Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate - Demo out [Updated: FAQ and Help]

Downloaded the 3DS version and my first impression is that it's pretty awful. I familiarized myself with the basic controls and everything but from what I played there was just nothing satisfying about the combat or the gameplay in general.

Oh well!

Video (720p) - Hammer vs Lagombi:

http://youtu.be/ghgCqKh08qs

Can't believe it landed a hit on me -__-

all you guys struggling watch this video posted already, with a little patients and practice you can pawn this sucker in a few minutes and not even be close to the time limit.

once you take time to learn a weapon, you realise this guy is small fry, for vets who have never faced this monster, already knowing our weapon we can ace this guy first time, and the second time we can anihilate him because then we know his moves and patterns.

also bear in mind you'll be able to customise your skills to complement you style in the real game.

Hah, I have no idea how this game works. It looks really crisp on Wii U though.

But how do you kill monsters? I was beating on one for like 10 minutes (was just hammering x) and it wouldn't die. What am I doing wrong?

And why are there so many loading screens?

With the hammer thebest move is where you have you're hammer ready, then hold R. This charges an attack up and lets you run as well. Wait for an opportunity (but watch your stamina) and go for the head. This deals stun damage and makes them stagger. The hammer, i believe, i spupposed to set other players up for easy attacks once you've stunned them. Your most powerful attack is the last hit of the 3 hit X combo (golf swing), but it's difficult to get off and is best left for when they are already stunned or locked into a long animation.

Most monsters will take more than 10 minutes to kill by the way. They'll start limping and running away when they are close to death.

Edit: should note that with the charge up move, you have to stop moving before you let rip, else you get a slightly rubbish spin attack that takes about 7 weeks to snap out of.

What weapons did you try out?

Are you simply not a Monster Hunter fan?

Played the 3DS version. This is my first time ever touching a Monster Hunter game. I was disappointed by the controls but I think there is a game in there that I could really enjoy. Won't be able to try the Wii U version until tomorrow but I'm looking forward to giving it another shot.

First time playing a monster hunter game. Went in with the dual wield or whatever on easy and got wrecked.

What the hell is going on

It was developed with gameplay-first philosophies.

I couldn't find lock on for the 3DS version. Is there lock on?

There is a "Center camera on Target"
When you find the monster press the button in the botom right side of the touchscreen, now every time you press L the camera will face the monster.

this game is VERY hard to get used to and like if it's your first time playing it, right now I am trying my best to get the hang of it wish there was more then 30 tries, lol.

<--needs a camera lock

There are always growing pains when you first start. At least you will be ready for Monster Hunter IV when Capcom hastily brings to us Western players.

Wow, I really suck at this game. It would be nice if there was some sort of tutorial or something. Maybe even tell me what the buttons do before you drop me in the middle of the game? Doesn't seem like it is my cup of tea, but I can see where others could enjoy it.

just know the following moves.

1. use an item safely. in MH3, if you use an item you most certainly will be targetted.
2. from a sheath position to a weapon charge stance (hold L+X). essential for great sword and hammer users.
3. dodge roll. left, right, forward and backward roll especially in a unsheathed stance.
4. from an unsheathed stance, know when you can safely sheath your weapon while NEAR the monster and RUN! useful for dodging large area attacks.
5. the superman dive! while running, do a dodge. it makes you invisible for a few frames. funny to see other player doing this online.
6. don't spam attacks. it is ineffective and will get you killed. each weapon class has a certain uses. Great swords are charged to level 3 before attacking, it is slow but gives the greatest damage. Hammers, charge-pound on the head. Lances, well poke-poke-poke-side step... poke-poke-poke-side step... with the occasional poke-poke-poke-counter. Charging with lances is fun with lances, but do it online and everyone will hate you because its disruptive.
7. learn to focus on the monster using the right-thumb stick as they tend to go to your blind spot quite often.

Yeah I'm not sure how into this I am. I'm sure I'd like it more if I was familiar with the different weapons, and even without knowing all the nitty gritty I was having a little bit of fun. I'm just not sure I really wanna put all the time into learning the ins and outs of everything with my limited gaming time

I guess I'll probably end up picking up the Wii U version just because. Definitely steering clear of the 3DS one though

It only counts as a "play" every time you boot the demo, so you can start it and play as many times as you want w/o wasting "plays"

That's troubling. Might be a different experience on the Wii U though. I felt like I really needed it on the XL screen; especially with those controls.

L shoulder button by default switches camera behind the hunter. If you tap the monster icon on the touch screen while you're in the area with a monster, it will make the L shoulder button act as a lock on to the monster instead of just repositioning. It's incredibly helpful for the 3DS version without a CPP, especially in the water.

all this info would be great for an in game tutorial

Beat easy mode on my first try and was left feeling kinda meh about the whole experience. It's a pretty looking game, but there just doesn't seem like there's much to it to keep me interested.

I'll give it another shot on 3DS and see how this goes.

A proper lock on wouldn't work very well, as you can target various parts of the monsters body for different damage and also do things like destroy horns and cut off tails, which earns you different item drops.

Its much more fun when you become invested in your equipment and are actually hunting for certain parts to upgrade or build new equipment.

You may end up liking it or not but there is objectively speaking a LOT to it. In terms of mechanics of battle and in terms of the endless options and challenges to packing your hunter with what you want for the various fights.

we'll need to put this in the "main" thread or the OT or whatever

maybe change "country" to region, or just add a region column. and maybe make the link only visible when you quote the post.

Yeah, will do all that, was debating whether to put region or country

K, so I've beat Plesioth 3 times in a row with dual swords, switchaxe, and long sword. I think I am used to water combat.

Also, for those that this is the first game. The fighting monsters is only a part of the game, you guys didn't scratch the surface of gathering materials, obtaining armor sets and new weapons.

It reveals itself when you fight harder enemies and are forced to fully learn attack patterns and craft new weapons and armors. It get very, very hard later on.

gimmie da loot. gimmie da loot.

First time playing a monster hunter game and this demo really frustrated me. I picked using a bow, thinking I could play it safer. I fought with the controls the entire time. Why is it so hard to just use a fucking potion? I'm sure eventually I would get "used" to the controls but this demo really did no favors attracting newbs to this franchise.

Try one of the faster weapons that's not ranged. Sword and Dance, Dual Swords, Hammer, Long Sword, and even Switch Axe will be better for getting your feet wet.

Hmmm, I guess the demo gave me a bad impression then. I can see the appeal in the stuff you guys mention, but still not so sure it's for me. Probably doesn't help that I basically just ran circles around the enemies while hacking and slashing. That got boring really quick.

The prob with monster hunter is that you have to play it for like 15 hours before it makes any sense. Not many people would be willing to make that kind of investment, I don't think.

@LtOrange: yes

It's just Y isn't it? And hold L + Y or A to scroll through items. Though i admit, first couple of fights that feels awkward, it becomes second nature quickly. You need to make sure you're safe though. Sometimes, it's best to just leave the area to take it.

I'm just downloading this now, never played a Monster Hunter game before and if we like it, me and a few mates will be picking this up at launch to co-op through. I so want to like it! Please be good!

oh to all you newbs make sure the first thing you do is eat your rations assoon as the game loads to increase your stamina! i just watched a bunch of people not do this! trust me it will make life a tone easier
