Monster Hunter 3 Tri Official Site Updated

I can certainly see where weapons like the heavy bowgun and great sword would be easier to use when you have some friends to take the heat off of monsters for you. It's all doable as-is, but it seems to me (so far at least) that mobility is at a premium when you're on your own, especially dealing with multiple monsters at once.

Another day, another Qurupeco attempt that times out just barely short of success. It's amazing to me how sure I could clear this with ease if the timer was set for 25 minutes instead of 20, but as it is I seem to always hit the buzzer while in the middle of kicking its ass, in its final nesting area, while it's limping. :lol

When you play with multiple people, do the monsters get more HP to balance it out? Otherwise, any hunt like those in the demo seems like it would be over with pretty quickly.

Multiplayer takes a lot of the heat off of the hunts because the Monster now has multiple targets to switch between, whereas before it will ONLY be coming at you full force. This is why the cat-buddy in Freedom Unite was so useful actually.

Yeah, in the full game eventually you get Cha-Cha to help you out.

Yes. Online monsters are quite a bit stronger than the offline counterparts.

It's true that heat is taken away in multiplayer, but you lose a lot of predictability. In MHFu I don't even take my cat with me.

Good things: you have more time to drink potions, use whetstones.
Bad things: can't predict next target, have to deal with scattering teammates.

Here's a little trick: the monster always faces you before doing it's next attack. So in solo, if you stand 90 degrees away from it's face, it will do 1 turn. If you stand even further, it will do 2 turns (max). Then it does it's attack and repeat. Most veterans use these moments to attack.

However, in multiplayer you can't predict where the monster is turning and how many turns it will do. Weapons like the hammer and great sword depend on the timing for the strongest attack (the third strike of the triple pound or the level 3 charge of the GS). You usually aim for the head with the strongest attack because it's the weak spot most of the time. If you hit, the monster will most likely stagger and give you time to escape. If you miss or it doesn't stagger, you'll be charged, be bitten, fireballed or whatever. For advanced play this is crucial.

In MHF1 where the armors weren't that strong (the best armor were still 2 hit kills), people had to learn to time everything perfectly and work in coordination.

In MHF2 and Unite, armors were much stronger than the end monsters (you can easily take 3-4 hits before dying), so a lot of people ended up being potion drinkers and just played roughly.

This is generally how a new player plays this game and grows (I too was like this).

1. Wait for monster to attack, dodge it and start hitting 'till getting hit by the monster (not purposely but usually you can't tell the next behavior yet at this time)
2. Circle around the monster a lot and attack when you see the chance with your best attack. Escape the current zone to use whetstones. (this works, but not very efficient, using a lot of time)
3. Always stand in a monster's safe spot (the spots where the monster will never hit with any attack) and attack from that area. Time a monster's attack to use whetstones during battle. Not sure if Tri has training mode, but you need to do this to survive G-rank training.
4. Time perfect hits (strongest attack on weakest spot) to cause stagger. Moments that are usually not attack chances are made as attack chances this way. Very efficient damage dealing (almost no pauses in attacking), but requires a lot of practice.

In multiplayer you can learn 1 and 2. 3 is already harder because you don't know exactly how it turns so you can't tell exactly how the safe spots are changing. 4 is impossible to learn in multiplayer due to multiple people attacking on different spots (making it impossible to guess the stagger limit). 1 & 2 might make you lazy as well if you think that's all there is to monster hunter, because the real goal is to never get hit (so the whole potion drinking isn't even a factor). People who record good runs for YouTube play as described in 4.

Are there Hermituars or Ceanatuars?

What about Gold Rathian?
Nope, they're out. The returning monsters are:

Minions
- Felynes and Melynx
- Aptonoth
- Kelbi
- Popo

Bosses
- Rathian
- Rathalos
- Diablos

There are no sub-species either (thank god).

Hmm well after a weekend of playing Freedom Unite. Ive had so many misconceptions about the series it appears and i though it would be helpful for the other newbloods to share my experiences. First off, this is an RPG, which i guess i always knew but didnt realize the DEPTH in which your armor/weapon choice impacts the game. There are so many nuances to this game im still learning them all the time. But its very apparent that they refined so many of the "problems" with this game in Tri. The second analogue stick makes a world of difference, at least for me. I cant get used to using the hook method for the D-pad, but ive come to a sort of zen state with adjusting the camera with L tapping/ adjusting the camera while im pinned down. In addition to that the small addition of adding icons above your head when you can loot something. Im always paranoid im leaving something behind when im fighting something. All in all, even with my small amount of time spent with the game im in love with the series/concepts of this game. And ive not even tried the multiplayer which most people tout as the reason to play this series. I anxiously await next month.

Also a quick question to the veterans. Ive found that i prefer using the hammer but i see that you cant cut off tails with it. Is this going to hamper my characters growth?

I didn't even play the demo much because using pre-baked characters and pre-baked inventory pisses me off. I NEED my VERY SPECIFIC backpack full of shit. I've got some disorder about things like this I guess, but I need my stuff. It annoys me in the training too in Unite. Wanna just pop up Lionel Hutz style with a knife and scream "dont touch my stufff"

Anyhow.

Some of you duders are going to feel kind of funny about your posts after a little time with the full game, those of you who nab the full game. I mean you'll always be learning new tidbits, but the actual controls and freakish difficulty of everything will melt away fairly quick, especially if you play with a friend and learn from each other and get involved with any kind of community.

Dont let people get you scared from all the talk about learning and ecology and dodging and evading all this and all that. You dont have to be some pro gamer. It is a challenging game, but it's not as punishing or tricky as it seems. Kinda like Demons Souls, I guess that's what makes me compare the two, it's the difficulty curve, it's kind of identical IMO.

I mean, hell, I won't even play fighting games due to the fact that I think it's too obnoxious to learn anything in them, but I'm pretty good at MH.

Probably not early on but later on in the game you absolutely will need to cut off the tail to get rare carves. That being said, the hammer is very effective at breaking other body parts, which is also necessary to get certain items.

I personally recommend that you start learning how to use one (or two) of the cutting weapons now so that later you can just switch between the different weapon types as necessary to each mission.

What the hell do you pack?
All I pack is
10 Mega Potions
10 Potions
5+ Well Done Steaks
Amour Talon
Power Talon
20 Whetstones
Plus one or two more items as dictated by the mission.

Depends on the mission and my weapon but a lot more than that usually. I am a pack rat.

*FINALLY!*

Bested the Qurupecco demo for the first time just a little while ago. That time limit makes it one hell of a skills test for newbies to the series. Definitely buying this as soon as I have the funds for it.

Just switch around the different weapons or ask someone else to cut for you during team play.

Beat the Jaggi after a few deaths. Bested the bird thing after a few attempts too. I wasn't a huge fan of the game at first but it grew on my when I beat the Qurupeco (sp?). I would love this if my friends were into it. I'm sure i'll still get it from playing the demo but might wait a bit.

Where are your other 2 charms? Kind of pointless to only bring talons. Either you bring all four, or just Power+Power or Armor+Armor.

No lifepowders? You must solo a lot?
No maxpowders? Good luck after 1 death...
Psychoserum? Worth the 1 inventory space.
Farcaster? Phone call, someone at the door or any interruptions: instant safe zone.
Power seeds + Armor seeds? Adds much more than any talon and charm would and it stacks!

If you're gonna pack, you might as well do it correctly :P

Also: I think charms are actually stronger than talons. Still, it's useless to discuss over that since they both stack with each other so there's really no point in not bringing it all.

No lifepowders? You must solo a lot? Yes, I'm predominately a solo hunter.
No maxpowders? Good luck after 1 death... 1 death = Rage Quit.
Psychoserum? Worth the 1 inventory space. Auto-tracker <3.
Farcaster? Phone call, someone at the door or any interruptions: instant safe zone. PSP sleep mode works well enough for interruptions and they are not something needed for every mission.
Power seeds + Armor seeds? Adds much more than any talon and charm would and it stacks! My cat has a demon flute and I'm too lazy to continually consume seeds in the middle of battle.

If you're gonna pack, you might as well do it correctly :P Items are teh cheat.

A little more in sight on the Talons, I don't really view them as a necessary, The only reason I leave them in is because they're non consumable so it's a "why not" thing.

Every time I use a consumable item I cringe, Which is why I pack light.

£69.99 is a rip-off for that, considering how cheaply you can get everything separately for. I've got the game on preorder at ShopTo for £22.95, and they also have Wii Speak there for £7.95. Classic Controller Pro is £15.99 at Amazon.
That's great. Maybe I can get a discount off a friend who works at GAME to even things out.

But excuse me, you guys are missing the point! This and Super SFIV are all I will need this year in terms of games (renting most other stuff), so I may as well splash out. Would have loved to have a similar Wii bundle to Japan, but just glad we get some kind of special dealy.

Goodness, it ain't all about the moneys! Monster Hunter is not a series I go cheapskate on; please tell me there are others who feel the same.

That's awesome. I love a game that has more substance than what can fit inside a 10 minute tutorial. (Still waiting on my eBay'd PSP to arrive, sigh...)

I bought a wireless keyboard, usb-hub and a 42 inch TV while anticipating Tri. You're definitely not alone :lol

I seriously hope I can find that bundle in The Netherlands though... if not I'll buy everything separate.

This just reminds me how bizarre I feel that there's no option to pause the game. It makes sense in online mode, since there's other players to deal with, but if you're going solo why not give the player the option, in case something comes up? Especially if missions regularly take 30~50 minutes to complete, that's quite a bit of time to dedicate without any sort of down-time.

I don't think I tried it, but doesn't the Home button work for that purpose?

There is a pause option in the menu when you play solo. (If you go into sleep mode the game also puts the game into the same pause, a message pops up saying so)

Still don't get this. I was able to pause the demo with the home button just fine.
I meant on the PSP, which is what I think was what he was talking about. Damn thread derails >.< .

No, actually I was talking about Tri (the demo, anyway). It is technically a Tri thread, after all. :P

I feel like a complete idiot now, though, because it never occurred to me to use the home button. I'm just so used to the game itself having a pause feature! :lol I'll slink away in shame now, feel free to resume the PSP discussion.

My mistake. Well yes, Home button will work (and there's also a pause button in the menu).

OH MY GOD CLICK ME UK GAFFERS.

I prayed for something like this. To God.

Damn, that's really expensive. I could probably easily find MH3 and the CCPro and WiiSpeak and probably get another game for that price. Though the website says something about an extra thing aswell... Kinda interested...

Maybe if there was some way for me to see if the game was actually worth extra for, like if there was a portion of the game with preset characters that gave me enough of a feel for the game on a disc. I guess such things are an impossible dream.

The extra is a plastic figurine. While it is quite cool, I probably wouldn't say it's worth the extra expense.

Oh, if it's the fossil one I found while searching I might actually go for it. And by go for it I mean hint heavily towards wanting it as a late birthday present.

playing demo, the whole game isnt just different enemies in these 11 zones right?
How many maps are there?

like entirely different 5 big and 5 small maps with different zones within them?

just clarifying. I have Freedom Unite for PSP but only played 2 hours or so of it, id rather just wait for Tri but checking on variety of scenery

Yes, totally different maps all together. Desert, Rainforest, Volcano, Snow etc

I was playing the demo again and I just love the music during the boss fights. It's really epic. I was on the fence to buy it, now I'm likely to purchase it thanks to the music.

I don't have tri, but judging from other mh games, I'm sure he means 5 full maps, with different zones within them. 5 small maps, some of which have only a few zones (arenas and such.)

Ok, so I just saw the trailer for MHP 3rd, and I noticed the Tigrex and Narga are in there.... My question is.... is there ANY possible chance we will see those fun / hard ass monsters in the western release of Tri???

Nope I don't think so, but there is one particular monster in Tri which is more ferocious than the 2.... Beriorosu > Narga too.

No, so far it looks like the only additions to the Western release of Tri is WiiSpeak support and a few new weapons. Don't expect any extra monsters until 3G (If we do get it).

Just be careful you don't get too sucked in. I enjoyed the demo enough that I (like others) have took the plunge and bought a PSP just for Monster Hunter Freedom Unite. Of course I'm still buying MH3 as well when it releases. My wife needs to take away my debit card... :D

Well in terms of bundles, there's the one that comes with Tri and the Classic Controller Pro. Preordering from Gamestop also gets you the promotional 500-points card. If you mean a bundle that comes with a Wii system though, I don't think there is one planned for North America.
