Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - Demo out [Updated: FAQ and Help]

I beat the water monster with the dual blades character. Pretty intense. Does anyone know if the final game allows you to use ZL and ZR instead of L and R on the gamepad? That would be much more comfortable, and I don't think those buttons actually do anything. Also, can you pause while playing offline? I thought you could in the older games, but I couldn't find anything.

I hoping for some control customization options as well. A shame you can't play around with customizing the Game Pad in the demo either.

Just tried a ranged weapon for the first time, it's like a completely different game! :o

I really enjoyed the bow, because it charges similar to the hammer and you're able to move around with it.

Im worried because I played the wii version using only the wiimote/nunchuck and loved it. I dont even think those controls are in this version.

I was always getting it day one regardless but it's nice that there is a demo to play until it comes out next month, especially as I have to wait until April 5th to get it.

Obviously the game is amazing and I'm just slightly gutted that the demo is limited to 30 plays as usual since one play only takes 20 minutes. The touchscreen directions work surprisingly well on 3DS, possibly well enough to forgo the circle pad pro monstrosity.

Just tried the bow, it plays fantastically. Gonna try the bowgun now. I wasn't a ranged weapon person on Tri. I'm hoping to change that with this game.

Really? Wiimote + Nunchuck was unplayable for me in Tri.

Anywho. Yup, this is definitely the Monster Hunter I know and love! Tried Lagombi with Lance and then DS first and amazingly I haven't lost my skills yet. I still think Lance is a little OP. Then I tried the Plesi with the bow and timed out. 20 minutes Capcom, really?

So good. Downloaded the 3ds version and beat Lagombi with the lance and then the great sword. Then, went off for my first ever encounter with Plesioth. Defeated it with less than 5 minutes left using the lance. Didn't hate the lack of a second analog stick but I am going to invest in the CPP for sure.

I'm not a MH3 fan and I can see how changing the controls would ruin the game. -_- It's part of it, man.

That said, just played the 3DS demo and... yeah I'm terrible again! Not that I was ever worth anything to begin with... :x

Why is Capcom obsessed with tank controls?
I hate being stuck in 5 second animations

Yeah, Monster Hunter is a game where each attack counts and you have to time everything down to each frame. I think it works wonderfully, but ymmv.

I have never heard of tank controls being used in that way.

Well, I've heard it being used incorrectly, sure, but nothing that egregious.

I might purchase this game for 3ds once i get one instead of wii u, don't want to pay $60.

Also from my perspective the second analog stick isn't even needed, the camera moves too slow, i would rather use auto camera fix.

The game reminds me of phantasy star but i like phantasy star a bit more.

I hate using L and R. I'm getting used to using them but I'd rather use ZL and ZR.

Well, after trying out the demo with a long sword, this will definitely be my first Monster Hunter game. Can't wait for release. Between Castlevania MoF, Lugi's Mansion, and this my 3DS will only be put down to eat and sleep.

SnS is the name of the game. I've been fooling around with the good old sword and board and it's just so simple but effective. Leaps with the sword are great way to advance few meters and do damage at the same time. Feels great!

The 3DS version runs perfectly. At times the frames seem to jump really high my gosh does it look good. I'll keep the 3ds on sleep mode all the way to release. That way there's no way I'll run out of tries.

lol Plesioth. Apparently I suck at swimming ...

Still managed to land quite a few hits, then the monster escaped to zone 11 and I somehow managed to swim my way to it only for it to return to zone 10 right after. Then after a minute or two of "fighting" underwater somehow it went on land which was much more manageable by focusing on its legs while dodging its attacks.

Sady, it went back to the water a bit later and I went back to clumsily trying to fight it in the water only to lose half of my health bar to some avoidable attacks and then... I got stunned and a swift death followed :(

first time ever playing a MH game. Was able to defeat the first easy mission with the sword and shield, got wrecked by the plesioth lol, tried the hammer. I had no clue what I was doing but seemed to be able to figure out the basics. I wonder if this would be better on the pro controller, all the buttons just seemed a bit stretched for a game where it seems like you need to use all of them. Hope some controller customization is an option as people mentioned. Not a bad first experience, and looks like it could be a real fun game, especially with multiplayer.

Also, how do you know if a monster if close to death? are there any indications that a monster will give, I didn't see a health bar anywhere. Doesnt detract from the fun just wondering.

You'll gain intuition for approximate monster health over time. When it gets close to dying it'll start limping and running away.

The Sleep status effect is something that procs after you deal enough sleep damage to it. You'll know it happens when the music suddenly stops. When it falls asleep, the next attack deals 3x damage to it. I recommend bombing its face; just remember not to hit the monster itself when you set off the bomb!

The camera moving in increments is fucking stupid and is an artifact of the original MH that will go away in MH4.

Thanks! Don't think I'll buy it but I'll at least try to beat Lagombi. Maybe the game will click :p

I guess I don't get how to play this. The first monster was hanging out in a portal zone so trying to attack it bounced me back between zones. I had to wait for it to come out of that area before continuing the battle. I also didn't really understand the combat mechanics. Seemed like my moves were pretty repetitive and just had to continue the same button presses over and over. Any suggestions for a newb?

The Bow is pretty awesome. I didn't know what the hell I'm doing at first but I got the hang of it. Doubt I'll be able to take down the Plesioth with it though, not enough time.

NOTE: Not sure if it's been mentioned, but if anyone needs help/a guide on how to use a weapon, use the manual that's accessible by pressing the home button. It describes all attacks and button combos for each weapon.

3DS version here. Amazed at how gorgeous it is next to the wii game. Used GS and SnS so far, saving the new to me weapons as a special treat for later.
Loving the controls. I was actually addicted to freestyle on the wii. With classic controller I found I had a ton of trouble pressing X and A simultaneously. Really sucked when using SnS, expecting to jump in but standing there doing an up slash instead. Haven't had a single errant input with this.

Hammer is a pretty cool weapon that relies on charging. So when you have the hammer out, hold down the run button and it'll charge up. If you release the run button at the first flash, you'll do a quick charge. If you release the run button at the second (final) flash, it'll send you into a spin. If you're standing still while releasing the full charge, you'll do a heavy smash (which will also send your teammates flying if they're nearby).

As for knowing when a monster is injured; You'll notice the monster will start limping / moving sluggishly when changing zones. Don't confuse that for being low on stamina, where monsters will also become more lethargic. This is really a handy thing to keep an eye on, since in the real game you'll receive missions to capture.. but not kill monsters. And monsters can only be captured while at low health.

How are controls for 3ds? Time to break out the claw?

Touch screen has a virtual dpad for camera and in conjunction with the lock on with L button, it works well. I don't see myself picking up a CPP XL and I'll be spending many hundreds of hours on the 3DS version.

There's a D-pad on the right side of the touchscreen, so no claw needed. Also, the "lock on" feature is amazing. Normally tapping the L button will center the camera behind the player. When you've locked on to a monster, tapping the L button points the camera towards said monster.

Hmm, transition to DA is coming along (used Wiimote in Tri). One advantage that the Wiimote had was that you could go into the SnS shield or Switch Axe sword mode more quickly than with DA (you didn't have to stop moving to do it).

Why doesn't the eShop work? Been trying to download the WiiU demo for like ten minutes now. Errors everywhere. :(

I had no problem with it, but if eShop is struggling with traffic for MonHan demo, just wait until they release the actual game.

I've tried Plesioth a few times now, but I just don't have enough time. I've never fought that thing before and I'm out of practice fighting under water.

The target button is a lifesaver under water.

Well, that Plesioth fight is crazy tough. First went at it with a bow. When that proved impossible went at it with double blades. That went better, but still kept getting knocked around as soon as I got close enough to hit him. If only underwater swimming wasn't so damn slow.

For those of you having issues with time on the Plesioth fight, there's a shortcut from camp that leads close to the water. If you look west at the camp, you'll see water. Jump in it and swim down into the tunnel.

I beat him my first time (and first time ever fighting him) with the Switch Axe, but I came right up against the clock to the last minute. He kept running away in the last few minutes. Went from 10 to 11, back to 10, and then kept running all the way to land. Thankfully on land, he was a goner.

My first time playing a MH game of any kind. I'm not sure what I think of it yet, other than it looks great on the 3DS.

Is the lock on automatic? I keep reading about a lock on and I'm thinking something like z targeting in Zelda, but here I have lock on turned on. (The monsters icon on the bottom screen has a scope over its image) but I still have to tap L to whip the camera around. Is that how it is?
