sessions look like.

I've heard of this before. I'm pretty sure it happened at a retail store I was at, but I never saw it happen.

I don't think this is just a Target thing. It's also to try to make an example of the employee so others don't steal and feel the embarrassment. They do this with other criminals as well, taking them around a store in handcuffs to say "this is what happens if anyone is going to steal!" There are plenty of back entrances and areas, but they almost always walk right through the store.

This is so weird and wrong. I don't ever blame suicide on anything other than the person that took their life but regardless of that this stores practices are absolutely insane. He didn't steal anything and got dragged out the store in cuffs? What the Hell!

The walk of shame is a Target policy to purposely cause shame, embarrassment and emotional distress to any Target employee who is suspected of stealing from Target

You could ignore every other aspect of this story, and the above would still be grounds for a lawsuit. Even if the employee had been proven guilty, it would be inexcusable to actively attempt to cause emotional distress, but for somebody who is only suspected? Disgusting.

As it is, I hope the mother takes them for as much as possible.

They didn't press charges. They had nothing.

The Asperger's Card is in full effect here.

And rightfully so.

Please explain this comment to me. I'd like to know what an Aspergers Card is.

Anyway - like other folks with AS have said - this would probably do very nasty things to my mental state if this happened to me. You go through a routine which allows you to function without feeling like a massive idiot in society, then instead of everything going normally you get arrested and tramped around in front of the staff?

AS people need routines and stability. He'd have been unable to dwell on anything other than this for a long while, and dwelling on such a negative experience (when AS already leaves you prone to depression) is only going to lead in one direction.

Target is liable if they knew about his AS.

Are they though? I'm not sure there is special consideration given by the police when arresting people with disabilities.

Further you would have to prove that the manner that he was detained was actually the cause of his suicide and not the firing in general or other factors. Its impossible to say if he was discreetly let go if the outcome would not of been the same.

They didn't press charges. They had nothing.

Its really not worth it for the store to press charges over every shoplifting incident. If it was under $500 its just not worth it.

This needs to be a huge news story so Target takes a major hit to PR.

Workers' rights in this country are regressing.

If they knew he had Asperger's, then she has a case against them directly contributing to the state of his mind that led to his suicide.

An employer is supposed to protect their employees based on medical conditions or otherwise.

Autism is a neurological condition.

I would never, NEVER let someone do this to me. I don't care what job or how much the pay is. I would tell them to fuck right off and walk out.

Okay, I just read your post the opposite way then. I thought you were implying that the mother was pulling out "oh my kid had AS" as proof of Target's wrongdoing.

Move along, nothing to see here :p

I saw this happen when I worked at Target 7-ish years ago. In that particular case, the person was 100% "guilty" and was charged and arrested. She had been doing some crazy fraud shit with gift cards when guests would return items to the customer service desk. Somehow she managed to create a second gift card of the same value as what was being given to the customer as part of the return process, and would then pocket the 'bonus' gift card, without leaving any traces in the computer system.

She was finally caught, and got handcuffed at the CS desk, walked from the desk to the asset protection room which was on the right side of the front of the store, then walked back out into the main store area and over to the employee only/hr/break room area which was on the left side of the front of the store, then walked out of the store.

How do you conclude that there was no cause? The article only states that he wasn't charged.

You can't handcuff someone anyway. Store employees or guards do not have the jurisdiction to handcuff someone. They also can't interrogate someone in a room against that person's wishes.

I used to work for Target, we had several employees and many customers arrested for stealing. Never heard of any "walk of shame" policy. Usually they were asked to the security office, confronted, and the police came and cuffed them and hauled them away. You only saw them taken on the short walk from the office through the front doors, as there is no other way to the security office.

Of course, this is just my anecdotal experience from a good 10 years ago.

Hope she brings hellfire down on those assholes. Take em for all she can.

My bro worked at Target for a while. Didn't witness this kind of stuff, but if he did he probably would've quit three very second it occurred, but only after mouthing off to the manager about how big of a rotten cunt he was. Fuck Target like Wal-Mart.

Absolutely despicable. Whoever came up with this policy should be fired, as should those police who so openly allowed it to go on and participated in it.

I'm just not sure on the legality of it all but fuck it, it was carphone warehouse at their call centre in Warrington.

This was about 8 or 9 years ago and from what I understand that sales department who did all that type of shit has long gone

Not pressing charges is not the same thing as not suspecting him of shoplifting.

Well you could take it one step further and point out that by not pressing charges doesn't mean the guy is innocent. Pressing charges is a choice.

That said retailers hate shrinkage and will punish you as severely as they legally can. It's absurd to even think they had any probable cause. They had nothing but a rumor at best. They were lazy and didn't do what was required to isolate his actions as the culprit. If they did they would have proof and could and definitely would press charges.

Yup, nothing is worth that in a fucking target. Poor kid, and fuck those pieces of shit that do this.
